The Nightingale by Kristin Hannah
- What is the current average rating of the book?
4.53
- Do you usually use the ratings to choose a book?
Usually I decide whether I want to read a book or not by the blurb. I do perhaps let the ŷ ratings influence me more then I should. I feel like I should not judge a book I'm interested in just because it received a low rating.

Sam F | 82 comments - What are you reading this week?

I am reading Unbroken: A World War II Story of Survival, Resilience, and Redemption which has been very interesting, but I haven't had as much time to finish the book this past week as I would have liked. I will work toward finishing it by the end of the month.

- What is the current average rating of the book? 4.44

- Do you usually use the ratings to choose a book?

Very rarely. I usually choose something from my book shelf - books I've accumulated over time. If I'm getting something from the library, it's usually recommended or a group read.

Lyndi (mibookobsession) (mibookobsession) I'm reading City of Heavenly Fire
There were a few on my list rated higher, but they're either part of a series, or I wasn't able to get from the library at this time.
Sometimes I pay attention to ratings, but not everyone has the same opinion about a book. For example, Fifty Shades of Grey is rated high, but I couldn't even finish it

message 56: by Rachel (new)

Rachel A. (abyssallibrarian) | 3237 comments What are you reading this week?
I'm reading The Nightingale.

What is the current average rating of the book?
Right now, it's at 4.53 with over 124, 000 ratings. To be fair, I set some limits on this category. I had a couple of books on my list that technically had a higher rating, but based on fewer than 10 ratings. I also have Lobster Is the Best Medicine: A Collection of Comics About Friendship on my list which is at 4.54 but it also doesn't have a ton of ratings.

Do you usually use the ratings to choose a book?
Not really. I tend to look at what rating a book got more out of curiosity than anything else. Sometimes it's interesting to see how other people rated a book I either really loved or really hated. I don't think I've ever let a low rating sway my decision as long as the synopsis interests me.

I look at the rating and if its low it might make me think twice however its more the reviews, book cover and the description of the book that I pay more attention too.

- Do you usually use the ratings to choose a book? If it's by an author I'm familiar with, no, but if it's all new to me, I look at it, but won't necessarily use it as a determining factor.

- Do you usually use the ratings to choose a book? I look at ratings but I normally read the negative comments just to see if there is anything that would turn me off. Otherwise I figure we all have different tastes so don't take too much attention to the actual rating.

Do you usually use the ratings to choose a book? I've never used the ratings when picking which books to read. This is the first time I picked a book based on it's rating, but only because of the challenge.

Katerina (katejohnsson) | 56 comments I have read Zvuk slunečních hodin. Rating is 4.67. I don't use rating to choose the book. The reviews of my friends and then of other people is more helpful.

Do you usually use the ratings to choose a book?
No, I usually take a look at the ratings but I don't choose a book based on them. A lot of books that I've read and liked have a poor rating, sometimes because not a lot of people have read them.

Not usually. In fact I try not to use the ratings, because often people are rating the topic, not the quality of the wriring, the brilliance of the storyline, the character development.

Yes, I usually only read books about a 3.5. I typically will look at the average and then skim the first few reviews to make sure that they're fairly in line.

I take a look at the rating, but almost only when I'm not sure if the story is really interesting to me or not, to see what the average rating is.

Molly (bookshelfmystic) | 25 comments -What are you reading this week?
Like many in this thread, I read The Wise Man's Fear by Patrick Rothfuss.

- What is the current average rating of the book?
4.55

- Do you usually use the ratings to choose a book?
No, but a book with less than 3 stars does make me a bit wary. I certainly didn't agree with the mid-4's rating of The Name of the Wind (I gave it two stars), so it's fair to say ratings are a poor indicator of how much I'll actually like a book.

- Do you usually use the ratings to choose a book? Not really. I go more by what some of the reviews say, although I try not to let those influence me too much. Some people may love a book and some will hate it. My book selections are more about how interesting the subject matter sounds and if there are not too many 1* ratings associated with it.

Alexis (TheSlothReader) This week I read The Nightingale by Kristin Hannah. This book is rated an average of 4.54 stars. I don't rely on the rating so much as friend's reviews. If my friends who have similar reading tastes to me didn't enjoy a book, then there is a good chance that I won't either.

Not particularly. Only if I'm on the fence about a book. Like, if I saw the title or cover somewhere, or if the synopsis sounds a little too cliched, and I need another opinion.

- Do you usually use the ratings to choose a book?

Yes and no...There are many other criteria I use before I look at the ratings. They are so subjective. I have a friend who rates every book she reads a 5. Really?! Everyone has a different way of seeing a book, so the rating is the last thing I look at. However, I am trying to read a better class of book. So the rating needs to be considered. I am looking more at literary fiction than I have in the past.

Golden Son

- What is the current average rating of the book?
Currently it is sitting at 4.47. I think it was 4.52 when I added it to my list.

- Do you usually use the ratings to choose a book?
Definitely. They play a part in whether or not, or sometimes how quickly I pick up a book. Bad ratings won't necessarily stop me from reading a book, but generally I tend to choose books that have at least a 3* rating. I want to enjoy what I read, so I appreciate the ratings. I also read a number of reviews and make sure to read at least a few of both positive and negative to try and get a balanced perspective before adding or discounting a book.

What is the current average rating of the book? It's presently at 4.60. It's gone up since Joy read it, apparently.

Do you usually use the ratings to choose a book? They're not the only thing I use to determine whether or not I read a book but I'd be lying if I said they don't play any role in my book selection. I'm most likely to be swayed by the rating of friends than of the GR average.

The Road Home. I loved it,too, although it was so painful to read.

- What is the current average rating of the book?
4.55 (383 ratings altogether)
- Do you usually use the ratings to choose a book?
Yes, I take them into account, when the books has been on the market for a while (especially the ratings of reviewers whose opinion is often compatible with mine). But there are some books which I really, really love, which do not range paricularly high (i.e. One Whole and Perfect Day, Chime ...). that shows that there is no formula to follow in order to find my next favorite.

Do you usually use the ratings to choose a book?
I usually don't use ratings, unless it's a book I've never heard of. Mostly, I go by reviews and recommendations of friends. Also, I have a former college roommate that has since led a very different life than I have. We are GR acquaintances but usually if she rates a book 5 stars, I have found that I won't like it (and conversely, I tend to really enjoy her 1 and 2 stars). So I do go by her ratings. :)

I don't use the rating as a criteria for selecting a book but do look at it. I also look to see which of my friends have read it and how they rated & reviewed it. I have several GR friends who are AVID readers and whose interests are similar to mine so I do consider their ratings when making choices.
