Zaz | 2969 comments Welcome!

Maybe some categories for the challenge are not clear enough to you, you can ask explanations for them here. If you need recommendations, go the the "Off topic" folder and create a new topic or join a discussion.

Å·±¦ÓéÀÖ groups are limited in features. You'll find most of what you need on your page:
- author, books and book covers: in the "add book/author" link, on top of your text box;
- how to add spoiler tags or good looking links or pictures: in "some html is ok" link, on top of your text box;
- how to add the cover and Å·±¦ÓéÀÖ page when you create a A-Z topic: enter the name of your book in the special box "about the book" (+ author if difficulties) in the "new topic" link on top of your page;
- for everything regarding Å·±¦ÓéÀÖ, you'll find a FAQ on your main page (bottom);
- if you're on smartphone, lots of features (like "edit") are not in the app but you'll find them on your explorer (Safari, Chrome, IE...).
If you need more help, you can ask here.

Zaz | 2969 comments Recommendation: to access your plan easily, add a link to it in your profile. So you'll just need to click on your profile picture to find it ;)

message 3: by Joy (new)

Joy | 100 comments 1. Is the A-Z folder up yet? I know it's not time to post in it, but I want to make sure I can find it.
2. Can we have a link to a personal folder like there was in the 2015 challenge so that we can track our progress that way? I really enjoyed coming to the group page and seeing my percentage competed right at the top. It was motivating.

Thanks for all of the hard work, mods!

message 4: by Zaz (new)

Zaz | 2969 comments 1. Yes, if you create a new topic, you can see all the A-Z folders in the "select folder" scroll :)

2. Yes, it's available for this group too (if Å·±¦ÓéÀÖ doesn't decide to delete the feature) but it will be opened only on 1st January as it's linked to the challenge dates.

Sorry, I'm still somewhat new, how do I do this?

Zaz | 2969 comments Add this (without the "*") to your profile (edit profile> about me) :
<*a* href=" Plan<*/a*>

Stacey D. | 1908 comments When you have a sec...can we see a list of the topics that didn't make into the challenge from past 2015 surveys?

I can't remember what I voted for...

Thank you!

message 12: by Pam (new)

Pam (bluegrasspam) | 3766 comments WRT the comment about not posting more than 3-4 weeks out, is that for the book topic or the A-Z?

message 13: by Laura, Celestial Sphere Mod (new)

Laura | 3780 comments Mod
What are you referring to when you say book topic?

In general we're asking that everyone not go through and create threads for books far ahead of time. So, say, someone were to create a plan the first week of January and then go through and create the A-Z thread for all the books on the plan. Then if they change the book they plan on reading then the thread would essentially die. Just in the spirit of active discussion, we'd like if people could wait until they're reading the book, or will be soon, to create a new thread.

Does that make sense?

message 14: by Pam (new)

Pam (bluegrasspam) | 3766 comments Thanks Laura! By book topic, I mean the 52 week posts. If you read ahead, do you post in that topic?

message 15: by Zaz (last edited Nov 02, 2015 09:31AM) (new)

Zaz | 2969 comments For the Progress Posts, it's probably better to follow too the 3-4 weeks rule, the group will have more constant activity like this.
Of course, if you read out of order (for example, you're reading the book for week 12) and it's currently "week 6" (for those in order), you can totally post your book in the Week 12 Progress Post.

message 16: by Pam (new)

Pam (bluegrasspam) | 3766 comments Thanks for the clarification!

message 17: by Stacey (new)

Stacey D. | 1908 comments Hi there,

Thinking about changing my selection for 2016 Week #34 - mental illness.

Would a book about addiction qualify here? Think so, but just wanted to check with you all.

Thank you!

message 18: by Laura, Celestial Sphere Mod (new)

Laura | 3780 comments Mod
Yes, that would count :)

message 19: by Kristi (new)

Kristi (kristia) | 18 comments I've never done this before and a going to give it my best try! Is the idea to not have any repeats? Or is it okay to use the same book for some weeks

message 20: by Laura, Celestial Sphere Mod (new)

Laura | 3780 comments Mod
It all depends on how much you can read in the year. It seems like most people do a different book each week but I have seen a few people who fill multiple categories with the same book.

If you feel like you can't, or don't want to, reach the 52 books then feel free to model your plan according to your goals :)

message 21: by Klajdi (new)

Klajdi Zaimi (goodreadscomklajdizaimi) | 22 comments Where does everybody read books? For some reasons I have to read them online, but I still haven't found any site for that.. Can anyone help me with this?

message 22: by Zaz (new)

Zaz | 2969 comments For free ebooks, some are available on Å·±¦ÓéÀÖ (clic the arrow near "explore" on the top and "ebooks"). You can find the classics for free on . There are sales too on some big websites like Amazon where you can have free ebooks. Other ways are usually illegal, so we won't discuss them ;)
Lots of people here use library, second hands books or ebook sales.

message 23: by Laura, Celestial Sphere Mod (new)

Laura | 3780 comments Mod
I use the library 99% of the time. Definitely check out your local library to see if they're partnered with OverDrive. A lot of times you can sign up for a card online and then just start downloading :)

There's the battle of the waitlists when you use the library but I never ran into any major issues with that this year.

Klajdi Zaimi (goodreadscomklajdizaimi) | 22 comments Thanks for the help:)

message 25: by Pia (new)

Pia | 9 comments I don't have access to good public libraries where I live. I'd have to be a student or teacher, so I suscribe to a digital library for less than $10 a month.
That's the only way I can access all the books I want to read. No way I could buy all of them!
I do buy a lot of books, though, mostly books that have just been published and are not available on the digital library.

message 26: by Michelle (new)

Michelle (girlvsbook) | 1173 comments I also use the library for most of my books! If I get a book from the library that I really enjoy, I buy it when I can to support the author.

If you have a Kindle or device that is able to access the Kindle app, Amazon often gives away free Kindle books .

message 27: by Sophie (new)

Sophie (sawphie) | 2826 comments Pia, I also don't have access to a good library and I'm very interested in your digital one, can you give me the name?

You can also subscribe to for everyday deals.

message 29: by Maple (last edited Nov 09, 2015 09:16PM) (new)

Maple (maplerie) | 1025 comments Admittedly, I am a book hoarder. I buy as many books as I can, but I typically only buy second hand from this really amazing local used bookshop here in Anchorage, or through Thriftbooks.com.

I had to sell my library before I moved to Alaska last year, so now I'm trying to build it back up.

message 30: by Michelle (new)

Michelle (girlvsbook) | 1173 comments Well, since we're on the topic, I'm also a big fan of . I also use and for book deals.

message 31: by Maple (new)

Maple (maplerie) | 1025 comments So this is kind of an OT question, but I put together a secondary challenge based on the topic suggestions that did not win.

I'm having troubles find books that are told from a different perspective of another book. Ie: 50 Shades of Grey and Grey (which I will not read either of these ... I tried and gave up; James is an awful writer).

Do you have any suggestions or know of any books that would fit into this category? I will most likely need to read both books, and I am okay with that.

message 32: by Michelle (new)

Michelle (girlvsbook) | 1173 comments Hmm, that's interesting. Are you challenging yourself to read the did not make it suggestions or did you pick and choose to create another challenge?

I'll look and see what I can find for you.

message 33: by Michelle (last edited Nov 09, 2015 11:02PM) (new)

Michelle (girlvsbook) | 1173 comments Ender's Game and Ender's Shadow?

I've heard that the The Painted Man series does this but I cannot confirm because I've not read them. I know the books are all told from different POVs, but I'm not sure if they fully rehash the same story or just some of the events.

EDIT: Also Every Day and Another Day

message 34: by Maple (new)

Maple (maplerie) | 1025 comments Thanks, Emm! I'm reading all of the suggestions that did not win.

There were a lot of really good ones that did not make the final cut, and there are several I was not excited about, but after finding a book for it, I've changed my mind about them. There were several that were really difficult to find books for though, just because they were so specific.

message 35: by Pia (new)

Pia | 9 comments Thanks everybody for the book deal suggestions.

Besides my digital library (it's like kindle unlimited, but I like it better), I get e mails from Book Riots Deals, Book Perk, Audible and Book Bub.

I'll check out all of the links you posted.

Manda, there's also Gone with the Wind with Rhett Butler's People and The Wind Done Gone. I haven't read the parallel stories but Gone with the Wind is one of my favorites.

message 38: by Stacey (new)

Stacey D. | 1908 comments You may also like these companion works Mr. Bridge and Mrs. Bridge by Evan S. Connell, set around WWII, they are considered a "forgotten classic" of American literature.

message 39: by Pia (new)

Pia | 9 comments I've been browsing all the topics in the group, but I'm still not clear as to how the A-Z topics work and how we create them?

message 40: by Zaz (new)

Zaz | 2969 comments A-Z folders are already created, you'll just have to add a new topic for your book in them.
For example, A is there: /topic/group...
They'll show up in December when people will add their books. You can find them when you create a new topic, in the "select folder" scroll :)

message 41: by Michelle (last edited Nov 10, 2015 09:11AM) (new)

Michelle (girlvsbook) | 1173 comments Once books start being added to the A-Z folders, you'll just want to make sure and check if your book is already in there before you create a new topic so we don't have duplicates.

The really great thing about the A-Z folders is that now if members are reading the same books but for different weeks, we'll still all be discussing that book in one area which should lead to stronger discussions overall. I'm very excited about that! :)

message 42: by Pia (new)

Pia | 9 comments I see! I'll just wait until they show up and start adding my books. I'm still working on my list, though. I do 2 other challenges, so I like to fit my books around them.
For one of them I only have to read 24 books, so it will be quite easy to fit them in, but the other one is more complicated.

message 43: by Elizabeth (new)

Elizabeth | -19 comments questions:
8. A classic book with less than 200 pages: would Raggedy Andy Storiescount as a classic and also does it count since its less then 200 pages.

message 44: by Zaz (new)

Zaz | 2969 comments Yes, it can count for week 8, it's a classic (I knew the doll but not what it was related to) and the page number is good :)

message 45: by Elizabeth (new)

Elizabeth | -19 comments Zaz wrote: "Yes, it can count for week 8, it's a classic (I knew the doll but not what it was related to) and the page number is good :)"

thinks ,because that's the only short one under 200 pages I have.

message 46: by Elizabeth (new)

Elizabeth | -19 comments question : 19. A non-fiction book and 28. A biography, autobiography, or memoir
my question is this : the book that I'm thinking of using can go to both of those question. which one would it fit more since its one of my DNT kindle books which is Alcatraz A Definitive History of the Penitentiary Years by Michael Esslinger

message 47: by Michelle (new)

Michelle (girlvsbook) | 1173 comments Personally, I'd probably count that more as a non-fiction book than a memoir or biography. From my understanding, the author is a historian who researched the subject rather than having been someone who worked or resided at the prison sharing his experiences. He's not writing an account of a person's life (or his own life), so I wouldn't call it a biography or autobiography either.

message 48: by Maple (new)

Maple (maplerie) | 1025 comments Thanks for all of the help! You guys had much better luck than I did :)

I settled on Ender's Shadow, primarily because I picked Ender's Game for another topic in those suggestions.

Jody, I'm glad you suggested Wicked. It's one of my all-time favorites. With the exception of Lost, I have loved everything I have read by Maquire. He's a great story teller. Though admittedly, A Lion Among Men was the weakest in the Wicked series (I have yet to read Out of Oz, but it's set for 2016).

Laura, I haven't read Gone With The Wind since grade 6, but play on rereading it now that I'm an adult. I'm very interested in the other two stories once I get through that one again. I had never heard of them, but I'm intrigued that all three books are by different authors. *Curiosity is getting to me :)*

Stacey, I had never heard of these two books. I want to try to slip them in some where this coming year, even if it is just a side piece. Classics are great, and I love the forgotten about ones :)

message 49: by Jody (new)

Jody (jodybell) | 3477 comments I'm reading Wicked for the Book Riot Read Harder challenge this year - it's next on my list after whatever it is that I'm reading now. I saw the show on West End when I was in London in July and loved it! Really looking forward to reading the book now.

Also, mods, I just came across this list, which you might like to add to the suggestion thread for the "book mentioned in another book" week - it's a list of all of the books mentioned in Stephen King's Danse Macabre, and there are over 100 books on it ... wow.

message 50: by Zaz (new)

Zaz | 2969 comments Thanks for the link Jody, I added it in week 9 suggestions :)
