Jo | 1094 comments This month we are looking for nominations for the 1930s (1930-1939). The only exclusion is War with the Newts by Karel ÄŒapek which was read last time round.

Current Nominations:
Gladiator by Philip Wylie
Swastika Night by Katharine Burdekin
Anthem by Ayn Rand
Out of the Silent Planet by C. S. Lewis

Ronald (rpdwyer) | 174 comments I nominate Gladiator by Philip Wylie:

I haven't read the book. Some things in its favor: average goodreads rating 3.85 and its on Project Gutenberg.

David Merrill | 240 comments I just read the description of Swastika Night by Katherine Burdekin (writing as Murray Constantine) on Wikipedia and it reminded me of The Man In The High Castle by Philip K. Dick, but this was written before WW 2 in 1937, when a lot of people in the U. S. were still thinking Hitler was doing good things for Germany. Sounds interesting, so I'll nominate it.

Good one! A friend turned me on to it a couple of years ago as the origin for the modern comic hero. I think it would be perfect for this group. I did a very short 4 star review & linked to my friend's, too.

Buck (spectru) | 900 comments There are a couple of novels from the 1930s that I really should read: Anthem by Ayn Rand and Out of the silent Planet by C. S. Lewis, but they both tend to push their own particular agendas, and I hold Rand's writing in low regard. Well, one of these days...

I nominate When Worlds Collide by Philip Wylie

Buck (spectru) | 900 comments I change my mind. Is that allowed? My library doesn't have When worlds Collide , but they do have Anthem and Out of the Silent Planet, both of which are fairly short. The great thing about novellas is that by the time you've decided that you don't like them, they're finished. So, I'd like to change (or add to) my nomination with one or both of these.

No problem, I will change the nomination to Anthem. I'd quite like to read C S Lewis's sci-fi I was reading about it somewhere recently so I will nominate Out of the silent planet.

I've removed when World Collide unless anybody else wants to nominate it....
