Christina Stind Although the suggestions are so far really good, I would like to add one:
Un Lun Dun by China Miéville.

From the books cover:
"Stumbling through a secret entrance, anna and Deeba enter the strange wonderland of UnLondon. Here all the lost and broken things of London end up, and some of its people too - including Brokkenbroll, boss of the broken umbrellas, and Hemi the half-ghost boy.
But the two girls have arrived at a dangerous time. UnLondon is a place where words are alive, where a jungle lurks behind the door of an ordinary house, where carnivorous giraffes stalk the streets ... and a sinister glouc called Smog is bent on destruction. It's a frightened city in need of a hero ..."

I imagine Alice in Wonderland meets Neil Gaimann meets The Raw Shark Texts meets Jumanji. Or something like that ...
This is a YA novel so it should be an easy read :-)
