There have been several recent requests (in this group and elsewhere) for clarification of policies about series numbering, particularly as relates to novellas, short stories, anthologies, and other non-primary series elements.

After much discussion, we have added this section to the Librarian Manual: Series Numbering and Order. It is a subsection of the larger Manual section on series.

But what if the whole series consists of novellas? I believe in that case whole numbers are used?

Z-squared | 8576 comments lethe, that's covered in the fourth paragraph down on the first page rivka linked to. :)

the page also linked to jd robb's in death series as an example of proper novella/omnibus numbering. several of the short story omnibuses listed on that page are titled like "Blah (Includes In Death, #X)", e.g., /book/show/1.... Is that considered OK series nomenclature now?

Ugh, I thought I fixed all of those. Not, it's not.

Edit: Actually, I did fix them -- on the numbering of the series page. What remains like that is within the individual books' title fields. And I think that's ok.

Reeeeeally? That's new. Can that be added to the manual, too? I've been routinely deleting things like that out of title fields for years.

Meg We can definitely add this in - will let you know when we do.

David Raz (davidraz) | 11399 comments Assuming this comment represents policy, how about adding it? Something like:

"Short stories or excerpts from books in a series should be listed using capital English letters. So, for example, short stories or excerpt from book 3 should be listed as 3A, 3B, 3C. Such short stories or excerpts should be placed at the end of the series, before anthologies and omnibuses."

message 10: by Empress (new)

Empress (the_empress) Please place anthologies and omnibus volumes/collections after all primary works, not mixed in with them.

It makes me way too happy to see this in the manual. :)

Kars | 4 comments The “tooltip which is shown when editing a book title still shows the old convention for series (a comma between series name and number).

This at least got me to not use the current convention of not having a comma initially.

message 12: by Sandra (new)

Sandra | 30951 comments As far as I'm aware the comma is optional, so its neither right nor wrong.

Both with and without the comma are fine.

- /series/8464...
- /series/7151...
- some other one?

For the first series the original books were split into 2 parts for French translation, so it was not possible to combine French books with original editions.
This will not be the case for most of the series, so the second approach is a standard.

Thanks!
