Hello people, I would like to request that we restrict untagged comments to up to chapter 8 for the first few posts of the thread, please, so that members can post as they go along w/out fear of coming up against spoilers.

Sorry for the bother, but let's tag spoilers that fall more or less after Chapter 8.

Sadly, I'm finding it to be boring and self-indulgent waffling at this stage. Not nearly as good as his short stories. :(

Maybe it's just me...

I loved the bit about the golden threads and the bit about the machine, but then there seems to be a lot of aimless meandering after that.

Aw, bummer. I haven't gotten there yet; I got sucked into a different obsession. Determined to finish this this weekend though.

Okay, looks like the boring bit was luckily only for a short while. After (view spoiler)[ Janice tries to commit suicide (hide spoiler)] things pick up again, even though it's pretty bleak stuff...

Oh, excellent to hear. My determination came to naught, but I am almost finished with my other obsession and hoping to get back into this ASAP. (I'll PM you on the other thing.)

Sure, Amy, I fully understand. I think we all tend to be a bit overoptimistic about the amount of time we have available for our various projects. :)

Finally got some uninterrupted time to read and finished the first part tonight. Not much to say in response; I continue to love these characters and I continue to be driven to distraction by Janice's spiral around the story. I am fascinated with the hints she and Duncan have dropped but I am well ready for more than hints.

(view spoiler)[I found her meeting with her mother after the attempt very poignant. Found Ed heartbreaking. Loved the allusion to the author in the asylum, but the timeframe is all wrong. Really curious to know what JV is doing here. Is he going to leave the events of Patient X from COSAM in place, or account for them somehow? (hide spoiler)]

And can we please get to this Shift thing, already?

Phew, lots of fireworks eventually in this part.

Hmm I'm actually looking for the thread about the first part of part 2, although I want to come back and comment on this thread as well.
