Rachmi | 55 comments Rough and tumble Saturday Woodcutter thinks she's the only one of her sisters without any magic—until the day she accidentally conjures an ocean in the backyard. With her sword in tow, Saturday sets sail on a pirate ship, only to find herself kidnapped and whisked off to the top of the world. Is Saturday powerful enough to kill the mountain witch who holds her captive and save the world from sure destruction? And, as she wonders grumpily, "Did romance have to be part of the adventure?" As in Enchanted, readers will revel in the fragments of fairy tales that embellish this action-packed story of adventure and, yes, romance.

Since we're all love Enchanted and as the poll result shows, we will read two books from Woodcutter Sisters series this month.

But this is a thread for Hero, Saturday Woodcutter's story and as for book 3, Dearest will be on another thread. Happy reading!

Heidi Garrett (heidi_g) | 218 comments Rach, This looks great. What a good idea to have two separate threads! I have Hero on order from the library, so will probably start it within the next week or ten days.

Lisa | 415 comments Mod
This one I already picked up from the library and will start this weekend. Wow, Rach! I hadn't even read the preview synopsis for Hero, but knew I wanted to read it based on how much I enjoyed the writing style of Enchanted and loved the character of Saturday. Now I'm looking forward to it even more!

I think so too. After Enchanted I have high expectation for the series now :)

I think we can be more focus on the story if we discuss it in separate thread. And then it'll be easier for us in the future when we want to look back again for our discussion.

I don't think I can reading it ASAP, though. Next week I'll read another fantasy book by Neil Gaimain and it's a huge book I might need a week to finish it :)

Haha, me too! In fact I only realized that book three, Dearest is the swan tale retelling after you mentioned it on its thread. These two books were one-clicked books for me after I finished Enchanted :D

I love Neil Gaiman! He's one of my favorite authors. When you made the suggestion for reading his short story book, I was franticly looking for another short story to read with it to make that selection. Which one are you reading, Rachmi?

Rachmi | 55 comments He's one of my favorite authors too! High five, Lisa :D I'm going to read American Gods, already have it since 5 years ago but somehow always put it on hold whenever I want to read. As much as I love his books, I always think that I need a certain mood before I read them. His books are always weird so I'm kinda prepare myself for their weirdness. Now I sound weird myself, hahaha.

Speaking of short story, have you read his collection of short stories called A Calender of Tale? The idea behind it is so awesome, in my opinion. He asked his readers in Twitter to twitt him back their memory of certain month in a year. Then he wrote them into short stories. And it's free, with beautiful illustration. If you haven't read it, you can give it a try. Even if you don't like it, you can just admire the illustration :D

Lisa | 415 comments Mod
I haven't read that collection, so will have to look it up. Thank you! I'm exactly like you with American Gods. lol I have it sitting on one of my bookshelves where it has been for years, but haven't read it yet. I keep wondering if I'll really like that one. My fav of his is still Neverwhere, and I keep wanting him to write more about that world and characters. He is weird, but it's a good weird most of the time.

Lisa | 415 comments Mod
Rachmi, where did you download Calendar of Tales from, please?

Rachmi | 55 comments Agree, Neil Gaiman books are weird in a good way. Neverwhere is my favorite too! Well...I cannot decide which one is my most favorite between Neverwhere and The Ocean at the End of the Lane. So they are my two favorites so far.

There are links for A Calendar of Tale here in Å·±¦ÓéÀÖ. Just type A Calendar of Tale in Å·±¦ÓéÀÖ engine then you can find them at the end of the blurb. You can choose in three formats; epub, pdf, and mobi I think. But if you cannot find them, you can check on my review, I put it there at the end of my review. Sorry I cannot post it here, I'm on my phone now and I cannot do it from Å·±¦ÓéÀÖ app :)

Shana Benson | 6 comments This was a great story to suggest. :) I missed the Enchanted read, so I had some catching up to do! Thanks for suggesting the series. Can't wait to start Dearest.

I'm so glad you enjoyed them, Shana! Things have been kind of busy for me lately, so I have only just barely started Hero, but I know I'll love it.

I love that the author almost immediately brought in references to other tales with a twist. (view spoiler)

OK, you guys have been super quiet this month. I'm getting concerned. Is anyone else reading this? I finished Hero a few days ago. Unfortunately, my hold on Dearest at the library was sent back since I couldn't get there in time to pick it up, so have to reserve again. As far as Hero goes, I enjoyed the tale, but not nearly as much as I expected. I still adore Saturday, and loved the plot and the characters of Peregrine and Betwixt, but I really missed all the interactions with the other siblings. I think that was one of the things I most enjoyed about Enchanted - even though it was Sunday's tale, all of the family were totally involved. With Saturday's tale, some of her family were there for short time frames, but not that often, and there was very little interaction.

Heidi Garrett (heidi_g) | 218 comments Hi Lisa:) Yes this has been a quiet month! I have gotten quite derailed and hope to be getting back on track by October. Anyway, I just renewed Hero, so I'm hoping to get to it very soon. IN THE MEANTIME, Rach and I have been discussing some alternate ways to set up book discussions. We're getting ready to get everything set up to roll out for October, which is why we haven't set up a poll for October yet. I should have a message out to everyone by Friday (fingers crossed!) The overarching idea is to be more flexible and allow members more freedom with the books they read and discuss!

Cool. So very glad that you guys are doing OK too. I was getting worried that there had been health set backs or something.

message 18: by Heidi (new)

Heidi Garrett (heidi_g) | 218 comments Lisa, it has been just a very odd month:) Nothing dire, but boy did I get derailed from "the best laid plans"!

So...I began reading Hero last night, I'm about two chapters in. So far so good. I do enjoy how Kontis uses fairies and the fey... But did anyone get anything about Monday's missing daughter in Enchanted? If that was brought up in that story, it really blew by me!

message 19: by Heidi (new)

Heidi Garrett (heidi_g) | 218 comments So Shana, did you already read both Enchanted and Hero?!?!?! :)

message 20: by Lisa (new) - rated it 4 stars

Lisa | 415 comments Mod
No, Heidi, you are correct as far as I remember. No mention was made of Monday's daughter. Actually, very little was said about Monday's life at all, other than the fact that she had married a prince and lived in a castle. I guess I had kind of assumed hers was the "Cinderella" tale. Now, though, I almost wonder if it was more Beauty and the Beast. Kontis needs to write Monday's tale and Thursday's too!

Shana Benson | 6 comments Yes Heidi, in fact I have read all three

message 22: by Lisa (new) - rated it 4 stars

Lisa | 415 comments Mod
Shana, did you like any of them better than others? If so, why?

Shana Benson | 6 comments I think that all of the books were great, but I have to say that Dearest is my favorite. I loved the combination of tales in the story. I loved how the author changed the Swan's tale to something that wasn't exactly the tale.

message 24: by Lisa (new) - rated it 4 stars

Good to know! Now I'm looking forward to reading Dearest. My hold on that book at the library had expired before I could get it, so had to request it again. Thanks!

Rachmi | 55 comments I just finished the book last night, and as much as I enjoyed it I have to say I think Enchanted is better than this one.

It was hard to connect with the characters, unlike when I read Enchanted. And at the beginning, I didn't quite like how jumpy the flow is. I honestly don't know whether jumpy is the right word, but I hope you understand what I mean :D

And then the ending, where (view spoiler) suddenly pop up in the story without so much description about their whereabouts felt like out of the blue.

I do love Saturday and Peregrin and Betwixt relationship, though. And it's kinda a funny thing thinking Peregrin with his skirt and acts like a girl.

I agree, Rachmi. Unlike Enchanted, the setting changes didn't flow smoothly in Hero. I was also slightly surprised when those two characters popped up, especially the one. (view spoiler)

I'm glad you understand what I mean! was jumpy the right word or should I use another word that more appropriate?

Although (view spoiler). So I was also surprised when he popped up at the end of the book. And yes, it wasn't something I enjoyed either. I was like "where did they come from?" I actually tried reread a couple pages as I thought I missed something about them.

Ooh - I wasn't aware of the other book. There is also one expanding the tales of Ariland. So much to read!!

message 29: by Diane (new)

Diane | 31 comments I am late to this discussion even though I read both Dearest and Hero immediately following our read of Enchanted but I wanted to chime in and say:

YES "jumpy" is the right word. I really liked Hero but I have to say the storytelling/flow seemed to be working really hard to make me *not* like it. If that makes sense. I was really interested in seeing how it ended so, for me, that made the lack of flow something I could plow through.

Which brings me to: wth ending? I'm with you guys in not enjoying the (view spoiler). I also had the "wait, did I miss something?" feeling (and with the way the story seemed to be stilted, I thought I may well have!)

message 30: by Lisa (new) - rated it 4 stars

Lisa | 415 comments Mod
Exactly, Diane and Rachmi. I actually did go back and re-read parts to see if I had missed something. Those additional characters just seemed so weird and un-necessary.

Rachmi | 55 comments Thank you, Diane! I don't have to edit my review then, since I put jumpy in there :D What do you think of Dearest? will you discuss it in its thread? I haven't read it yet, but I think I'm going to read it eventually, though not this month. I'm going to read The Martian first, as I want to watch its movie version.

I think I understand why the author put those additional characters in the story (view spoiler) It's just the way the author delivered it that I think didn't work well. In the end it makes the story feel stilted, and yes unnecessary, particularly regarding those characters.

Heidi Garrett (heidi_g) | 218 comments So... jumpy:) Yes. I'll have to agree, I was just trying to figure out why this has been such slow going for me. I'm at about chapter 5 and kind of ummm ... is this the same Saturday I so enjoyed in Enchanted?!?!?!

Agree, I also feel that Saturday here isn't Saturday in Enchanted, at least at the beginning at the story. It's like she's completely different person I've known in previous book.

Here's my review, if you interested to read :) /review/show...
