No. I didn't suggest any topics because I wasn't in the challenge last year. This is a book I'm reading for my IRL book club and this is where it fit in the reading challenge.

4: Pick ONE other topic that you wish made the cut this year that didn't.
A book you bought or will buy from an independent bookstore or from a charity shop. I'd pick this topic because it would give me an excuse to go buy more books at my local bookstore.

2: What "reject suggestion" did you choose to help you select your book?
A book with an elderly person as a main character. It's not the kind of book I would normally reach for, but I've heard really good things about this one.

3: Did you suggest this topic originally, or did it just happen to fit a book you REALLY want to read right now?
I didn't suggest any topics since I only discovered this group after the list was already compiled. But this topic did fit a book that I really wanted to read.

4: Pick ONE other topic that you wish made the cut this year that didn't.
Well, I've ended up incorporating three into my challenge:
- A book with an elderly person as a main character, for this prompt
- A book published in a significant year for you, to replace "Reader's Choice"
- A book with a long title (8-10 words or more), as a Wild Card in addition to all other prompts, instead of replacing one

If I had to pick something in addition to those, I'd probably say "a book you judged too quickly." I think it would be really interesting to see if the book really was as good/bad as we thought.

A book based on an ancient epic

message 18: by Susan (last edited Apr 06, 2016 01:16PM) (new)

Susan Right now, I am reading Serowe, Village of the Rain Wind by Bessie Head.

I chose to read something for a book published the year I was born. I did not suggest this topic; however, it fit in with another challenge for another group.

I just noticed the children's "choose your own adventure" book. I used to love those, and if I had seen it earlier, I might have picked it.

message 19: by Emily (new)

Emily (emilyesears) | 412 comments 1: What are you reading this week?

I read The Private Diary of Mr. Darcy for this prompt.

2: What "reject suggestion" did you choose to help you select your book?

I chose "A book with 'diary' in the title" as my rejected suggestion.

3: Did you suggest this topic originally, or did it just happen to fit a book you REALLY want to read right now?

I admit it--I had a different rejected suggestion picked out for this week, but since I read this book and it had the word Diary in it, I figured I'd use it.

4: Pick ONE other topic that you wish made the cut this year that didn't.

I would have liked to do "A book you bought or will buy from an independent bookstore or from a charity shop," just because I love supporting places with cheap books!

4: Pick ONE other topic that you wish made the cut this year that didn't
Oh I don't know. I am super happy with the ones that were chosen so to pick one to add, I'd have to take one away. I'm not sure that I want to do that! :-)

I really laughed while reading this book - hilarious

message 28: by Alexis (new)

Alexis (TheSlothReader) This week I read Glass Sword by Victoria Aveyard. The rejected topic I chose was "a book where a main character has a special power". This just happened to fit this book really well and I'd been dying to read it since it came out. I think the "read a book published the year you were born" is a really neat idea.

What "reject suggestion" did you choose to help you select your book?
A book with a "taboo" subject.

Did you suggest this topic originally, or did it just happen to fit a book you REALLY want to read right now?
Both. I suggested the topic because I had this book in mind when I made the suggestion, and decided to stick with this as my topic for this week because I already had a book picked out.

Pick ONE other topic that you wish made the cut this year that didn't.
I really loved a great majority of the topics. I felt comfortable enough with all of the topics that I choose to do the Topic Discard Challenge this year, even reading for the topics I didn't care the most for.

If I could only pick one other topic though, it would have to be "from a genre you don't normally read", because I do like to challenge myself.

2: What "reject suggestion" did you choose to help you select your book?

A book with a number in the title

3: Did you suggest this topic originally, or did it just happen to fit a book you REALLY want to read right now?

Catch-22 was one of the books (along with The Color Purple and The Shining) which I intended to read in 2016 prior to making my list and was simply looking for a topic in which to fit it in. So that very first time that I clicked the link for discarded topics -> boom: top of the list, number in title, decision made.

4: Pick ONE other topic that you wish made the cut this year that didn't.

Oh what? I need to read the rest of the list. Hmm.

I'm going to go with: A book you started but never finished. I've put a couple of those into my list this year but I always feel bad about not finishing a book and wouldn't mind a reason to go back and rectify another.
