Have you thought about what will happen to your books when you are gone? I don't have kids or pets to be concerned about, but from time to time I do wonder what will happen to my library when I'm gone. Do you have plans of some sort? Do you have anything in your will to designate certain titles to certain people, for example? Thanks in advance for sharing.

I suspect a lot of my books will go to my children, as they both have developed a love for reading. However, I do have a clause in my will that anything my children do not want will be donated. Clothes and furniture and such will go to Goodwill or DI, books will be donated to the local library.

Unfortunately, thanks to my kids, a lot of my books are not in the condition they once were. But in 5 years they will both be off on their own *hopefully!* and I can start rebuilding my collection!

My parents' neighbour - a woman in her 80s - became ill and was moved into a home by her son - she had a huge library (she was an English teacher and Folio subscriber for over 20 years) and her son just left all the contents of the house to the new owners (paintings, books, china, furniture).
I had my parents ask the new owners if I could have a look through any books they wanted to throw out - fortunately they also read, so they've kept most of her books, but I got a large pile of poetry collections, Nancy Mitford books and short stories that they didn't want.

I expect to live for a good many years still (fingers crossed:-), but I already have some rare/valuable books. My kids are only 7 & 9 so it's a bit early to tell if they'll become readers as adults, but if they don't I'd probably designate parts of my library to someone who'll appreciate it :-)

I actually have thought about this. I suspect most will be tossed :( My son wouldn't care about them. My best friend would probably get some

I have a huge library. As a stroke survivor, I have thought about this issue. I have considered donating or giving away many of them but it really is emotionally wrenching to even contemplate not having books all around my house.

I feel so bad for those who have to go into permanent nursing homes and leave possessions behind as well

I've thought about this in the past too -- my theatre books and plays will be donated to the community theatre's library, for sure. My cousin, sister, and best friends will likely get their pick. I have no kids nor any plans for them, so that's out. Usually when someone passes in my family the whole family gets together to divvy things up as best they can, so I imagine that will happen, and whatever cousins/etc don't take I would like to see donated to either a public library or a secondhand shop.

This is quite a relevant discussion thread for me. My Mum passed away this week at 69. During the last couple of years she moved from tree books to E-books and electronic audiobooks. I do not intend telling the powers that be she passed away in case I lose her collection. Instead i have merged her account with mine so I will have access to it.

One of my nephews has is developing as great a love of books as I have, so I hope he will take my collection. Whatever is left, I'd like to see donated to a library/school/secondhand shop.

I often think about it and I think some of my reletives (or whoever I leave the books to) is going to sell it. I´m not really in the company of many bookworms. Well, they´re going to sell or give it away, if plants don´t eat the books first.

It will be in my will that any of my books that my family members don't want, are to be donated. I don't care where - there are many places where books will be welcomed. GoodWill, literacy projects, prisons, nursing homes, hospitals, etc. My family knows better than to discard my books. They know I will come back to haunt them.

This year I plan on making a will
In it I will have my kids take what they want, I doubt they will as they are not huge readers. The rest I plan on donating

We are retiring in the not too distant future. We plan to move then, and I don't know what will happen to my books. I am afraid I won't be able to afford to ship them all, and I am already getting anxiety attacks about it. :)

I hope my son and daughter will continue to develop their love of reading (they are both under 3) so they can fight over them. My step-son has gone back & forth from liking to read to disliking it so...who knows if he will have any interest.
If not my family, any women's shelters that need books would be most welcome to my collection.

I know, that's one of the scariest things about moving!! The BOOKS

we bought our house 1-2 months before moving in, and went back and forth from our flat every weekend, to paint walls etc and move stuff in gradually, as I was very pregnant at the time. I managed to bring 1-2 boxes of books every trip, so my husband never really saw them all at once, and it wasn't such a huge task :-)

Great way to do it, lol! I know,; I have 5 overstuffed bookshelves now, after losing some in my last move . Getting ready to move myself but not sure where and how I'll get them all in since I'll be going to either an efficiency or small 1 bedroom. ..

As far as who gets them when I'm gone I want them donated to a shelter; most of my friends aren't as book crazy as I am so of the ones I have they're welcome to take what they want them donate the rest

That was my problem too. Moving from a 3 bedroom house into a one bedroom condo was really tough because of my books. I only had 400 something and they all made the move with me but my new bookcases only accommodated about 300 books. At first I was being very careful as I pulled books out of boxes and had to decide if it was keep or go but I admit the last 100 or so I was really ruthless because I had too many books left. Right now I have eleven books sitting on the media cabinet and no place to put them because I went book shopping twice since I filled my bookcases. I never learn.

wow I thought I was the only one who worries about what will happen to my books!! there are times when I'm afraid my books will be thrown away. :(
it would be my biggest nightmare!

My best friend has already decided he is going to murder me for my books, so it's not in my hands any more :P
