Carly (queen_of_darkness) | 175 comments I already have a big "to read list" of books that I want to read this month, because i'm always in the mood to read horror books. I already have Frankenstein by Mary Shelley, the complete poems and short stories by Edgar A. Poe the books of blood by Clive Barker and the woman in black on my to read list. Other books i'm currently reading are the crow novels and miscellaneous books about history or celebrities that I admire.
I am embarrassed to admit that I still haven't read Frankenstein by Mary Shelley yet!
Anyway what books would you recommend to read this month or on halloween?
There are some authors whose books I haven't read any of their work and i'm not sure if I would like their style of writing of what they write about. Otherwise there are books that I want to read by authors that I already like but I haven't read them yet haunted by Chuck Palahnuik I like his perverse, gritty weird funny style. Other authors i'm interested in checking out are Ray Bradbury and Neil Gaiman i've never read any of their books.
Sorry this is a long post.. I'm pretty bored right now.

Kieron | 1 comments I have just read NOS4A2 by Joe Hill, I can recommend that, it was very creepy. My Halloween read this year is going to be The Shining. It is always high up on best horror lists, so I am going to give it a try.

I've read the first two stories in: The End of Summer: Thirteen Tales of Halloween by J. Tonzelli and they were pretty good and well-written.

Erin *Proud Book Hoarder* (erinpaperbackstash) | 943 comments I need to read Frankenstein this month too

Carly (queen_of_darkness) | 175 comments Thank you for your recommendations, I don't really understand the buddy reading system and how it works..
I have never heard of some these books, so i'll check them out. I really can't wait to read crimson peak, before seeing the film, because it looks really good, Stephen King and his son went to see the film and they said it was terrifying.
I really like the mammoth book of anthologies, I have one about dracula and vampire romance.

message 12: by Elizabeth (new)

Elizabeth I would say check out these 2 books which are Burial Ground by Michael McBride by Michael McBride(OMG what can I say about it , I loved it , and I'm definitely picking it up again to read, if you love Michael Crichton's book Congo or any of his work then you'll like this one by Michael McBride or at lest I think so. So go check it out. This story kept me coming back for more and had me on the edge of my bed the entire time I was reading it}and the 2nd one is Dinosaur Lake by Kathryn Meyer Griffith (OMG this is another one that had me hooked from the first page just like Burial Ground by Michael McBride did, and just like Burial Ground once it has you hooked it won't let you go, you have to keep reading because you have to know what happens next. If you loved Jurassic Park by Michael Crichton then you have to check this one out. Its only book one to the series but I'm going to pick up books 2 and 3 when I can to see what happens ,this is definitely a book to pick up for the month of October or any time you want to read a good book.)

In a buddy read, we all read the book together then talk about it or discuss. Sometimes it's read a certain # of chapters a day, sometimes not. There would be a thread for whatever book the buddy read is for.

Quentin Wallace (quentinwallace) | 173 comments I just read Halloween Spirits: 11 Tales for the Darkest Night and I was very impressed. Great collection of stories for Halloween!

The Halloween Man

Currently reading Harvest Moon, which has a great start:

Harvest Moon

Robert Mingee (robertmingee) | 776 comments Jonathan Maberry's Pine Deep Trilogy is great Haloween reading: Ghost Road Blues, Dead Man's Song, Bad Moon Rising. As is Stwerat O'Nan's brilliant The Night Country. Also Norman Partridge's Dark Harvest. I could go on, but with all the others you probably have more than enough now. :-)

message 18: by Katy (new)

Katy Mann | 988 comments Last year, Amazon had specials on horror books. Has anyone seen a special this year? I picked up a number of books by Richard Laymon and some others. Has anyone seen such a special this year? I saw a link to Halloween thrillers but I was looking for horror.

Let me know, thanks!

Katy Mann | 988 comments I just read John Everson's Pumpkin Man. The Pumpkin Man

The Pumpkin Man by John Everson

Starting on Kilborn's Haunted house. Haunted House by Jack Kilborn But these other suggestions look great. I really liked Dark Harvest. Dark Harvest by Norman Partridge

Picked up both Burial Grounds and Dinosaur Lake. Both prices were right - .99 and Free! I love October specials. Just gotta start reading...

Carly (queen_of_darkness) | 175 comments I personally like reading at my own pace, because it makes my eyes ache after awhile if I have been reading for a long time. I have bad eyesight and have to wear my glasses everyday to correct the way my left eye focuses on something that I am looking at because it is abnormal.
My glasses make my eyes ache which then gives me a headache if I have been straining my eyes for a long time which sucks.
I like Richard Laymon and Jame Herbert books well.

I am curious about the burial grounds book and I would like to read it, and another book called you by Caroline Kepnes which is apparently creepy.

I just read Frankenstein for the first time last year. It was not what I was expecting.

message 23: by Zoe (new)

Zoe | 1 comments Three Imaginary Boys by J.T. Holden

It's subtitled A Halloween Story in Three Acts (though it's a novel and not a play, the titling of each part as an "act" is more than appropriate).

Act One - Psychological Thriller, with a hint of the supernatural creeping in near the end.

Act Two - Mystery/Suspense, with a harrowing midpoint climax and thought-provoking bridge into the final act.

Act Three - Supernatural Horror, with a truly spooky climax and shocking twist.

If you're looking for a good Halloween read, this is it.

Carly (queen_of_darkness) | 175 comments Mary Shelly didn't live a happy life, she lose a baby due to having miscarriage before she wrote the story so this may have influenced her obsession with death and reanimated corpses.
She met Percy Bysshe who eventually became her husband when she was a teenager, he was much older than her and they were both friends with Lord Byron. I like the idea of life after death and the theory of reanimating corpses is interesting.
Thank you for everyone's suggestions, it's helpful to keep myself busy since my aunt died..

Im probably going to read Frankenstein finally this month. I have a feeling it won't be what I'm expected either. I know some dislike it and some love it, so I'm holding my breath with hope.

I just finished this book - it took me months, although I'm a fast reader, because its difficult. This book is terrifying even though there aren't too many "scary" concepts - the writing is what drives the horror. Everything about this book has an edge, like reading a dagger. Just check it out, definitely Halloween worthy.

message 28: by Carly (new)

Carly (queen_of_darkness) | 175 comments I am sometimes a slow reader, depending on if the book i'm reading is boring or just slow paced. I am going to get this book eventually there are just so many books I want to read, for some reason I feel like reading all the books that I own at the moment.

message 29: by Sarah (new)

Elizabeth what about In a Dark, Dark Wood by Ruth Ware I received copy of In a Dark ,Dark, Wood through my Å·±¦ÓéÀÖ group A life Of A Book Addict since Simon and Schuster were giving away 20 copies of this new book, after reading what the book was about I decided to try and get a copy of it, so glad that I received a copy. Wanted to wait to the last week of October to read it but I just couldn't wait any more ,so glad that I didn't wait because I just finished it and loved it so much , once I started to read I just couldn't put it down ,it had me from the start and had me on the edge of me chair and bed with every turn of the page, it was like I was there and could see and feel every thing that was happing . Its a must read , for anyone who loves to read novels that are :sinister , suspenseful, compulsive. and is a bit dark as well as twisted .

I started it, but I'm only a few pages in and the writing seems pretty good and interesting.
