Maybe you're lucky enough to actually be reading on the beach but either way, it's time for the summer book list!
For those reading in order: April 29- May 5.

Suggestions for this week: /topic/show/...
To discuss the book, don't forget to add it in the A-Z folders or join the existing discussion.

Progress Post:
- What are you reading this week?
- Where do you plan on doing most of your reading?
- What do summers usually look like for you?
- Do you typically read different books during the different seasons?

EDIT: The lists came out a little later this year (or I didn't catch them right away) but if you're a jumper and are still looking for a book for this week then the suggestions have been updated for 2016!

/topic/show/...

Jody (jodybell) | 3477 comments I just found this list on List Challenges: which might help too. I had to laugh, as one of the books on this beach list is Jaws ... I can't think of a less likely beach read than that!! :O

I would have put Jaws down but I read that one for the first time last year, and Sharcano had been on my Kindle TBR for a year since I got it back in 2015.

Lieke | 697 comments I read Going Dutch by Katie Fforde.

I do most of my reading on my couch, but I also read in bed, in the car, in the train.....

Working and hopefully a vacation with time for reading.

No I don't think I do. I just pickup whatever I want to read.

Julia (_mj_howard) Funny Girl by Nick Hornby

- Where do you plan on doing most of your reading?
We have a cabin near the beach and spend a lot of time during the summer there, and that's another reason I chose this book from "The Smart Girl’s Guide to Summer Beach Reads" and I had to read this book for another book club so ended up reading it earlier(FEB). Which is summer here in Australia.

- What do summers usually look like for you?
I usually have to work some of the summer, but sometimes get a couple of weeks off, but definitely most weekend are down the beach.

- Do you typically read different books during the different seasons?
No, I just read what interests me or what is recommended to me. And with this book it was great going back to the 1960's. It was written very well making it an easy read (usually a good indication of a summer read), and the characters were funny and very entertaining.

message 8: by Kira (new)

Kira | 9 comments I read "Did I Mention I Love You" by Estelle Maskame. This is the first challenge I completed this year. This books take place in California amidst the sunny beaches, raging bonfires, and luxury shopping sprees. I gave this book 4/5 stars. It was nice to read a sunny book in the gloomy Maryland blizzard that recently overtook us. The only place better to read this book would be on the beach taking in some rays.

message 9: by Claudia (new)

Claudia | 19 comments I read I've Got Your Number by Sophie Kinsella from this list: /list/show/5...

Where do you plan on doing most of your reading?
Probably on my balcony.

What do summers usually look like for you?
For vacation, I usually take a road trip through a different country. The rest of the time is spent between work and going to the lake by bike.

Do you typically read different books during the different seasons?
Not really.

message 10: by Emily (new)

Emily (emilyesears) | 412 comments I read Beautiful Ruins for this week. It appeared on Modern Mrs. Darcy's 2014 Summer Reading List, which you can see

Where do you plan on doing most of your reading?

In the summers, I tend to read outside until about mid-July when Texas goes berserk and starts hitting 100 degrees Fahrenheit every day. Then I curl up by the AC.

- What do summers usually look like for you?

Well, when I'm in school it's online classes for the first 6 weeks and then free time the next 6. But now that I'm working, I think it'll just be working and maybe a few vacation days here and there.

- Do you typically read different books during the different seasons?

Not really. I read what appeals. I don't pick books based on season.

Tina | 157 comments Attachments (Modern Mrs. 2014 Summer Reading List)

- Where do you plan on doing most of your reading? Couch (we have winter now).
- What do summers usually look like for you? Too hot; outside reading
- Do you typically read different books during the different seasons? No.

message 12: by Reg (new)

Reg Mars (bookish_in_bed) | 21 comments I picked to read Bridget Jones's Diary

- Where do you plan on doing most of your reading? I like to do most of my reading either on my couch or in my bed. I usually can't focus in other places.

- What do summers usually look like for you? Well usually I try to travel. At least one trip during the summer. I find myself hanging out more with friends. Catching up on my free time. Last summer I had a lot of free time and did a lot of reading during the month of June. This summer I should have a job by then so not so much free time. :(

- Do you typically read different books during the different seasons? No.

Lyndi (mibookobsession) (mibookobsession) I'm reading this in week 9 because my ebook hold became available through the library. The book I choose for this week is In the Unlikely Event by Judy Blume
Most of my summer reading is done while camping and fishing. Sitting in a boat reading under a hot summer sun sounds really good now in freezing February Michigan weather where it's 28°.
Right now I'm snuggled up with a blanket and a cup of coffee in my recliner, just about finished with my week 8 book.

Where do you plan on doing most of your reading?
on the train and in bed

What do summers usually look like for you?
Hot hot hot here in Australia. A bit of pool, beach, work of course.

Do you typically read different books during the different seasons?
nope. I read all books all year around.

message 15: by Maple (new)

Maple (maplerie) | 1025 comments I am reading two books for this week, so I can complete the series. Go big or go home, right? haha

The Notebook & The Wedding
The Notebook (The Notebook, #1) by Nicholas Sparks The Wedding (The Notebook, #2) by Nicholas Sparks

Where do you plan on doing most of your reading?
Anywhere I have a few moments to spare.

What do summers usually look like for you?
It depends on where I am working or living each year. This year I am planning a lot of camping trips, mostly just so I can get away out into the wilderness to explore and read.

Do you typically read different books during the different seasons?
Not typically. I just read whatever feels right at the moment, or is next on my lists.

message 16: by Amanda (new)

Amanda Brady | 69 comments See Me by Nicholas Sparks

This is my monthly face to face book club book and I just needed to plug it in somewhere. Nicholas Sparks reminds me of the beach and summer because his novels are usually set in a beach town and they always seem to be on the book shelves when we rent a beach house on the south east American coast.

- Where do you plan on doing most of your reading? My couch or my bed.

- What do summers usually look like for you? I'm usually home with my kids and we do a lot of summer day trips like to the beach, zoo, amusement park, etc.

- Do you typically read different books during the different seasons? No.

message 17: by Adam (new)

Adam Smith (chaos624) | 1197 comments Reading The Ice Twins

Summers are usually no big thing. I've been working the past three years straight with only a month's break that usually comprises of catching up on sleep. Hoping this year is more relaxing.

Seasons don't really effect my reading patterns. I read what I want when I want.

message 18: by Stacey (last edited Mar 11, 2016 04:00PM) (new)

Stacey D. | 1908 comments I just finished All the Old Knives for my week 18 reading challenge.

I highly recommend this book, especially for a weekend jaunt, for several reasons:

1) it's a quick read
2) it's a page turner
3) it's appealing to both males and females
4) those who like spy/espionage novels will enjoy the plot, which makes sense, from start to finish
5) characters who are complex, but relatable

Progress Post:
- Where do you plan on doing most of your reading? Usually my comfy sofa or bed -- or on the NYC subway
- What do summers usually look like for you? Some travel, relaxing, enjoying the warm weather, spending time with family and friends
- Do you typically read different books during the different seasons? Not really. I read everything all year long.

message 19: by Valerie (new)

Valerie | 383 comments I am just starting The Notebook by Nicholas Sparks.

Where do you plan on doing most of your reading?

Mostly, I have been reading in our guestroom/"library" on our daybed. Early in the morning with a cup of coffee on the front porch or back patio, before it gets really hot

- What do summers usually look like for you?

Lately, because we help care for our grandson, a summer day is like any other, as his parents need us to render care then, just as at other times. Mostly he is in pre-school during the day, but we pick him up really early in the morning, take him to school, and then have the rest of the day free. So we do hobbies, play cards, take photos, work in the yard, and read.

- Do you typically read different books during the different seasons?

No I do not. However, since I started doing the challenges and being involved in a book club, I am generally reading more and different types of books than before I got involved in them.

message 20: by Helin (new)

Helin Puksand | 43 comments I read Vee peal by Olavi Ruitlane. This book is good for summer reading. This is the story about fishing.
- Where do you plan on doing most of your reading? I read in my summer house and in the beach in summer.
- What do summers usually look like for you? Summers are full of reading and knitting and swimming.
- Do you typically read different books during the different seasons? I don't read different books during the different seasons. I read books that I like.

message 21: by Elise (new)

Elise F (elise_literaryhabitat) | -7 comments This week's read is The Marriage of Opposites by Alice Hoffman. I picked it off the Huffington summer reads list, but it was already on my TBR

Where do you plan on doing most of your reading?
I read mostly in bed before going to sleep, but also in my lunch hour at work to de-stress. And I usually have a separate audiobook playing in the car for my commute to and from work.

What do summers usually look like for you?

Summers in Australia are HOT! I usually get away to my parents place on the beach, lots of bbqs with friends and family, and trying to stay in air-con as much as possible.

Do you typically read different books during the different seasons?

No, I don't think my reading is seasonal, but if it is post-Christmas I'm probably reading books I've been given as gifts.

message 22: by L (last edited Mar 25, 2016 03:37PM) (new)

L | 127 comments This week I will be reading Go Set a Watchman by Harper Lee - it appeared on the 2015 Summer Reading lists of both The Guardian and Bustle.com.

- Where do you plan on doing most of your reading?
My favourite place to read is in my rocking chair. I try to read an hour in the day if I have time or otherwise after the kids have gone to bed.

- What do summers usually look like for you?
Mainly looking after the kids because school is out!! In the UK you can never tell what summer will look like but with a bit of luck we might have some sunny days.

- Do you typically read different books during the different seasons?
Not really; normally my pattern of book-reading is to try to balance 'heavy' books between lighter reads.

message 23: by Katy (new)

Katy (kittykat21) I'm reading The Lake House by Kate Morton
The Lake House by Kate Morton

- Where do you plan on doing most of your reading?
I do most of my reading in bed before going to sleep. I also like to dip in and out of an ereader throughout the day.
- What do summers usually look like for you?
They are usually mild.
- Do you typically read different books during the different seasons?
Not really, I just read what I feel like.

message 24: by Aglaea (new)

Aglaea | 369 comments I've read (but forgot to update earlier this month!) The Guest Cottage by Nancy Thayer.
The Guest Cottage by Nancy Thayer

- Where do you plan on doing most of your reading?
Summers are local affairs the past years, so I read at home or very seldom on the beach.

- What do summers usually look like for you?
I feel more awake than in the dark winter months, so I do lots of things no matter what they are, when energy levels are up. I joined Å·±¦ÓéÀÖ in 2014 and the past two years have been times when I've picked up more reading for fun again, so I plan to do just that come summer this year.

- Do you typically read different books during the different seasons?
I can't digest very heavy material in the deepest, darkest winter. Last year I had a minor depression, so I tried to be mindful of how I was treating myself this winter. Not too emotional in other words, but often stuff with the aim to lift me up.

message 25: by Kellie (new)

Kellie | 46 comments - This week I have read Eligible: A Modern Retelling of Pride and Prejudice. I am pretty sure it's not on any summer/beach reading lists yet, but I will be surprised if it isn't! It would be on mine, at any rate.

- Where do you plan on doing most of your reading?
Home, unfortunately!

- What do summers usually look like for you?
A mix of work and hanging out with my kids, sometimes with a trip thrown in for a change of scenery.

- Do you typically read different books during the different seasons?
Not really. I read more "work" books during the summer, probably.

message 26: by Sophie (new)

Sophie (sawphie) | 2826 comments - Where do you plan on doing most of your reading?
I read the most on my couch and on my bed before going to sleep, but I'm looking forward to lounge in the garden when it gets warmer.

- What do summers usually look like for you?
I actually like working during the summer, the rythm is slower, lots of people are on holiday. And since we love to travel, that gives us the opportunity of leaving in low season, so it's less crowded and cheaper.

- Do you typically read different books during the different seasons?
Sometimes warm weather and springy/summery feels make me want to pick up lighter books, like it did with The Husband's Secret.

message 27: by Michelle (new)

Michelle (girlvsbook) | 1173 comments What are you reading this week? The Newlyweds by Nell Freudenberger

Where do you plan on doing most of your reading? I've already started this one and I've been doing most of my reading on it before I go to bed each night.

What do summers usually look like for you? Camping, cookouts, and hot pool days with cold beer.

Do you typically read different books during the different seasons? Not usually, but this year I did try to read more romance in February and I'm saving my spookier reads for October and my Christmas reads for December.

The Secret Sister (Fairham Island, #1) by Brenda Novak

- Where do you plan on doing most of your reading?
In the summer I read pretty much the same places I read during the winter. Sometimes outside if the wind, bugs, sun isn't too bad.

- What do summers usually look like for you?
Some camping and 4-wheeling but mostly the same as every other time of year.

- Do you typically read different books during the different seasons? Only at Christmas. I love a good Santa Claus or Scrooge type story, no matter how hoakie it might be. :-)

The Women's Pages, by Debra Adelaide

Where do you plan on doing most of your reading?
On the couch, in bed, on the bus, during lunch breaks at work, on the plane...anywhere I can really!

What do summers usually look like for you?
As I tend to work over summer, it's not really that different to any other time of year. In Australia, it's hot. Longer days, late afternoon walks.

Do you typically read different books during the different seasons?
No, I tend to read whatever I want when I want.

message 31: by Marina H (new)

Marina H | 1312 comments - What are you reading this week?
Sharp Objects by Gillian Flynn

- Where do you plan on doing most of your reading?
I'll be reading this book in the early spring, but during the summer I'll probably be doing most of my reading outside in our garden. It's the first year in our new house, so I'm hoping for some nice weather this summer, since we're spending our holidays at home.

- What do summers usually look like for you?
Well most of the summer I have to work. When we have holidays we sometimes travel, but not every year. When it's nice weather I spend most of my time outside enjoying the sun.

- Do you typically read different books during the different seasons?
In the summer I probably don't read as many door stoppers. They are not always easy to handle when you lie around in the sun.

I usually stay at home, sometimes I go to the coast (Bateman's Bay, Australia) to visit my sister. It's only a couple of hours away. And if my son is on school holidays and we dont go to the beach I'm doing stuff with him.
Do you typically read different books during the different seasons?
No, not really.

Rachel A. (abyssallibrarian) | 3239 comments It's kind of funny to me how much variety there is on beach reading lists. J Austill | 1076 comments ^I agree with you Rachel. I put a much stricter requirement on myself for this prompt than the topic requires.

Yes!!! I was thinking about reading The Selection or maybe Princess Diaries and when I read the lists I thought "WHAT?"

message 36: by Angela (new)

I'm with you (I'n waiting for the 2016 lists to come out to pick the book) however, my IRL book group is classics only and we always pick a really big thick one for over the summer. The thinking is things are busier during the summer so we can't meet every month, so we read the same book over 3 months.

A lot of fishing, swimming in the river, kayaking and bbq's with friends.

Beth | 146 comments - What are you reading this week?
I read Attachments. I actually read it back in February as the BOTM. I planned to keep it as a side read, but I've fallen a bit short in my reading goals lately so I decided to add it here. I found it on a PopSugar summer reading list.

- Where do you plan on doing most of your reading?
I do most of my reading at home on the couch or in bed.

- What do summers usually look like for you?
Summers in Seattle are gorgeous and the days are long. Being outside, maybe hiking, bike riding, or just walking is often on the agenda. And trying to keep the house cool, because no one has central air in this town.

- Do you typically read different books during the different seasons?
Not really, other than an occasional holiday-themed read.

- What do summers usually look like for you?
I live in Florida which is almost perpetual summer. I am retired so summer, winter, spring and fall look the same to me. In the summer there is less traffic though as the snowbirds have all gone north and school session traffic is gone.
- Do you typically read different books during the different seasons?
No, not typically, but the weeks around Halloween and Christmas can be the exception,

I think 'at home in the living room or bedroom' is the most likely place but nowhere is off limits and I like to change it up.

- What do summers usually look like for you?

Taking my daughter to the park (Gene Coulon) or Zoo (Woodland Park) are the most common activities. I definitely get out of the house more.

- Do you typically read different books during the different seasons?

It seems likely that I would; I do have different moods based on the seasons. But I've not investigated this to look for a pattern.

In the Unlikely Event by Judy Blume. I haven't read anything of hers since I was a teenager, so I'm kind of looking forward to it!

Where do you plan on doing most of your reading?
Probably on the couch, or in bed. Although now that the sun has come back out, I might hit the Badi (lakeside 'beachy' things here) and do some reading under a tree.

What do summers usually look like for you?
The Spider and I spend a lot of time at the Badis with friends, or at the park. We try to eat dinner out on the balcony, and just enjoy the sunshine when it's around. The past few years, we've gone on a little holiday somewhere, and this year will be no different. :) I might actually plan a little beach holiday ... I'm Australian, and I can honestly say I haven't had one, ever, in my adult life. I'm surprised they haven't taken away my citizenship.

Do you typically read different books during the different seasons?
Not really. I'll read summery type books all year, but books involving snow and what not tend to only pop up for me during winter.
