message 103: by Deborah (new)

Deborah Pickstone | 74 comments Hello - I follow Kiwi around exchanging witticisms (as I like to call them) and general bon mots. I have a few challenges up my sleeve also.

I am intending to read less in 2016 so have elected only 300 books for the year. That is, fiction and non-fiction - I also read a lot of crafting and art books and other stuff.

I read a lot of historical fiction but like other stuff too and am not averse to being made to laugh.

Brent | 93 comments Hello, I am Brent. I'm from Montana.

I like reading everything from mysteries and thrillers to literary classics. I've been trying to read a wider variety from all genres and cultures.

I learned about goodreads from google, but joined because a old friend/colleague reviews the books he reads on here. And I've discovered a couple of reading challenges that will broaden my reading list next year.

My goal for next year is to read a book a week next year.

message 113: by Cassandra (new)

Cassandra | 5832 comments Welcome to the group, Brent! I'm glad you've already found some challenges you're excited about. Good luck with your goal. :)

My career goal is to become a librarian. I am planning on starting college in the fall of 2016. Well for now have a great rest of December 2015 and Merry Christmas to all the book worms. Later!!!

I look forward to visiting with everyone here.

message 117: by ❀ Sabina (new)

❀ Sabina (namida2u) Hey! ^^

I'm Sabina and I'm 24 years old. I'm from the Netherlands, where to I will return again on January 7th. At this moment, I'm in Japan for my internship for my University.

I've had a lot of free time this year, which I filled up with reading (next to traveling and eating sushi/sashimi/ramen and other goodies) and I would like to see if I can read another 100+ books next year! This is mostly since I'll need to concentrate on graduating and starting another project. But I'm hopefull that I can read an additional two books a week.

It's a pleasure to meet you all

message 118: by Winter, Group Reads (new)

Winter (winter9) | 4971 comments Welcome both!

message 119: by Cassandra (new)

Cassandra | 5832 comments Welcome Ioana! Good luck with your goal of 52 books. :)

message 120: by Trina (new)

Trina Dubya (trina_dubya) Hello! I'm Trina, I'm almost 42, and I've lived in California all my life. I joined ŷ a year ago after deciding to take PopSugar's 2015 Reading Challenge: 50 categories, 52 books, one year. I am two books from the end of the challenge and am on track to finish in time.

My goal for next year is more modest: I want to read at least 26 books I haven't read before and as many re-reads as I want. (I've missed visiting old friends this year because I didn't want to fall behind.) I've chosen 20 categories, which will leave me free to choose the remaining new-to-me books without feeling pressured to fill a quota.

I've read books from many different genres, but my favorites include science fiction, fantasy, and historical fiction. I like memoirs and am developing a taste for zombie fiction. (Nom nom nom.) I like romance, but I usually prefer it to be part of a bigger story instead of the whole point of the book. I love getting recommendations on what to read, though my to-read list here is already well over 300!

Favorite books include The Night Circus, The Lions of Al-Rassan, Daddy Long-Legs, Feed (from the Newsflesh Trilogy), and Miss Pettigrew Lives for a Day. Favorite authors include P. G. Wodehouse, Tamora Pierce, Robin McKinley, Stephen King, and Oliver Sacks.

I'm delighted to be here!

message 121: by Shaunterria (new)

Shaunterria (ca11i0pe) | 4 comments Howdy! I'm Shaunterria from San Bernardino, California. I love adult and juvenile fiction, graphic novels, science fiction, mysteries (not too gory, though), short stories, historical fiction (from time to time), and narrative non-fiction. I'm really glad to be here, and I look forward to participating in challenges and book discussions. Thank you for having me!

message 122: by Justin (new)

Justin (jbradley86) Hi I'm Justin, Im from Derby, England. I love reading fantasy and recently discovered bernard cornwells historic fiction novels that have completely hooked me on the genre. My fave author is David Gemmell. My target this year was 12 books as before this year i didn't read that much for quite a few years and ive read a lot more so next year im going to aim for 30 hopefully surpass that and read more.

message 123: by Sabina (new)

Sabina Kelly (goodreadscomsjaskelly) | 126 comments Hi there! I'd like to join for 2016.
I live in Virginia, USA. I do most of my "reading" via audio books during my commute, I hope that won't disqualify me!

I am interested in fiction, mystery, thrillers, autobiographies, some YA. Not a fan of sci-fi or dystopia or horror. In 2015, i read 93 books, and i'd like to hit the 100 mark in 2016, but i have quite a few long books on my list, so i'm keeping it to 50+. I'm always open to recommendations!

No disqualification, Sabina! A good chunk of us listen to audiobooks for the challenges. They totally count! Welcome to the group!

Ceira (candyceira) | 167 comments Hi, I'm Ceira and I'm from Germany. I love love love YA Fantasy books, but I also enjoy all sorts of different Genres. Somehow the name of this group appeared somewhere among other groups and I just had to join it :) Next year I want to read more than 30 books which is quite hard for me because I'm unfortunately a very slow and easily distracted reader lol

message 126: by Kristen (new)

Kristen Hi Everyone,
I'm Kristen. I have been a ŷ member for awhile, but haven't been as active as I want to be. I am glad to be a part o this group and hoping to read 50 books in 2016. My favorite genre right now is YA Fantasy I am currently reading The Dreams of Gods and Monsters by Lanai Taylor. My favorite book all time book is Outlander by Diana Gabaldon.

message 127: by [deleted user] (new)

Hello!
My name is Layla and I'm from Brazil. I found this group browsing through goodreads and thought it would be nice to take on the challenges to read more in 2016, since I didn't as much as I would this past year. I don't have a favorite genre, I read whatever book piques my interest, I don't read a lot of nonfiction books though.

message 131: by Yazmin (new)

Yazmin (yazminqc) | 13 comments Hello, I´m Yazmin and I am from Mexico. I love to read! I was looking for some reading challenges for 2016 and I bumped into this group.

At the beginning of 2015 I set my Reading Goal low but as I came close to it I decided to up a little bit, and then again... I've read 43 so far and I expect to do much better next year. I like to read different genres and languages (spanish, english and french), mostly fiction, fantasy, historical, adventure, suspense, thriller, horror, mystery, classics, science fiction, comics, manga, pffff the list is big :D

I tried to do the Popsugar 2015 reading challenge and I think I completed more than 70% of it, so I am planing on giving it a go on the 2016 edition also, and setting my Reading Goal here in ŷ in 43, since I want to do better this 2016.

So hi to everyone in this group and I hope to get to make some new reading buddies ;)

message 133: by Erin (last edited Dec 17, 2015 12:04PM) (new)

Erin | 14 comments Hi, I'm Erin! I'm from NC, USA. I have been on goodreads for a while, and have never really participated in a group before, but it sounds fun! I love using ŷ to discover new books in my favorite genres and even some that I wouldn't normally reach for. My favorite genres are autobiographical humor and historical fiction. Looking forward to keeping up with the group!

message 134: by Bobbi (new)

Bobbi (schadenfreudian) | 628 comments Well hello everyone!

I'm Bobbi and I'm from the United States. I'm new here on ŷ and decided I should hop in with both feet. I've had less time to read in this past year than ever before so when I saw this group while searching, I thought it might be nice to be involved with like-minded book lovers in a low pressure setting.

I read just about everything as long as it's well written though my favorite genres are paranormal romance, suspense/horror, and true crime. I'm most likely to shy away from contemporary romance, self help, and new adult (not all, but some, and not YA).

My goals for 2016 are both to read more books and to read a greater range of authors. Many of my favorite series are coming to an end.

I look forward to getting to know some of you, and I'm always game for a recommendation, giving or receiving. I promise I don't bite (only the characters in my books do that).

:)

message 135: by Cassandra (new)

Cassandra | 5832 comments Welcome to Erin and Bobbi! I hope you find that the group helps you find new books and stay on track with your reading goals. :)

message 136: by Cathi (new)

Cathi (cath_n) Hello-
I'm Cathi and I've been a librarian for 25+ years. I enjoy historical fiction, thrillers, and a wide variety of nonfiction.
I'm also a newly minted Kundalini yoga teacher and Reiki Master, so I read on those topics also.
Nice to meet you!

message 137: by Trenton (new)

Trenton | 9 comments - Where are you from?
Hi, I'm Trenton. I'm from Nashville, TN, USA. I love to read a lot of different kinds of books especially books that make me feel like I learned something. I don't particularly like a lot of fantasy or romance, but I do read them occasionally when I hear a there is a movie coming out based on the book.

I found the group by clicking groups, tags > bookclub and it was the first one, everyone here seemed awesome so I joined because my book club on FB fell apart.

I don't really have a reading goal. I read at least a book a month and sometimes two books a week (depending on how busy I am). My goal is just to join this community so I can keep reading and keep expanding my knowledge and understanding.

message 138: by Amanda (new)

Amanda Abbott | 7 comments Hello! I'm Amanda and I'm from Vancouver, Canada! I'm a first-year college student studying Health Sciences! I'm fairly new to ŷ, and i'm not entirely sure how everything works on here yet! I used to read a lot more than I do now, and I want to change that! I miss reading a lot!
The kind of books I like to read is historical fiction! They are by far my favourite, I started reading them back in elementary school and instantly fell in love!
I can't wait to meet you guys, and to get excited about reading again! My goal for 2016 is going to be 20 books! My long-term goal is to get to at least one book a week in the years to come, but I thought i'd start (sort of) small and work my way up!
I'd also love to start a youtube channel, but i'm too much of a chicken to get into that just yet, so I've started a blog which I'm very excited about! I would also love, love, love to read manuscripts, so if anyone has any ideas about how I would go about doing that I'd love to get your input!

:) Until next time!

message 139: by Winter, Group Reads (new)

Winter (winter9) | 4971 comments Welcome all new members!

message 140: by Annita (new)

Annita (typeo) | 2 comments Hi everyone! I'm Annita, I'm a first year English major from Vancouver, Canada, and I don't know how to gracefully end this sentence.

I like reading (ovi). My favorite things to read are usually depressing stories, classic novels, and, currently, a bit of YA.

I was looking for the official 2016 ŷ reading challange when I stumbled across this group, and I thought the idea was amazing so now I'm sticking around.

I'm pretty bad at inspiring myself to get up and read, but I still managed to finish 21 books this year (so far). So I'm going to try to finish 40 books next year. These have to be books that I'm reading for pleasure, not for classes (pleasure does, however, include book clubs and all that jazz).

Good luck to everyone with your reading goals, and I'm looking forward to getting to know some of you over the course of 2016!

message 141: by Winter, Group Reads (new)

Winter (winter9) | 4971 comments Welcome Annita! I also like depressing stories ;) We have lots of challenges and fun to help you reach your goal. Feel free to ask if you have some questions.

message 142: by Mie (new)

Mie | 2153 comments My name is Mie, I'm from Denmark and thanks to a reading challenge 2015 has been my best book year ever! I have just set my first 2016 challenge - although less challenging than last year, haha... But if things go well, more challenges will hopefully follow throughout the year.

message 143: by Kim (new)

Kim (kimparonish) | 36 comments Hi! My name is Kim and I live in St Louis. Home to me is Altoona, PA and we are trying to move back to PA.
My goal is to read 100 books in 2016. I joined several challenges to help me reach my goal. I don't read science fiction or horror. I am not a huge mystery fan but have enjoyed them.

message 144: by Sarah (new)

Sarah T (seren1980) Hello! I'm Sarah and live in Leeds, in the North of England. I love to read and dip in and out of all sorts of genres. I have a degree in English and after spending three years doing nothing but thinking about and writing about literature I fell out of love with reading for a while but I've really been rediscovering my mojo in recent years and think that getting involved with challenges will inspire me even more! Can't wait to get stuck in to 2016.

message 145: by Kym (new)

Kym Hamer (kymhamer) Hi! I'm Kym, an Australian living in London.

I read pretty much anything apart from horror and factual war stories. My idea of the perfect relaxing holiday is to park myself on a beach in the sun somewhere and read a book a day...bliss!

My aim each year is to read a book a week (so 52 books a year - good maths huh?) which seems to give me enough time to read my magazine subscriptions and write my personal blog, Gidday from the UK as well. Let's face it, I just love words!

Looking forward to sharing the next year of reading with you all.

message 146: by Sabina (new)

Sabina Kelly (goodreadscomsjaskelly) | 126 comments Hi everyone! I'm Sabina and I live in Virginia, US.

I mostly read fiction, with some biographies, and an occasional non fiction for variety. I do most of my reading via audio books on my commute. My goal for 2016 is 50+ books. In 2015, i read 94 books, so if i get anywhere close to that i will be happy .

message 147: by Cassandra (new)

Cassandra | 5832 comments Welcome to the group, everyone! We're glad to have you with us. :)

message 148: by GailW (new)

GailW (abbygg) | 970 comments Hello! I have already joined a number of the challenges but realized I never introduced myself. My name is Gail. I am originally from North Central PA, currently living near Pittsburgh. (only PA'ers really understand that PA is so long, and has such different characteristics from east to west...) I have been an avid reader since forever! Growing up, the library was my second home. I am a historical fiction and mystery fan - but I did stretch myself this year doing both the Ultimate Challenge and the Book Riot challenge. Read a number of different books that were definitely not in my TBR, but which I thoroughly enjoyed. (I also think I became just a bit obsessed with it all...) Joined this group because I loved the idea of having one location for all my challenges and because it seems so friendly and diverse.

message 149: by Trenton (new)
