Renuka | 212 comments Hey, so what books are you planning on reading this month? It's August which means BOOKS WITH DRAGONS! I myself am thinking of Uprooted by Naomi Novik, but I'm not sure if there's an actual dragon in it haha. I've heard it's fantastic and dark though! What do you guys think?

Sole (fluorita) I know what I'm NOT reading, and that's the Firelight saga. Already made the mistake once of reading the first book -Firelight- and was so dissapointed I never continued the series. I wouldn't recommend it for those who love YA books with great stories; this was full of silly cliches found in a lot of the latest supernatural YA stories :/

Meg (projectbookworm) I think Uprooted will be my pick, too! Of the ones I looks at, it seems the most likely to keep me hooked all the way through.

Tamara (tamarasan) Oh! Another one that I've heard of is Dealing with Dragons.

I love Dealing with Dragons!! It's one of my absolute favorite childhood series, and it's hystericallly funny. The main character is amazing.

Frogli | 75 comments I've just started The Copper Promise which seems fun. I'm also planning on reading Uprooted although as Renuka says, not sure if it actually has a dragon in it or not lol

Renuka | 212 comments Hey everyone, I've been away for a while, but I've been wondering how you guys have been enjoying the books you chose! I'm still reading Uprooted, but I'm disappointed that it doesn't have a real dragon yet!

I know some of you picked Eragon and Dealing with Dragons! How are you enjoying those?

message 9: by Frogli (new)

Frogli | 75 comments I read The Copper Promise, really enjoyed it, so much fun! Promptly bought the short story set before it and have now just started the sequel The Iron Ghost (although as far as I can tell this one doesn't have a dragon in it).

Helen (cooksbooks78) I finished Eragon a couple of days ago, I really enjoyed it and will be continuing the series. It was quite different to the film that was based on it, the story varied hugely in some parts. Can't wait to read Eldest

Melany (globalbymel) Just finished A Natural History of Dragons and it was very enjoyable! The main character is great and I like how the story was written as a memoir after she's gained her fame and fortune looking back to the beginning of it all. Also, the illustrations are lovely. I'm not sure I'll be continuing with the series but it would be interesting to hear about her future adventures that get hinted at in this book.

Now off to read His Majesty's Dragon!

message 12: by Sole (new)

Sole (fluorita) Well, already read Dragon's Bait and though it started really good, then ending was very abrupt and disappointed me.
And just this weekend, I finished reading both Eon: Dragoneye Reborn and it's sequel, Eona: The Last Dragoneye. I liked both of them, particularly because I thought the story was something completely new to what there's out there, but disliked the super fast pace it sometimes had and the rushed romance.

I don't know if I'll get to read another dragon them story this month, but I'll keep an eye on everyone's opinions about their chosen books :)

message 13: by Meg (new)

Meg (projectbookworm) Alright So I am reading Uprooted, and even though the secondary character is called the Dragon, he is not, in fact, a dragon.

However, I am still counting it.

I will say this - I was not too excited for this month, as I read a lot of books about dragons when I was younger, and felt like perhaps I'd outgrown them a little bit. Also, I've read a lot of YA and/or fantasy recently, so I was feeling a bit tired of the genre.

But Uprooted has been surprisingly good so far, able to hold my interest despite all of my initial hang-ups.

Renuka, how did you like Uprooted? Are you counting it for the month or reading another book to make up for the lack of actual dragons?

Yeah I've entered a bit of a reading slump haha. Although I was really enjoying Uprooted, no book is managing to hold my attention, sigh. Hopefully I can finish it in the next 5 days, but the lack of an actual dragon is disappointing tbh. Although I too feel the same way, I read a lot of books about dragons when I was younger so I feel the need for a lot more complexity in these books, you know? I'm glad Uprooted has such a beautiful style though!

I'm counting it for the month haha. He's still called the dragon lol. Maybe he turns into one hahaha.

Oh no. I really wanted to read Uprooted, but now I'm not so sure :(

message 16: by Melany (new)

Melany (globalbymel) Now done with His Majesty's Dragon and loved it! Gave it five stars. The dragons, especially Temeraire, are SO adorable and charming and funny. Laurence himself is kind of an idiot but his devotion to Temeraire makes up for everything. I will definitely be continuing the series at some point- the book I have has the first three all together so at some point (not immediately I need to take a break from dragons now) I'll be reading Throne of Jade!

Wow it's actually fantastic! There is sadly no Dragon but OH WELL, I'm counting it. It's a little bit like Deathless which we read earlier, but more traditionally fairy-tale like. It's surprisingly DARK! The Wood is EVIL. You can practically feel the malevolence. Don't read this late at night lol. The characters are lovely too. It's a little long, but very poetic and gothic.

message 18: by Tamara (new)

Tamara (tamarasan) I just finished A Natural History of Dragons and I really enjoyed it! I'm going to definitely finish the series, but I don't know if it will be right this moment.

I really liked Mrs. Camherst as a character and the drawings and descriptions of dragons were fantastic. This was written as a "non-fiction" account of a naturalist during an era that seems to be similar to the Victorian era--though it is in an entirely different universe.

I recommend it.
