Nick (doily) | 1001 comments Hi everyone,

It's time to open nominations for our November 2015 Books of the Month. Each group member can make 1 science fiction and/or 1 fantasy nomination in this thread. If you would like to make a nomination, please reply to this post with the title and author of the book(s) you would like to put forward for the group’s consideration. A couple of suggestions to keep in mind:

1. Telling us a little about the book and why you think it would be a good group read can help get other members interested in reading (and voting for) your nomination.

2. To see if your nomination has already been read by the group, you can check:

a. the group's bookshelf for Previous Books of the Month: /group/books...

and/or

b. these threads:
Master List of Previous Books of the Month 2012-Present: /topic/show/...
Master List of Previous Books of the Month 2006-2011: /topic/show/...

Books the group has read in the past 2 years are not eligible for current consideration. Being chosen as a past BotM prior to that time is not an automatic disqualification, but be aware that it may hinder your nomination’s chances at the polls.

General guidelines:
Feel free to re-nominate a book that didn’t win in the polls in previous months!
For questions regarding specifics such as book formats, books in series, self-nomination and various rules for nominations, please see the group FAQ.
Seconding isn't necessary in this group.
Friendly discussion & debate is strongly encouraged, but let's please keep things civil.

Poll schedule:
Nominations will remain open through Friday, September 20.
The first round of polls will open Monday, September 21, and will run through Friday, September 25.
The run-off polls go up Saturday, September 26, and will be open through Wednesday, September 30.

Thanks!

Nick (doily) | 1001 comments FYI -- The Malazan Book of the Fallen series discussion is still going strong! Thanks to Kathi for moderating, and to the folks who are participating. It is a complex and looks-to-be rewarding series! I have often been tempted into it and, though there may be spoilers, I enjoy reading about it from those who are charging through the ten novels book by book: /topic/group...

message 3: by Helen (new)

Helen It is excellent, as is Kathi.

Mods, ok for me to nominate Last Song Before Night this time around? It's being published at the end of the month. Here is the author's website for anyone who would like to learn more:

Just to be on the safe side, I have to concur with Candiss' observation that publications do not always come out when they say they are going to. Let's wait until it is out, then nominate. If your timeline is correct, that means you can nominate next month!

message 8: by Bill (last edited Sep 15, 2015 03:50PM) (new)

Bill For fantasy I would like to nominate The Traitor Baru Cormorant it is the debut novel from Seth Dickinson. It came up in GR recommendations based on something I read and the blurb looks interesting. It came out yesterday.

carol. | 173 comments For sci-fi, I'm interested in The Peripheral. My friends seem to have enjoyed it, and it sounds like the type of sci-fi thriller that is fast-paced and interesting. A Locus nominee for 2015.

For fantasy, Sorcerer to the Crown. Although a couple of people have described it as similar to Jonathan Strange and Mr. Norrell (which I did not care for), it still sounds interesting. Historical England, interesting female lead, and a book with a lot of buzz.

got it! :)

message 11: by Alexa (new)

Alexa (AlexaNC) | 64 comments For fantasy I would like to nominate Waking the Moon by Elizabeth Hand. I keep seeing it referred to as a "cult classic" and I've been wanting to read it for ages! It was a World Fantasy Award Nominee for Best Novel in 1995, and it won the Mythopoeic Fantasy Award for Adult Literature in 1996, AND the James Tiptree Jr. Award in 1995!

message 12: by Mary (last edited Sep 15, 2015 06:31PM) (new)

Mary Catelli | 701 comments For fantasy: The Queen's Necklace by Teresa Edgerton. One of the early clockpunk works. Swashbuckling adventure and political intrigue in a hundred kingdom, heirs to the fallen Goblin Empire.

For SF: Ice Crown by Andre Norton. A book by the classic author. Far future technology holds a planet in thrall, and an off-worlder finds herself in the middle of the issues. (In print, but I think only in the omnibus Ice and Shadow)

Well, The Queen's Necklace has a couple of new-to-me monikers in its genre list -- "Fantasy of Manners" and "Mannerpunk"! I nearly fell outta my chair.

message 14: by Mary (new)

Mary Catelli | 701 comments Yeah, Fantasy of Manners was a more popular term a while back, I think -- invented in 1991.

LOL! Whatever it's called, it's a lovely book - I read it some years ago and would be happy to read it again if the group chooses it!

message 16: by Nick (new)

Nick (doily) | 1001 comments I think I will throw in for a Sci Fi nomination a book of short stories -- they do not often do well in the voting, but Bacigalupi was popular just a little while back, and maybe now's the time. I'll nominate Pump Six and Other Stories by Paolo Bacigalupi.

message 17: by Justine (new)

Justine (justine_ao) | 629 comments For SF I would like to nominate Touch by Claire North (author of The First Fifteen Lives of Harry August).

I've actually read this one and really enjoyed it. It is about an entity without a body called Kepler who takes over host bodies temporarily and for varying periods of time, who transfers consciousness from host to host through touch.

message 18: by Lulu (new)

Lulu (robotwitch) | 65 comments Going to put up The Bees for fantasy again. I keep hearing many good words for it, and the plot/setting is very unique!

For sci fi, I'm going for Ancillary Mercy. The first two have been read, and it seems like a good idea to close out the series with everyone in the group :)

message 19: by Nick (last edited Sep 20, 2015 11:19AM) (new)

Nick (doily) | 1001 comments Polls go up tomorrow, hopefully. Today, there are glitches in the book search system. I hope they are corrected by tomorrow, so that we can keep to our schedule.

Hrrrrrmph!

In the meantime, you can still nominate (one more day) for our December selections!

message 20: by Alexa (new)

Alexa (AlexaNC) | 64 comments For science fiction I would like to nominate The Best of All Possible Worlds by Karen Lord. Whenever an author starts getting compared to Ursula K. LeGuin I think it's time to take a look!
