Francesca | 780 comments 1. Totally should've gotten a sequel
Most stand alone books I've read have worked well as stand alones and I've never felt like they needed a sequel but I would've enjoyed a sequel to Battle Royale. That could've been interesting!

2. Totally should've had a spin off series
Harry Potter Boxset. Ok, I know we're technically getting one of Harry's kids but there are so many other parts of the story that I would love spin offs for. There are so many opportunities for good spin offs in this series.

3. An author who totally should write more books
Stephen King. Just keep writing forever, please!

4. A character who totally should've ended up with someone else
This is difficult as I generally like the pairings that a lot of authors pick but I did always quite like the idea of Harry and Luna.

5. Totally should've ended differently
My Sister's Keeper. God, I hated that ending. The movie ending was much better, IMO. It's one of the few cases where I rate the movie higher than the book and it's because of that ending.

6. Totally should've had a movie franchise
I haven't read enough series' for this question as a lot of the book series I already know and like are already movie franchises.

7. Totally should've had a TV show
Asking For It. I think it would make a great one off series. Maybe a Netflix produced series or something like that.

8. Totally should've had only one point of view
This is a terrible question for me because I love multiple POV in books. If I had to choose maybe All the Bright Places would've been better with only one or the other instead of both but even then I think it worked quite well.

9. Totally should have a cover change
Any books with movie/TV show covers and with actors/actresses plastered on them. The only exception to this is if the book has come after the movie or show and is a tie in of some sort I.e. an encyclopaedia or something about the series/movie, etc.

10. Totally should've kept the original covers
Any that have changed normal covers to ones of actors/actresses and movie/TV show covers.

11. Totally should've stopped at book one
I have no idea, I haven't read enough series' to make this call and some of the series' I have read, I've only read the first book so I don't feel like I can judge the others properly without having read them.

Susan | 143 comments I'm going to think about some of these...

1. Totally should've gotten a sequel
From the Mixed-Up Files of Mrs. Basil E. Frankweiler What's in the rest of the files?!?! I need to know!

2. Totally should've had a spin off series

3. An author who totally should write more books
Unfortunately, most of the ones I can think of are dead.

4. A character who totally should've ended up with someone else

5. Totally should've ended differently

6. Totally should've had a movie franchise

7. Totally should've had a TV show
Elizabeth Peters' Amelia Peabody series

8. Totally should've had only one point of view

9. Totally should have a cover change

10. Totally should've kept the original covers
I really don't like the movie covers for The Lord of the Rings or the TV covers for Kerry Greenwood's Phryne Fisher books. Earlier versions of both were so much better. The best covers for LOTR were the ones with Tolkien's own art.

11. Totally should've stopped at book one
Dune Oh, it got so bad!

Rachel A. (abyssallibrarian) | 3239 comments 1. Totally should've gotten a sequel
I'm having a really hard time with this one, because most of the stand-alones that I've read have either wrapped up the story perfectly already, or didn't interest me enough to want to read more. The only one that really came to mind was Eleanor & Park. Although I liked the end and thought it was quite realistic, I still wanted to find out what happened next.

2. Totally should've had a spin off series
Going for the obvious here, but I guess I'd have to say Harry Potter Boxset. On the one hand, I think they are perfect the way they are and adding anything more might weaken the series, but on the other, I want to read more! For example, I would love to find out more about Voldemort's rise to power, or how the original Order of the Phoenix battled him. Or about Dumbledore's life.

3. An author who totally should write more books
To be fair, she is still writing books but over the past few years, I've noticed that they have slowed down. But I'm choosing my favourite: Jodi Picoult.

4. A character who totally should've ended up with someone else
I'm usually on-board with who the character actually ends up with. The Hunger Games ending threw me a bit at first, but after thinking about, it was the way that made a lot more sense given the characters and the events of the books.

5. Totally should've ended differently
Aristotle and Dante Discover the Secrets of the Universe. This choice might be a bit controversial, and it may be because I didn't quite get into the book as much as other people seemed to, but the ending did not seem natural to me. At times, I felt that the characters (Ari in particular) were forced into a situation and told what they should be feeling, and it didn't always seem that genuine to me. I don't know if it necessarily should have ended differently, but maybe the lead up to the ending should have been different.

6. Totally should've had a movie franchise
I'm not sure how well this would have worked because there many books, but I've always thought the Pendragon series (link to book one here: The Merchant of Death) would have made a great movie series. Also, I would have loved it A Series of Unfortunate Events Box: The Complete Wreck had continued their movie series.

7. Totally should've had a TV show
This is cheating a bit since it did have a TV series, but with such a long book series, there could have been many more episodes. I'm thinking of Babysitters Club Collection #1 (By the way, if anyone knows where I can watch this series online, please let me know). The show that did exist was very well-cast and well-made.

Another one which I think would make an amazing children's series is Junie B. Jones and the Stupid Smelly Bus, an absolutely hilarious book series that probably would have been really funny to watch.

8. Totally should've had only one point of view
This is the easiest item on the list by far for me. Definitely going with Allegiant. There really wasn't much difference between Tris and Four's voices anyway, and I had a lot of trouble keeping track of who was narrating each chapter, even though I often read books with multiple perspectives with no problem. I don't think very much was added to the story by splitting the book between both characters, except obviously the reaction to the ending.

9. Totally should have a cover change
Questions about covers are tricky for me since I really don't pay too much attention to covers unless they are really disgusting or scary. I can't think of anything that I would change.

10. Totally should've kept the original covers
Another possibly strange choice, but I think the The Royal Diaries : Elizabeth I, Isabel Jewel of Castilla, Cleopatra VII, Marie Antoinette - Boxed set of 4 re-releases. This was one of my favourite series as a child, and a huge part of the appeal for me was the hardcover diary format, with gold-edged pages. Recently, these books have apparently been re-released with covers that I really hate. Whereas the original series had beautiful pictures of the princesses on each cover, the re-releases look very unrealistic and remind me of Barbie dolls.

11. Totally should've stopped at book one
I'm not a huge fan of series, and I only really stick with them if the first book or two really catch my attention. I can't think of anything that I've read that should have stuck to one book.

Jody (jodybell) | 3477 comments I'm also going to have to think about some of these!

1. Totally should've gotten a sequel
Like the others in the thread, I think most of the stand-alone books I've read have been wrapped up really well. I would have loved to know what happened after More Than This and The Handmaid's Tale, but ... (view spoiler)

2. Totally should've had a spin off series
I think there are more than enough series out there!

3. An author who totally should write more books
E.B. White - if he could have written more books as beautiful as Charlotte's Web, I would be a happy girl.

4. A character who totally should've ended up with someone else
Harry Potter - I never really felt "it" between him and the person he ended up with. No chemistry in the movies either, IMO.

5. Totally should've ended differently
Nothing comes to mind, but Middlemarch should have ended about 600 pages earlier.

6. Totally should've had a movie franchise
I think The Lunar Chronicles (Cinder etc.) would make great movies.

7. Totally should've had a TV show
I'd actually like to see Jude the Obscure as a mini-series.

8. Totally should've had only one point of view
Not reduced to just one, but there was at least one POV in Wonder that I remember seeming completely pointless.

9. Totally should have a cover change
Anything with a movie-related cover.

10. Totally should've kept the original covers
Same as above - anything that changed to movie covers.

11. Totally should've stopped at book one
Twilight. Or even better, the first one should never have been published in the first place. Ditto for Fifty Shades of Grey.

J Austill | 1079 comments 1. Totally should've gotten a sequel

Starship Troopers. Ends right when things start getting good. And look at how many series have taken this idea and run with it. Scalzi is still running with it. What happens next?

The Time Machine qualifies too, for the same reason. There is so much more that can be explored and everyone who read this book instantly realized that and went to go write their own.

2. Totally should've had a spin off series

I Am Legend

3. An author who totally should write / have written more books

Douglas Adams. Terry Pratchett gives us more than 70. Stephen King gives us hundreds, and you give us 7 and a half? Get back in there and get writing.

4. A character who totally should've ended up with someone else

Pip (Philip Pirrip), dude lets have a talk - there are more ladies in the world than just Estella. Get out a bit.

5. Totally should've ended differently

Stardust - sure its different, but it managed to avoid any suspense or conflict at all making the momentum slow to a crawl and then die.

6. Totally should've had a movie franchise

Oxford Time Travel series - such a brilliant concept and oh so humorous.

7. Totally should've had a TV show

Dune, this story can't be done in 2 or 4 hours it needs seasons and seasons and more seasons. I'll also accept the Pandora Sequence (Void Series).

8. Totally should've had only one point of view

World War Z: An Oral History of the Zombie War. While I think that the concept of this book is one of the best I've seen, the author simply cannot write in more than one voice. There's something just completely wrong about a Chinese Doctor who has never been out of his country and lives in rural eastern china talking like a middle class American. And then we get South Africans with American slang, Japanese Samurai with American slang, and the ever popular Brits who speak the Queen's best American.

9. Totally should have a cover change

Anything published >100 years ago. Do you guys even realize how boring your books look? Get creative!

10. Totally should've kept the original covers

The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy. You see this little green guy? He's not in the book, but if you leave him off the cover I am coming for you.

11. Totally should've stopped at book one

Rendezvous with Rama, its the only one that was actually written by Arthur C. Clarke anyway.

Susan | 143 comments Douglas Adams died in 2001. His estate has hired Eoin Colfer to continue the Hitchhiker's series, though.

Michelle (girlvsbook) | 1173 comments 1. The Royal We by Heather Cocks & Jessica Morgan totally should've gotten a sequel. I'd read that so hard.

2. Like Francesca said, Harry Potter totally should've had a spin-off series. I know we're getting that story about Harry's children, but I'd much rather read about James, Remus, Sirius, Severus, and Lily back in their Hogwarts days. Or even dig deeper into Dumbledore's fascinating family history.

And even though I wasn't a huge fan of Twilight, I'd definitely read a spin-off series about the Volturi or the Cullen clan pre-Bella. Lets be honest, Bella is the absolute worst part of that series.

3. Ernest Cline is an author who totally should write more books. I wasn't as impressed with Armada as I was with Ready Player One, but I love his style.

4. Bianca Piper is character who totally should've ended up with someone else. I hardly think it's a spoiler since it's pretty obvious from the book blurb who she'll end up with, but I think I would have liked it better if she found her self-confidence and went off to college single. She should have ended up with herself - a happier, healthier, more confident Bianca Piper.

5. Thirteen Reasons Why totally should've ended differently. Well, not exactly. The actual ending was perfect but there is an ending of sorts that doesn't sit well with me. I felt like the central character's tape, which essentially marks the end of his part in the dead girl's story, was kind of a cop out. (view spoiler) We just needed someone to drive the story and we didn't want the audience to dislike him when it was all said and done. I thought that could have been handled differently.

6. Truthwitch totally should've had a movie franchise. I'd love to see this world come to life on the big screen.

7. The Cuckoo's Calling totally should've had a TV show. I think I read somewhere it was going to get one on BBC One too. I'm excited. I hope they cast someone great for Cormoran Strike.

8. This Is Where It Ends totally should've had only one point of view. Or, at the very least, at least one less point of view. I think it would have made for a more developed, more emotionally impactful story.

9. Shatter Me totally should have a cover change. . I've never been a fan of the covers of this series. They look like amateur level photo manipulations to me.

10. Me and Earl and the Dying Girl totally should've kept the original covers. I thought the book was crap, but the cover was very nice.

Me and Earl and the Dying Girl by Jesse Andrews to Me and Earl and the Dying Girl by Jesse Andrews

Honorable mention for the Across the Universe cover(s).

Across the Universe (Across the Universe, #1) by Beth Revis to Across the Universe (Across the Universe, #1) by Beth Revis

11. A Thousand Pieces of You totally should've stopped at book one . Because the second book in the series was rubbish compared to the first.

Me too! I want to see the Marauders when they were younger and see the full story of James and Lily getting together. I feel like James got a really bad rep from the series as we only ever got Snape's opinion of him which obviously wasn't good because he got the girl that Snape loved. People act like James was horrible but he definitely wasn't, proved by what a great friend he is to Sirius, Remus, and even Peter, and the fact that we know how nice Lily was supposed to be and she wouldn't have ended up with him if he was as horrible as Snape made him out to be. So seeing the full story would be great and would shine more light on each of the Marauders that we didn't get to see much of in the series!
