Evan Stacy This book is a very interesting collection of thoughts from Maria Konnikova. The main idea in the story is to investigate and attempt to replicate the intricate thought processes of the world's most renowned fictional detective, Sherlock Holmes. One of the most intriguing points that she makes in the book is analyzing the structure that Sherlock Holmes refers to as the “brain attic.

The brain attic is a theoretical idea that is used as an analogy to describe the way in which our brain works. In the brain attic, the thinker stores common knowledge into the “attic to be pulled out at times when necessary. Our attic can become filled with unnecessary knowledge that can, in terms, be “thrown out. Maria Konnikova focuses on helping one to master the concept of training your brain to prioritize that which you need most, and putting other knowledge towards the unnecessary pile. A quote from the book that emphasizes this point is, After a walk, people become better at solving problems; they persist longer at difficult tasks; and they become more likely to be able to grasp an insightful solution (like being able to connect those four dots you saw earlier). This quote is attempting to preach that even after simply taking a walk, the knowledge that is taken in from your surroundings is being added to that which is already stored in your “brain attic. Now what Sherlock Holmes had mastered, is learning how to point out which information will be the most crucial and fundamental when solving his crimes. Sherlock could notice small things such as muddy shoes, wet concrete and other variations to help piece together the larger puzzle of the mystery he needed to solve. This is an extremely important quality that can truly help distinguish the wise from the unwise.
Of all the things I have learned from reading this book, the most important lesson that I learned was to never judge a book by its cover. This is an old saying that generally refers to saying that the outside appearance of one person does not reflect their inner agenda. This book has taught me that storing information inside your brain attic can allow you to peer inside another person's activities based on their appearance, even if they seem harmlesss. One who might most enjoy this book is a psychologist. Psychology is the study of mental behaviors and is the prime reason that this book was written by Maria Konnikova, a psychologist herself. What I really liked the most about this book was the real life examples she used and that it was enjoyable to read, never leaving you bored. This book keeps you intrigued throughout every page. It is what one would call a “page-turner. I would recommend this book for anyone of the ages 16 and older because it is truly an interesting book that you would not want to miss out on. If you have the time, I would read this book. You will not regret this choice.
