Juanita (juanitav) | 744 comments What's it going to be for a book set in Europe? Will you go fiction or nonfiction?

message 2: by Sara (new)

Sara The Assassination of the Archduke: Sarajevo 1914 and the Romance that Changed the World has been on my reading list for a few years. Though I read ALOT of fiction books set in Europe I might branch out and try a nonfiction for this one.

message 3: by Belinda (new)

Belinda (belindalt) | 99 comments I think I'm going to go with The Girl on The Train for this one.

message 4: by Ashly (last edited Jan 09, 2016 12:46AM) (new)

Ashly (ashlyh) I'm reading Knife Edge by Andy Lane

I read SO MANY books set in Europe, so I'm not quite sure why I looked up more, but I did. So here are a few ideas. I don't think I'm even going to read a special book for this category, I'll just read books I want to read, and one of them will fit. I've got The Cuckoo's Calling audiobook on hold, if I time it right, I'll "read" that in January.

In the Woods (Ireland)
The Chalk Circle Man (France)
Grave Mercy (historical / fantasy YA trilogy set in Breton)
The Peripheral (England)
Neverwhere (England)
The Girl with All the Gifts (England)
The Scarlet Pimpernel

The Cuckoo's Calling
Moonglow
The Night Circus
The Thirteenth Tale
Etiquette & Espionage
Among Others
A Discovery of Witches
The Count of Monte Cristo
Anna Karenina
The Scorpio Races
Anna and the French Kiss
The Circle
The Likeness

message 7: by Sana (new)

Sana Zameer (sanazameer) I am going to start The Raven Prince

message 8: by Sara (new)

Sara Megan, yes Me Before You is set in the UK.

message 9: by Kirsten (new)

Kirsten (kmcripn) Though, if you ask some Britons, they don't want to be part of Europe any more.

message 10: by Arka (new)

Arka Duttagupta | 25 comments Most Of The P.G Wodehouse's Novels are set in England right?
I'm reading Jeeves In The Offing.....

message 11: by Christophe (new)

Christophe Bonnet That prompt was almost too easy (that's the thing with a challenge that's so heavily American-oriented as this one!)... I bought Berlin, Voyage en automne by Paul Louis Rossi while visiting my parents the other day; read most of it on the train back and finished it yesterday.

This is a very good book, not only about Berlin, but about what it means for Europe, as a memory of the 20th Century and otherwise. Also, I'm pretty pleased that I started the 2016 challenge with a non-fiction book; my 2015 challenge was mostly novels, a bit too much so.

Fabiana Acosta (fabi_ad) | 14 comments Harry Potter's book are set in Europe right? Works to this category?

Tara Bates | 1008 comments Yes they are, Hogwarts is somewhere undisclosed but probably in the uk and the non-Hogwarts stuff is England

Sara Tara wrote: "Yes they are, Hogwarts is somewhere undisclosed but probably in the uk and the non-Hogwarts stuff is England"

They hint that Hogwarts is in Scotland though a precise location is never disclosed.

Juanita (juanitav) | 744 comments A Man Called Ove by Fredrik Backman is set in Sweden.

message 18: by Christi (new)

Christi (christibooks) The Lake House by Kate Morton is set in England

This book could also be a book set on an island or murder mystery or NYT best seller.

Martha | 10 comments Kristin wrote: "I'm also reading Harry Potter. I'm also reading Life After Life, both of which take place in England. I'd like to push myself to read a book that takes place elsewhere in Europe, preferably not one..."

I loved that book! I hope you enjoy it. Kate Atkinson is a favorite of mine. I've read everything in her oeuvre by now, so I'm always waiting for new books from her.

message 20: by Juanita (new)

Juanita (juanitav) | 744 comments A Man Called Ove takes place in Sweden too!

message 21: by JoAnna (new)

JoAnna | 84 comments Currently reading "Me Before You" by Jojo Moyes, set in England.

message 24: by Alice (new)

Alice Going to read Flirting in Italian (Flirting in Italian #1) by Lauren Henderson

message 25: by Giulia (new)

Giulia | 44 comments Since the Popsugar challenge is mainly aimed at American readers, do you guys think that readers based in Europe should read a book set in the US (or outside Europe in general)?

message 26: by Anna (new)

Anna (annaholla) Giulia wrote: "Since the Popsugar challenge is mainly aimed at American readers, do you guys think that readers based in Europe should read a book set in the US (or outside Europe in general)?"

I think that's a nice twist on it. Or you could pick a European country you don't usually read about.

message 27: by Kirsten (new)

Kirsten (kmcripn) Just finished reading Jonathan Strange & Mr Norrell by Susanna Clarke Jonathan Strange & Mr Norrell by Susanna Clarke for this prompt. This brings me to 23 out of 41 books read for the Popsugar Challenge! I'm over halfway there!

/review/show...

message 28: by AF (new)

AF (slothlikeaf) | 398 comments Night by Elie Wiesel is a good one.

message 29: by Rachel (new)

Rachel A. (abyssallibrarian) | 643 comments I'm reading Us. I originally had this in mind for the book about a road trip, but I think it fits better here since it covers so many European cities.

message 30: by Patricia (new)

Patricia So far this year I've read 8 books set in Europe. The one I used for this prompt is A Room with a View.

ila | 23 comments Giulia wrote: "Since the Popsugar challenge is mainly aimed at American readers, do you guys think that readers based in Europe should read a book set in the US (or outside Europe in general)?"

That's a fun way of twisting it :D

I chose a historical novel, in wich characters roamed across Europe (Germany, Flanders, Venice and Rome) in a very telling moment of European history, so that was not set in a single country but actually about Europe in a broader sense Q by Luther Blissett

I think that's a great idea!

message 33: by Patricia (new)

Patricia Bergman (marshop) | 112 comments I think I'll read The Little Paris Bookshop by Nina George by Nina George.

message 34: by Wendy (new)

Wendy | 35 comments If you want some light YA, try Anna and the French Kiss.

message 35: by Riley (new)

Riley (rileyfickett) Right now I'm reading a book called The Elephant Keeper by Christopher Nicholson. It's a book sent in 18th century England about this stable boy who is charged with the task of training and caring for two elephants who were stolen from the wild in the Indies and brought to England for purchase. This novel is equal parts heartbreaking and fascinating and I know I'll probably end up crying by the end of it, haha.

The Elephant Keeper by Christopher Nicholson

message 36: by Christi (new)

Christi (christibooks) I read At the Water's Edge which was set mainly in Scotland during World War II.

message 37: by Martha (new)

Martha (marthais) I read The Miniaturist which is set in Amsterdam. I absolutely hated it! However, it has been a bestseller so perhaps take my opinion with a pinch of salt. To be fair, I thought it was incredibly well written, I just didn't like the way it ended - which many people did!

message 38: by Sara (last edited Sep 29, 2016 04:47AM) (new)

Sara (velocipedal) | 32 comments I read Shakespeare's Twelfth Night I had only seen the film with Ben Kingsley before reading.

Amber | 38 comments I read The Eight by Katherine Neville which is partially set in Europe (Paris)
