Josh (agentkd637) Firstly, I am a skeptic and quite frankly do not believe that we have even been visited by aliens before. While I enjoy researching the topic casually, ultimately I much prefer watching alien-related films, particularly in the found footage genre. X-Files, Skinwalker Ranch, V/H/S, The Fourth Kind, etc.

I like suspending my rationalism :)

I was wondering if anyone could recommend some fiction (important) in line with this? No non-fiction accounts or pseudo-autobiographical accounts such as that of Strieber. Thanks!

Amanda M. Lyons (amandamlyons) Strieber actually wrote one of the only alien encounter (horror fiction) books that ever got to me. The Forbidden Zone by Whitley Strieber

Don't worry it's straight horror no 'believe in this it happened to me!' here

Communion was also the first thought that came to my mind before I read the part with "No non-fiction". Isn't The Forbidden Zone a Lovecraft pastiche, too?

I wonder if Howard Philips Lovecraft himself could be mentioned here once again as a pioneer? I'm thinking of The Shadow Out of Time here. In modern terms, the story can be described as that of a prolonged alien contact/abduction experience. The Whisperer in Darkness: Collected Stories Volume 1 somehow seems to qualify as well, since it features fungoid crustacean aliens that abduct human brains.

Josh (agentkd637) Hi, thx - I forgot to mention that I've read almost all of Lovecraft's short stories already :)

Shaun Horton | 324 comments Have you read The Harvest by Scott Nicholson The Harvest by Scott Nicholson?

I could also suggest my own book Class 5 by Shaun Horton Class 5, although it's not so much like the "found footage" type of story that you might be looking for.

Unfortunately, a quick search for "Alien Horror" brought up a mix of non-fiction and Alien erotica.....soo......Yeah. Doesn't seem like there's much out there.

Amanda M. Lyons (amandamlyons) There's also the book The Thing came from:

I guess Josh is looking for horror that features aliens that are not mere animalistic, instinct driven monsters, but intelligent, sentient entities?

Dead Sea by Tim Curran features mainly alien creatures of the first category. (view spoiler)

message 8: by J. (new)

J. Gowin Most of the books in the abduction genre are personal accounts. While I have doubts that aliens would travel between the stars in order to practice colonoscopies without a license, I will admit to there being some strange doings afoot.

That said, I would recomend The Alien Invasion Survival Handbook: A Defense Manual for the Coming Extraterrestrial Apocalypse. It isn't specifically horror, but it does cover the area in question. Thanks to this book, I've commited the lyrics to "Voodoo Child" to memory.

Dreamcatcher by Stephen King

The chances are high that most people have already read Stephen King's Dreamcatcher, but the depiction of the aliens is directly inspired by the popular ufo abduction lore.

Infected by Scott Sigler was fantastic. Definitely alien horror in my opinion.

message 11: by Josh (new)

Josh (agentkd637) Thanks for the recommendations so far, any others? :)

message 12: by Amanda (new)

Amanda M. Lyons (amandamlyons) I had forgotten to mention these two.
The Taking by Dean Koontz Phantoms by Dean Koontz

Eric Compton (goodreadscomdenimandletters) | 54 comments Josh, alien horror is a favorite sub-genre of mine. You could try any of these for a decent "alien invasion scare":

Dean Koontz - The Taking
Tim Curran - Blackout
Greg Gifune - Lords of Twilight
Stephen King - The Tommyknockers
Mark Lukens - Sightings

If you like X-Files there are a number of good novels based on the show...most notably the ones by Kevin Anderson.

message 14: by Amanda (new)

Amanda M. Lyons (amandamlyons) Argh why did I not think of Tommyknockers.

message 15: by Amanda (new)

Amanda | 71 comments You could also try Stinger Robert McCammon. Really good fun! I love this sub genre and wish there were
more books in it. Hopefully suggestions will keep coming!

Famine (wolfcreed) My only recs are:
Who Goes There? by John W. Campbell Jr. (The Thing)
The Tommyknockers by Stephen King

But they've already been mentioned :)

I'd also recommend the novelization of the Carpenter remake:

The Thing by Alan Dean Foster

Shaun Horton | 324 comments Good Grief. The novella that became The Thing is listed at just 75 pages on Kindle for $5.99? Ugh...

Kenneth McKinley | 1684 comments Mod
Love Blackout, Tommyknockers, and Lords of Twilight. Other ones that are good are The Border The Border by Robert McCammon by Robert McCammon and Whom the Gods Would Destroy Whom the Gods Would Destroy by Brian Hodge by Brian Hodge.
