"Do the right thing"

That's what Gary's wife told him after he witnesses the brutal attack of an off duty police officer. After telling the police what he saw and describing the attackers he is able to identify the main perpetrator as vicious local thug Johnny Banter, and the police issue a warrant for his arrest.

Instead of following one single character this book follows the actual rumour of Johnny's imminent arrest as it is spread from person to person, until it eventually reaches Johnny himself. Needless to say he is none too happy that somebody has spoken to the police about him and he sets out to find out who ratted him out. He follows the trail of the rumour and one by one works his way through everybody who spread it, hoping it will lead him to a confrontation with a terrified Gary.
