Famine (wolfcreed) Okay! Looking forward to you joining :D

Marc-Antoine | 2888 comments I'm in!

Famine (wolfcreed) Added! Welcome!

Holly (goldikova) I'm going to order my book tomorrow and hope it ships fast.

Holly (goldikova) Got it, ready when you are.

Cathie (cathiebp2) | 220 comments I hadn't realized there was a buddy read! I have the book from loan - will try to do this buddy read, but having a bit of trouble getting into it. Could it be just the dialogue?

The 1 chapter a day sounds like a good idea, so I believe i can commit!

Famine (wolfcreed) So what date do you all agree on we begin?

Holly (goldikova) Wolfrott wrote: "So what date do you all agree on we begin?"

I'm flexible; whatever works for everyone else is fine with me.

I really would like to join in but that e-book is just too much and I can't find it in any libraries near me.

Okay by me...will check this post for updates...

Famine (wolfcreed) You're welcome!

Famine (wolfcreed) It begins tomorrow on the 1st! This week has been busy so I moved the date from the 29th to the 1st.

I update my first post with our progress every day so keep yourself updated please, and remember one chapter a day :)

Cathie (cathiebp2) | 220 comments Hi, I'll be on vacation overseas beginning the 2nd. May not post until I return the week after.

Famine (wolfcreed) Poor Stephanie :( Not a good start to her life.

Knacker seems so sleazy. Seems like a red herring though.

Anybody read Nevill's other books? I've now noticed a pattern in which he favors downontheirluck runaway heroines.

Marc-Antoine | 2888 comments Only read The Ritual as well, but I get what you are saying. I'm really enjoying the beginning of this novel, the set up is very creepy...

Holly (goldikova) I do see a similarity between Stephanie and the main chairacters in Apartment 16 and House of Small Shadows.

Famine (wolfcreed) How come Stephanie doesn't rent a B&B, if they're cheap enough for her salary? :( Silly girl.

Marc-Antoine | 2888 comments I keep wondering why she just doesn't get the hell out of there?!?

Holly (goldikova) Knacker is obviously a scary guy. Does everyone know what a knacker is?

Back in the old days the "knacker" man would drive around and pick up dead or dying livestock for making glue, leather, etc. The current term is "rendering company" which is still around in rural areas with farm animals.

Where are the other tenants in the house? Stephanie has yet to meet one.

this is sounding so interesting! maybe I can borrow one of your all's book once some one is done?

Yeah, I know what a knacker is :D

I dunno, sounds a bit on the nose for me. I think he's a red herring baddie.

Maybe the tenants are at work? I can't remember, does Stephanie always leave the house at the same time?

Marc-Antoine | 2888 comments Thanks Holly, I wasn't familiar with the term.

Sorry Latasha, I'm listening to this one on audible....

Holly (goldikova) Yeah, I worked at a racetrack for many years, and one year we had a groom in our barn who used to threaten the horses by saying, "The knacker man is going to come for you if you don't win." It is amazing he never ended up in the hospital with massive pitchfork wounds; I was really tempted.

Good one! Horses don't want to go to the glue factory.

Famine (wolfcreed) At £40, Stephanie can easily afford a cheap B&E! Some go for £15. Incredibly silly girl.

Knacker sounds justified. He did show her the estate, didn't actually lie or sugarcoat his lodgings, so she has no excuse to play the victim.

Famine (wolfcreed) Nothing happened in this last chapter; I hope it picks up again!

I also hope the twist isn't just ghosts trapped in the house, unable to leave.

Marc-Antoine | 2888 comments Wolfrott, I'm enjoying this one, although I want to scream at her for not just getting the hell out of there. I think I'm a little further along and yes it picks up.

What are you up to? We're meant to be on chapter 10.

Marc-Antoine | 2888 comments I've got his on audio book, trying to keep pace, but think I'm just a tad further ahead.

How is the audiobook? :)

Marc-Antoine | 2888 comments It's very good, I'm enjoying it so much that I went out and bought a physical copy of the book, I plan on reading later on.

Holly (goldikova) It is difficult to see Stephanie struggle in this situation. Knacker needs a good ass kicking by a strong matriarchal figure.....

Famine (wolfcreed) I hope Stephanie grows a pair soon and does something about her situation. Not looking forward to her spending the rest of her boarding, moaning about it. Knacker gave her permission to leave, and she has her ex =/

I hope so too, but I'm afraid that Stephanie is a classic prototypical victim; she certainly seems to be letting herself sink deeper into a situation that another girl would be highly suspicious of and sensibly leave.

Knacker is way very transparently untrustworthy and full of bad intentions. Why she has not gone to some authority yet (police, housing/zoning, etc.) is beyond me. If I were dealing with a landlord like him I would be on the phone to Code Enforcement so fast his head would spin.

Famine (wolfcreed) I have to drop out, due to chronic migraines and flareups.

Enjoy your buddy read.
