Tom | 282 comments I seem to have gone medieval as I've started Terry Jones' Medieval Lives. Life in a Medieval City and an audiobook version of The Canterbury Tales.

Ongoing is my plan to read all of the L Frank Baum Oz books from Oz: The Complete Collection - currently on #4.

According to goodreads I'm currently reading 40 books. I know that doesn't include all of them. I LOVE starting and finishing books, but sometimes the middle part is difficult for me.

However the books I've been most focused on finishing are:

Halo: The Fall of Reach by Eric Nylund (Rereading this with my son)
ProBlogger: Secrets for Blogging Your Way to a Six Figure Income By Chris Garrett
The Power of Unpopular: A Guide to Building Your Brand for the Audience Who Will Love You by Erika Napoletano
Miss Peregrine’s Home for Peculiar Children by Ransom Riggs

Sooo many books! So little time!

message 3: by Tom (new)

Tom | 282 comments I liked Miss Peregrine’s Home for Peculiar Children but I thought the sequel, Hollow City was better. Also, the third book, Library of Souls will be out in September, which I will read, but will wait for a Kindle sale to buy it.

message 5: by Scott (new)

Scott von Berg (scottobear) I've just started Hacker, Hoaxer, Whistleblower, Spy: The Many Faces of Anonymous and am currently chewing a little bit on a few books on the Maker Movement (along the lines of The Maker Movement Manifesto: Rules for Innovation in the New World of Crafters, Hackers, and Tinkerers and tech books for Raspberry Pi. On the Fiction side, I've been alternately digging Pines and Expiration Date

Maranda Carvell (marandacarvell) | 16 comments I'm reading Who Do You Love and so far it's very good.

message 8: by Scott (new)

Scott von Berg (scottobear) Just picked up How to Fly a Horse: The Secret History of Creation, Invention, and Discovery, and I think it looks like a winner, based on a very brief scan so far.

message 9: by Tom (new)

Tom | 282 comments An unusually large number of books going right now:

Kindle
Skinny Legs and All by Tom Robbins
Life in a Medieval Castle by Frances and Joseph Gies
The Complete Oz Collection by L Frank Baum (on book 6 of 14)

Audible
Outlander by Diana Gabaldon
Dad is Fat by Jim Gaffigan

How is Dad is Fat? I've actually met and seen Jim Gaffigan perform several times. I used to frequent comedy clubs when I lived in NYC. He's a cool and funny dude. "Hoooooooot pocket!"

I am currently focused on reading:

Paperback:
Attachments by Rainbow Rowell

E-book:
Outlander by Diana Gabaldon

And although I have not picked up another book I should probably also focus on something from my September To Be Read video. I guess I'll go with the little book...

Hardcover:
William Shakespeare's Star Wars by Ian Doescher

Dad is Fat is good, but don't expect a stand up show. It's a series of essays on parenting which is much more in your bailiwick than mine. I'd also suggest getting the audiobook since Gaffigan's narration definitely adds to the experience.

Thread Duty:

Kindle
Skinny Legs and All by Tom Robbins
The Complete Oz Collection by L Frank Baum (on book 6 of 14)

Audible
Outlander by Diana Gabaldon
Dad is Fat by Jim Gaffigan

I finished Life in a Medieval Castle today. I had a bit tougher time with this one since it had more architectural terms than Life in a Medieval City, but it was still understandable and well written.

Maranda Carvell (marandacarvell) | 16 comments You guys, I nominate Dumplin' for the next book. SO good! Very John Green-ish, with realistic characters and a sweet story, and very body positive.

I've heard good things about it on the book podcasts I listen to, and have mentioned it to Desirai.

Ooh! Tom mentioned this to me recently.

I just started The Cold One by Christopher Pike.

Tom | 282 comments Forgot to mention that I am also reading: The Autobiography of Malcolm X by Malcolm X
and continuing my journey through the Oz stories (8 of 14) in Oz: The Complete Collection by L. Frank Baum.

I picked up the Kindle complete Oz, and have to admit its a lot slower read than I had thought it would be so I pick it up, put it down, etc.

I've found the series doesn't quite lend itself to binge reading as the similarity between the stories becomes quickly apparent. Though as you said, reading it here and there is likely the best approach.

message 25: by Tom (new)

Tom | 282 comments I've finished The Scarecrow of Oz (Book 9 of 14) in the Oz series. An interesting story in that the premise seems to be fan-driven - it features a crossover of characters from another of Baum's fictional worlds.

I am close to being done with The Autobiography of Malcolm X. I think this is a must read for anyone who wants to understand race relations in America.

I've also pushed ahead a little further into The Fishermen - Chapter 2 that is.

message 26: by Tom (new)

Tom | 282 comments Finished The Fishermen by Chigozie Obioma. 4 Stars.

A few additional thoughts - parts of this book are pretty intense, which I did not expect when I picked it up. Also, if you're not using an e-reader, keep a dictionary handy as Obioma uses some wonderful words like guerdon and gallimaufry.

I am reading the epilogue to The Autobiography of Malcolm X, so I hope to have it completed by Monday.

And still 5 more Oz books to go before the end of the year.

message 27: by Tom (new)

Tom | 282 comments Finished The Autobiography of Malcolm X by Malcolm X. 4 Stars.

I will be starting The House of the Seven Gables by Nathaniel Hawthorne soon.

And yes, the Oz books are still happening.

message 28: by Tom (new)

Tom | 282 comments So, I read Arrow Season 2.5 last night. There's one chief item of interest...

(view spoiler)

message 30: by Maranda (new)

Maranda Carvell (marandacarvell) | 16 comments Finished The Rule of Three and Fight for Power and quite enjoyed them. On the younger side of teen but great stories, can't wait for the third instalment.

message 31: by Tom (last edited Dec 02, 2015 08:44AM) (new)

Tom | 282 comments Been a while since I've updated. I've re-read The Fishermen, and started The House of the Seven Gables by Nathaniel Hawthorne and Dragonfly in Amber by Diana Gabaldon. I'm listening to and reading both using the immersion feature on my Kindle Fire and Android phone.

Desirai | 261 comments Mod
I'm still reading Voyager by Diana Gabaldon. Soon to be reading The Murder House by James Patterson and David Ellis

message 35: by Tom (new)

Tom | 282 comments Going to start The Stranger by Albert Camus. Nothing like French Existentialism for the holidays.

message 37: by Tom (new)

Tom | 282 comments I'm hoping to get 4 books done by the end of the year (all of them hopefully on audiobook/Kindle).

Dragonfly in Amber by Diana Gabaldon
The Stranger by Albert Camus
The Meursault Investigation by Kamel Daoud
The Chimes by Charles Dickens

The last three of course are short, but only because the Gabaldon is SOOO dang long. I may end up just reading it rather than listening to it, but Davina Porter is SO good, I'd hate to miss her work.

message 41: by Tom (new)

Tom | 282 comments Well, I ran the numbers and found I'd have to read/listen to Dragonfly in Amber 5 hours/day every day to finish it by the 31st. Since that's not happening, I've decided to continue on with it into the new year, and instead found the goodreads entry for A Child's Christmas in Wales & Five Poems by Dylan Thomas since I listen to this collection every year around this time.

message 42: by Tom (last edited Dec 27, 2015 10:37PM) (new)

Tom | 282 comments Finished A Christmas Carol by Charles Dickens and narrated by Tim Curry. 5 Stars.

message 43: by Tom (new)

Tom | 282 comments Finished A Christmas Story by Jean Shepherd and narrated by Dick Cavett. 5 Stars.

message 44: by Tom (new)

Tom | 282 comments Finished The Cricket on the Hearth by Charles Dickens, narrated by Jim Dale. 3 Stars.

I have a question about the audiobook - as it seems to omit the very last paragraph in the novella. Does anyone know what the original should be? I've looked at Project Gutenberg and a couple of other sites and their texts have the missing paragraph.

message 45: by Tom (new)

Tom | 282 comments Finished The Chimes by Charles Dickens, narrated by Richard Armitage. 4 Stars.

Seemed appropriate given it's set on/around New Year's Eve. Here's to a happy 2016.

Maranda Carvell (marandacarvell) | 16 comments Landline was good although a little weird, but the style sort of reminded me of Carrie Fisher's early work (I love her books). Very relatable despite the premise.

I just finished Divas Don't Knit which is pure and utter chicklit, but was a nice holiday read.

Currently reading Moody Bitches: The Truth About the Drugs You're Taking, The Sleep You're Missing, The Sex You're Not Having, and What's Really Making You Crazy (non-fiction) and waiting desperately for the third The Rule of Three book to come out next week.

i really enjoyed Dumplin'. It's sort of Sarah Dessen meets John Green. With Dolly Parton lyrics. What's not to love? <3
