Suzanne | 2453 comments So excited to be playing with all of you! I've been totally haunting this thread and waiting anxiously for March. I reserved a couple of the starting posts too for future use. I'm looking forward to meeting everyone. Oh, and if you wouldn't mind linking your team shelf, I'll gather those all up in my first post.

message 10: by Kelsi (new)

Kelsi | 210 comments Hello all! I am looking forward to getting started! I haven't played UNO before but I am sure I will catch on quickly :)

Here is my shelf.

message 11: by Suzanne (new)

Suzanne | 2453 comments Kelsi, I'm so glad we ended up on the same team! I was just glancing through cards - it looks overwhelming at first, but I think things are flexible enough we have TONS of choices about what to read and things will fit somewhere. 7 might be our hardest because it needs things starting with "V", but we only need to come up with 5 of those the first month. :)

I'm avoiding grading math homework by counting UNO cards :) I'm sure my students will understand!

Daphne (daphnesm) | 221 comments Greets team!

I've been waiting just as anxiously as you Suzanne. :)

Here is mine Uno2016

message 13: by Daphne (new)

Daphne (daphnesm) | 221 comments Soooo, I've been super bored, and really looking forward to this challenge. My way of coping was to start my own spreadsheet with series books I'd like to consider reading once Uno starts. I've been catching up with lots of BBC audio dramas and Torchwood/Dr. Who audio plays in February. I've finished the Seasonal Reading Challenge for Winter, and now I'm waiting for March to start for Uno and the next SRC to start. :)

Suzanne | 2453 comments I'm glad I'm not the only one! My goodness - I need therapy - except...how could I explain this to a therapist!?

If anyone has ideas about tracking, let me know. Karen just sent me a copy of the tracking spreadsheet she is using for her team - she said it worked really well last year. We can use to record the several catagories books fit into - so that if we need to move things in the main spreadsheet around, it shouldn't be too bad. I'll put a link to it with the team shelves. I'm not sure exactly how the spreadsheet sharing works - I am pretty sure you can all see it - not sure who besides me at the moment can edit it. But I'll try to figure that out .

message 15: by Suzanne (new)

Suzanne | 2453 comments If you have books you are planning on reading for March that you want me to add to the spreadsheet, just let me know. Then once they are read, we can add date read and hand number.

But if you don't want to plan that far ahead, that is fine too!

Here is my spreadsheet that I'm adding my potential books to. None of them are set in stone, but it will help me decide what I should grab for our open cards. I'm a quick reader and have tons of time to listen to audiobooks. I'm also pretty flexible when it comes to my reading, so I should be able to fill most cards that others don't claim. :)

Suzanne | 2453 comments That's awesome Daphne! That'll be such a big help. Audiobooks are great - be sure to recommend your favorites :)

*waves frantically at Laila*

So happy to see be teamed up with you again! We are both trying our hand at co-captaining this game. I think we'll do swimmingly with Suzanne at the helm.

I've been building up my go to shelves to have a nice selection of books available for me to pick from once we start. I've probably gone a bit crazy with my spreadsheet, but it's like a mini-game for me I suppose.

So, hypothetically, I could cover ALL of our 5 V/#7 books if needed. I've got 19 books atm that I'm keen to read that will work. I've got 16 books for sure that will work for our letter E/8th too. A quick look at Suzanne's shelf gave me at least 6 books that she's already read and are on my TBR pile (most are the Mistborn series that I've been meaning to pick up anyway). I'm actually in the middle of the Graphic Audio version of the first Mistborn book, and digging it while I drive around to my stores at night. It's super atmospheric listening to it while surrounded by fog and all by myself on the roads.

I'm more than happy to be the person that works around everyone else's reading to finish our decks. My library and access to books is rather large, and I love being pushed out of comfort zones with genres and subjects. That's why I dig challenges so much. :)

message 26: by Suzanne (new)

Suzanne | 2453 comments Oh very cool that you three have teamed together as well! I will definitely miss Cathy - but yeah - thank goodness for other challenges! And Laila when I saw your name on the team list I thought "yay! I know her!"

No patience required with co-captaining, etc. since...it's a game - it's supposed to be fun, and I'm sure we'll all have lots to figure out as we go along.

Laila and Daphne, if you get a chance, can you check if you can edit the book tracking spreadsheet? It is . And really, that spreadsheet is for anyone on the team who feels like using it, so ....speak up if you do!

I'm pretty good at putting things into spreadsheets and I'm happy to do it because it's kind of fun. But I'm pretty new at the sharing part, and for sure it'd be good if you have the ability to fiddle. :) Oh and notice on row 109, it tracks how many books we need/have for each task in March.

One thing I found out is that if we need to move around books in our March hands, that is fine until the end of March - then after that, they are set and we get whatever points we have, along with our new April hands. You might have already known that, but...it made me happy, because it means we can put books where we think will work best, but also move them.

I can't edit the Wizard books sheet. I do have access to our official one though. :)

I'm so glad we have you leading us Suzanne. It's going to be great having someone who knows the rules and the little stuff that can be missed inadvertently.

I'm thinking of visiting some of the Oz books for the challenge. I've read several, but it seems fitting given our team.

Has anyone else read any books in the Oz series?

message 28: by Suzanne (new)

Suzanne | 2453 comments Good to know about the official one - it is the most important!

I'll ask Karen about the Wizard books sheet - I think she is the "owner". But worst case, I'll just keep it updated and as long as you can see it you can put books in the official hands.

GREAT idea about reading the Oz series. I read most of them when I was a kid, and I've read several as an adult. They are definitely written for children, but the ideas in them are SO imaginative, which makes them fun. I think I bought the complete collection when I first got my Kindle - well it was either really cheap or free - so I may join you in that.

message 29: by Laila Jane (new)

Laila Jane (axlilxlala) | 541 comments Just checked - I don't have access to either the Wizard books sheet or the Official team one. I've only just started using spreadsheets this year (because of challenges!), and while I've got the basics down (I think), I'm not sure how to do the sharing part. I agree with Daphne, we're so lucky to have you leading us Suzanne.

Also, when it comes to reading I don't really plan ahead more than a week or two. I usually just see what criteria I need to meet for all the various challenges I do and go from there. Last year when I did this challenge, I checked to see what tasks still needed to be done and picked from there so I don't mind doing that this year as well.

Daphne - I've never read any of the Oz books. I have read Wicked: The Life and Times of the Wicked Witch of the West, which completely altered the way I see the whole story now.

message 30: by Laila Jane (new)

Laila Jane (axlilxlala) | 541 comments Suzanne, I just sent you a request to be able to edit the Wizard books sheet. That might help?

message 31: by Suzanne (new)

Suzanne | 2453 comments Good idea - I bet it will. It'll either go to me, or it may go to Karen since she originally created it. I just sent her a message asking about opening it up for editing and so I'm sure we will get it all set.

Daphne - I LOVE that you've done that with your spreadsheet! And thanks for being so flexible - it's fantastic you have books that will work for everything - phew! A little bit crazy? No way =) I agree - its like a mini-game :) I like the way you think!

message 32: by Suzanne (new)

Suzanne | 2453 comments My husband says you sound like my long-lost twin =)

message 33: by Suzanne (new)

Suzanne | 2453 comments Laila I think that is a great strategy too - picking books to read as-needed! That will fit in well.

And I know from being on a team with Kelsi that she is super helpful with all of the reading goals.

I'm excited to meet Caitlyn, Denise, and Victoria.

message 34: by Victoria (last edited Feb 12, 2016 08:22AM) (new)

Victoria | 387 comments Wow, I didn't expect there to be 34 new posts before I even said hi.

Anyway, I'm really excited for this challenge! Thank you again Laila for suggesting it and I'm really happy I ended up on the same team as you and Daphne!

I have a few books in mind that I want to read, but I have a tendency to grab books at random with what fits my current mood. I do think I will read The Wonderful Wizard of Oz. I bought the book years ago and never got around to reading it, but I'm rather motivated to read it given our team name. I have read Wicked: The Life and Times of the Wicked Witch of the West (and seen the musical three times) and Son of a Witch, which, like Laila, altered the way I see the story.

message 35: by Victoria (new)

Victoria | 387 comments I almost forgot to add my shelf. Here it is: Victoria's Shelf

message 36: by Suzanne (new)

Suzanne | 2453 comments Hi Victoria - it is good to meet you. That is cool the three of you ended up on the same team!

I like the mood method of reading books - I'm kind of a mix - I make a list...but then choose based on my mood (and not always from the list).

That said, Daphne - I took a look at your spreadsheet - it's beautiful! You truly can cover any holes.

message 37: by Daphne (last edited Feb 12, 2016 09:41AM) (new)

Daphne (daphnesm) | 221 comments Hello again Victoria! Looks like we are just waiting on Denise and Caitlyn to check in, and we can officially all be registered for one jaunt down the yellow brick road...

...wow - that was quite corny. ;)

message 38: by Daphne (new)

Daphne (daphnesm) | 221 comments If my calculations are correct (and they may not be), we need to read 81 books as a team to complete all cards in March.

13 decks with 7 cards each = 91

Subtract 5 for the five Draw 2 cards = 86

5 books can be used for double goals with Draw 2 = 81

Is that the correct way to figure it Suzanne?

I did a quick look at the Oz books on arbookfinder and they all have 35k-50k words, so they can be used for the challenge if any of us decide to read them. :)

message 40: by Suzanne (new)

Suzanne | 2453 comments That's perfect math! Thanks for figuring it out!

I won't be surprised if by the end of the day I have a calendar crossing off days 'til we can start :)

I'll send a PM to Denise and Caitlyn to be sure they know that the yellow brick road exists :)

message 41: by Suzanne (new)

Suzanne | 2453 comments Oh good - thanks for checking on those. I'm really glad they will work for the challenge - I think I need to read at least one!

message 42: by Kelsi (new)

Kelsi | 210 comments Reading the Oz books is a great idea! I think I will join you guys!

I haven't planned my books yet, I haven't read much this year and have gotten behind in my challenges so will probably have to find some things that overlap. I have tons of series on the go though so it shouldn't be too hard to find series books.

Daphne I requested access to your spreadsheet, I am curious to see what you have planned!

Cathy, it sucks you aren't on our team. Hope you enjoy the game anyways! Thanks for coming to say hi :)

message 43: by Laila Jane (new)

Laila Jane (axlilxlala) | 541 comments Reading the Oz books together will work for the Reverse cards. Although, I think I might have to pass on joining you guys. I don't have too much interest in reading the books

message 44: by Daphne (new)

Daphne (daphnesm) | 221 comments If anyone has KU, you can get the ebook for free and then the audio book recorded by Anne Hathaway is only 99cents on audible.

The rest are also very inexpensive or free, and the audiobooks are also very inexpensive (free if you use librivox)

message 45: by Suzanne (last edited Feb 12, 2016 02:09PM) (new)

Suzanne | 2453 comments I learned (thanks again to Karen) how to make the tracking spreadsheet editable. If any of you would like to edit it, just send me a PM with your email address. If you don't care about editing it, its viewable to everyone.

Good point - the Oz books would definitely work for the reverse cards. I have the feeling those will be easy because we have a lot of previously read books in our arsenal.

message 46: by Suzanne (new)

Suzanne | 2453 comments I just made the tracking worksheet so anyone can edit it. Feel free to put in any books you'd like to read in March. But don't feel obligated to use it - it's an optional tool. If you don't want to use it, I will put your shelf books in there (probably just as you finish them) and keep it updated.

Also, if you put a book in there and decide not to read it - no big deal! Just delete it - there's no contract :)

message 47: by Kelsi (new)

Kelsi | 210 comments I added my planned books to the spreadsheet. I might get to some of them this month but I will delete them if I do :)

message 48: by Suzanne (last edited Feb 12, 2016 06:58PM) (new)

Suzanne | 2453 comments Thanks Kelsi! That's perfect! AND you tested that it's really shareable/editable - phew.

Edit: I just looked at your books - thought about how many of them I'd like to read too, and put my name in the Reverse column for the 3 I've read - hope that's ok.

Sounds good! I will be sure to save those ones for next month, just in case we really need the reverse cards (I don't think we will have too much trouble with that one, but just to be sure!)

message 50: by Daphne (new)

Daphne (daphnesm) | 221 comments The first 30 tasks for the Seasonal Reading Challenge was just posted. Now I get to play the game of seeing what books work for both. I suppose I have a couple weeks to start figuring it out. I can't wait for March 1st!

I'm going to avoid putting stuff on our Wizards of Oz spreadsheet and just use my own. I have the highest book read count, so I think it will work best for others to use, and I figure out what we are still going to need and read around that.

Very happy that we seem to be a chatty crew. It gets lonely when not many in the group seem to enjoy chatting.

What is everyone's favorite genres btw? Any serious series readers?

My favorite genres are non-fiction and fantasy. I also enjoy a good magical realism because they seem to be some of the most lyrical books that can evoke deep reactions and emotions. One of my favorite writes from that genre is Angela Carter. She can turn a mad phrase.

I've been getting into more series the last couple years. I'm slowly but surely trying to collect as many of the Forgotten Realms books in audio that I can. I really enjoy that world, and the Drizzt series were some of the first books that introduced me the fantasy world. I have a very soft spot for the special Dark Elf snowflake.
