Lara (elbe) Hey! Another new one to goodreads, I'm Lara - 32 living in Charleston, SC. I run a circus at home with a beautiful, wild 2 year old son, a husband of 10 years that is just as wild (who hates me reading because he is such an attention hog:)), 2 sweet, fun Australian Cattle Dogs (that run around the home as if they actually are herding cattle), and the only other female in the home - my purring savior in the storm - my cat. Needless to say.....reading is my form of R&R!!

I joined GoodReads because I am always looking for 'what next' - and enjoy getting into discussions when I've really gotten into a book - especially a series. Obviously I joined this group because I am into basically all things paranormal and I don't know anyone on this site!! So I wanted to list a couple of my favorites and if my taste runs along yours or if you have any suggestions on what I should get into next - please don't be shy to friend request - I need to find some people to follow to get ideas from :)!!

My Favorites, so far:
The Fever Series by Karen Moning
The Mortal Insturments by Cassandra Clare
The Sookie Stackhouse books by Charlaine Harris
Vampire Academy by Richelle Mead

Nice to meet ya'll ;)!!

Here's a few: Mercy Thompson by Patricia Briggs, Morganville Vampires by Rachel Caine, Kitty Norville series by Carrie Vaughn, Night Huntress by Jeaniene Frost. That's only 4. Thought I'd give some of the others a chance to chime in, too!

message 109: by Amy (new)

Amy | 1 comments Hi Everyone :D My name is Amy and I'm from New York. I just finished reading the Women of the Otherworld series by Kelley Armstrong (let me tell you I could NOT put those books down) and I had joined the group for that series. In some of the posts this group was mentioned and I figured I would give you all a shot and see what you are reading. So far I have to say that I love the string on the e-readers, I am looking into getting one for a present and it has been most helpful :D Well, I had seen the term Urban Fantasy thrown around a bunch and I think I got a handle now on what it is. I'm not too big on catagorizing books, if it hooks me I'll read it ^^ I love pretty much all books, except those that are too involved with history. I plan on reading the Sookie Stackhouse series next ... if I can get my hands on them before I go insane from not reading. I have been an avid reader my whole life and I can barely remeber all of the books I have read. Aside from this urban fantasy stuff, I seem to like mystery/thriller/some serial killer gone awry books, ummm evolutionary theroy (yes I'm a science geek and biologist by profession) .... pretty much just about anything .. like I said before. So if anyone has some good suggestions for me, please let me know ^^ and friends are always welcome :D

Theresa (tsorrels) Amy wrote: "I'm not too big on catagorizing books, if it hooks me I'll read it..."

Welcome to the group, Amy. I, too, am not really big on categorizing books. I have a bookshelf on GR labeled "fantasy" which encompasses PNR, UF, straight fantasy, science fiction, etc. :)

message 111: by Michelle (new)

Michelle Picard (michellepicard) | 42 comments Hey all,
My name is Michelle. I'm 39 and live in Massachusetts with my hubby and two overactive young sons. I've been reading one form of fantasy or another since I was a kid, but found urban fantasy about eight or nine years ago. It makes up most of my reading list. I work part-time as a social worker and am lucky enough to write novels the rest of the time. One's due out any day.

I just finished Kelly Armstrong's Frostbitten tonight, got on Å·±¦ÓéÀÖ to update my status, and decided to check out this group. It's great. Like so many others I like Butcher (I even find myself wondering what Harry's up to when I'm doing things like dishes. He's become very vivid for me, and not because of the tv series), Briggs, Charlaine Harris, Kim Harrison, Vicki Petterssen, Rachel Caine (Haven't read her YA's, just her WeatherWarden series) Karen Chance, Karen Marie Moning, Marjorie M. Liu (PNR, but it feels somehow related to UF. Lynn Viehl feels that way for me to with her Darkyn series.)Devon Monk, Keri Arthur,JR Ward, the list is endless. I do read PNR frequently, and regular fantasy (love Jacqueline Carey), and sci-fi romance, but the greatest majority is UF and I love it.
Interestingly, the next book on my pile is CE Murphy's latest. But since October ends tomorrow (LOL) and it's the October book, I don't think I'll be jumping into that discussion. I can't read that fast. But I do plan to read the November book.

It's nice to find others as addicted to this stuff. As much as I like to write, since I started doing it part of me resents the time away from reading other folks books. It definitely crimps the number of books I can get through now. My strategy is to order what I can through the library and only buy what isn't there. Even with that plan this book addiction is a serious financial disadvantage.

Glad to be here.

message 112: by Igorina (new)

Igorina Hi! I'm Igorina. Not my real name of course. I do answer to it in real life though.

I'm 24. I live in Alabama.

I read more than is probably healthy. I adore urban fantasy, paranormal, science fiction, and horror. Romance in my fantasy isn't a problem for me as long as I can find it somewhat believable and not existing solely for the sake of adding porn to an already lackluster plot.

I'm new to goodreads so if you check my profile, it is no where near accurate yet.

I also hate it when I read a heavily hyped book to find myself thoroughly let down. So expect to read the occasional rant on my part disguised as a negative review.

Michelle, you can post in any of the older Group Reads whenever you wish. After their month is over, I move them to the "Archive" folder, but they are still open for discussion. :) And, welcome to the group!

Michelle Picard (michellepicard) | 42 comments Thanks Theresa. It's only been a few days, but I love it. I think I was momentarily disoriented about the CE Murphy book. The group was reading her first in the series, but I'm just beginning her latest in it. So I guess I didn't miss out after all (LOL).

V.R. (vrleavitt) | 8 comments Hi everybody!!

I'm Vanessa and I read all sorts of stories, but prefer paranormal/fantasy.

Lately, I've been reading a lot of Koontz, including the Frankenstein trilogy, which I'm enjoying a lot.

As for urban fantasy, I really like Melissa Marr, her first one was "Wicked Lovely." Has anybody else read her?

colleen the convivial curmudgeon (blackrose13) I read an enjoyed Wicked Lovely. I liked Ink Exchange, too, but a bit less so. I haven't read Fragile Eternity, yet, though, and will be waiting for paperback.

I like her stuff, but it's something of a guilty pleasure. I've avoided most of the vampire romance stuff, but I have a weakness for things faerie. *grins*

message 118: by V.R. (new)

V.R. (vrleavitt) | 8 comments Yeah, it was hard for me to pass up a faerie story too. :-) I haven't read the other two yet, but will probably do so at some point.

OMG Vanessa I love Dean Koontz! I just love the whole thing of Life Expectancy, the family aspect characters, plot twists. :'( I kind of what to read it again.

I have tried the Odd Thomas series, it's not that I didn't like it, but I found other books that I would rather read before it. I will try and get to it someday.

Also, I am reading the first in his Frankenstein series!!!! I love it. :D

Nifer (keetahn) | 1 comments Greetings & Salutations! I'm Nifer - a 30-something gamer chick living in Milwaukee. I am an avid reader, and am always on the lookout for new books/authors to read.

I'm currently reading The First Law series by Joe Abercrombie, as well as Boneshaker by Cherie Priest.

message 123: by Hannah (new)

Hannah (hanjae) | 1 comments Hi all! I'm Hannah from Sydney, Australia. I've been a fan of books (particularly those in the fantasy genre) ever since I was a tiny button, thanks to Roald Dahl, Brian Jacques and so forth.

I used to read mainly straight fantasy, but I've developed an interest in urban fantasy lately and once I discovered the lack of it on my bookshelves, I decided to remedy that immediately by joining this group :D A few things I've read and enjoyed recently:

The Negotiator Trilogy by C.E. Murphy
The Mortal Instruments by Cassandra Clare
The Blood series by Tanya Huff (up until I found out who Vicki ended up with, and then I was crushed)
Dresden Files by Jim Butcher
Weather Warden series by Rachel Caine

In the spirit of things, I ran to the library this morning and picked up Melissa Marr's Wicked Lovely since it's so often recommended! Can't wait to start reading.

Looking forward to chatting with everyone and finding exciting new books to read! Feel free to add me (whether we have the same tastes or just for the heck of it) because I'd be more than happy to have more friends to share book updates with :D

message 125: by Emma (new)

Emma (emmauk007) Hi,
My name is Emma , 33 living in Durban South Africa, originally from the UK but I have been here now for over 6 yrs. I am married, have been so for 6 years, no children. I love groups like this as it gives me an opportunity to doscover new writers and i also like to hear of other peoples views of a particular book. I am not into romance novels,a bit to corny for me, but if there any good authors anyone can recommend in this genre then let me know, I will give anyone a try. I prefer a good storyline and If it happens to have some romance in it well so be it. I like all sorts of books, I can equally sit down with an historical novel, as well as Sci/Fi. As long as it catches me within the first 50 pages or so, then I will read it.I have just finished reading THE HOST ,it was a really creative book, it was almsot as if it was a completely different write than the one that wrote Twilight. I really enjoyed it and would recommend it. I am curretnly reading Sookie Stackhouse seriesa nd also The thirteenth tale by Diane Seterfield.

Happy to be here, and looking forward to participating

Emma

message 126: by Helen Smith (new)

Helen Smith | 1 comments Hi everyone! I'm Helen, 24 and living in Devon, UK. I was raised and still live in a small village where everyone seems to read 'The Sun' (UK Newspaper) and little else.

I have been reading Urban Fantasy for more than a few years by now. I started out reading books with vampires in (thank you Buffy) and quickly fell into PNR with a wonderous 'bargin basement' bookshop find at the tender age of 14 of a Laurell K. Hamilton book (and yes I am STILL reading them :-o). I will now happily read stuff that doesn't have vampires in. Me and my mum are both BIG readers and it's my fault she read UB & PNR stuff... My mum also has a slight (I mean extreme) book buying compulsion, the plus side is that we have THOUSANDS of books, the down side is that the house is running out of room for them.

I only just joined Å·±¦ÓéÀÖ in my constant quest for what to read next and also to talk with people who read the same stuff. I buy almost all my books online due to a dire lack of pyhsical bookshops around.

Currently reading The Night Watch by Lukyaneko (and just buying all the sequels too :X)

Not gonna post a list of fave UF books here as I'll be here all day if I start one.

So um yeah hi!

Annette | 3 comments Hi,
My name is Annette and I'm from California. I wanted to join a group and saw that this one fits be best. I work at a library and love to read. My room is full of of bookshelves and I just recently had to buy two bookshelves. (Working at a library that has a book sale is not good for me or my wallet really =D)Other then that I like going to the desert and riding quads. My favorite authors at the moment are Kelley Armstrong, Jeanne Stein, Cassandra Clare, and Libba Bray.

I'm currently reading Eyes Like Stars. I like it so far, it's pretty funny.

Narnies | 15 comments Hullo,
I'm Ariana, I'm 24 and live in New Zealand in the tiny pacific corner of the world!
I love reading and as it seems to be growing steadily unpopular nowadays i was delighted to find goodreads :) I began reading paranormal when i was 12 when i picked up L.J Smith's Vampire Diaries and Night World series and have been hooked ever since. Favourite authors at the moment are Karen Marie Moning (her Fever series is AMAZING!!!), Patricia Briggs (Alpha and Omega, Mercy Thompson), Jeaniene Frost, Charlaine Harris (honestly? who can resist???), Rachel Vincent and Marjorie M. Liu...
I'm a fast reader so i love discovering more books and authors, so if you have any recommendations, send them my way!
Oh, and I'm currently reading Neil Gaiman's Neverwhere :)

I am currently an Enlgish student in Atlanta and I keep many blogs including Blogspot and youtube and ofcourse twitter and goodreads just to name a few. I think that I will really enjoy being a part of this group. I am a little new to the fantasy kind of book but I am enjoying its mixture between other that I love such as thriller and urban. I cant think of anything else to add at the time lol. :)

message 131: by C.J. (new)

C.J. Ellisson (cjellisson) Howdy! I'm a newbie as well. I'm a 39 year old happily married mother of two kids aged 9 and 7. We've got two Staffordshires (smaller cousins to the pit-bull), one cat, fish and a few frogs. I live in northern VIrginia and used to be a Realtor and property manager.

I've loved reading this genre since before it had a name and I'm thrilled to see so many new authors and titles coming out each year - gives me more to read! I'm not a huge fan on the romance angle of the UF books, but I certainly don't mind a good sex scene thrown in when appropriate.

This year I wrote my own book and have been working like crazy to get it published and spread the word. I joined book blogs to meet reviewers like you guys. Hopefully some of you will be willing to take a chance on a complete unknown like me and give my book a shot.

Wishing you a great holiday season,
C.J.

message 132: by Susan (Suz) (new)

Susan (Suz) (sharney) Welcome to the group ladies! C.J. would love to learn more about your book!

message 133: by C.J. (new)

C.J. Ellisson (cjellisson) Hmm..let's see. Here are the basics:

-It's written first person present tense from the female protagonist's POV, so it may not be everyone's cup of tea.

- Human husband and vampire wife run an inn above the Arctic circle in Alaska that caters to an undead clientele. They are crazy in love with each other and it comes through quiet clearly in their snarky banter and steadfast devotion in not killing the other while sleeping.

- Book opens with a murder that is neither an employee nor a guest and the innkeepers scramble to figure out the killer without alerting their randy bloodsucking clients.

It really is a fun romp and I had a great time writing it. I'm working on the second book right now while waiting for word from publishers. I'm happy to send you the official jacket copy if you'd like to read a little more or you can email me for a pdf copy - I'm always up for more eyes on the story.

Appreciate the interest, thanks!
C.J.

Cait | 2 comments Hello! I'm Caitlin. I love Patricia Brigg's Mercedes Thompson series for Urban Fantasy, Lois McMaster Bujold's Vorkosigan series for Science Fiction, and Diana Gabaldon's Outlander series for Romance. I mostly read fantasy (including UF), but Bujold and Gabaldon are the exceptions.
I am 21 and a university student in Illinois (actually, I just did a semester in France, but I am leaving for the states tomorrow).
I absolutely love reading and writing. I am always on the lookout for more books to read; my to-read list is catching up to my read list.

message 138: by Kristie (last edited Jan 01, 2010 01:34AM) (new)

Kristie Hi everyone!

My name is Kristie I'm 25 from Arizona. I am a mom of two crazy but beautiful boys. I have been married for 7 years. When I am not taking care of the boys, my husband, the dog or the house you can find me in my "cave" as my girlfriends call it (really my bedroom) reading or writing. I really read everything but my favorites are UF and PNR. I have also just finished my first novel so I am looking into getting a lit. agent so keep your fingers crossed for me please.

I'm excited to be in a group with lovers of UB. I have tons of friends who love to read but they don't like UB. So I never have anyone to talk to about the books that I am reading or writing.

When I'm not in my cave reading or writing I love a girls night out with a great martini, shopping and we always top it off with a movie.

Ronda (thebookdragon) Hello all! Was glad to find this group--I've been on a UF kick lately after a long-time mystery kick and now I can't seem to get enough of this genre! I'm 42, live in East TN, and am in my 2nd career as an elementary librarian. My son and I live in a veritable zoo, and since it's been so cold lately, our house is kind of like Switzerland at night, with the 2 dogs, 20-lb. cat, severe macaw and single fish all cohabiting peaceably. Looking forward to learning about new (to me) authors and series.

I had been reading non-fiction and just thought that I didn't like reading very much since I could hardly ever finish a book. After reluctantly watching Twilight, I was so hooked... and I had to read the books to see what was going to happen next.

Between August and December, I read 50 books- 99% of them being supernatural in some way. I am sooo hooked! (or obsessed)

I love to read, garden, incubate eggs--that's why so many chickens--and play with our Wii.
I never thought I'd say that my favorite Christmas present was a computer game! I'm loving my Mario Kart game!
I love urban fantasy, well paranormal anything, historical romances and a wide variety of "how do I do that" books.
I'm looking forward to attending the Romantic Times Book Convention in Columbus this year! Going to make costumes for me and my daughter Katie to wear--this year's theme is elemental fairies. Any ideas?? :-)

Shera- Yeah, it's kinda sad that I read that much. You would think that I am a hermit. LoL But I''m not. :-)

I basically read while my husband watches TV, while I am cooking, while the clothes are washing, on my lunch break... and any other free moment I get. Luckily, he's very supportive of my new addiction. :-)
But... I don't have kids...yet... so that allows me more free time too.

I used to make fun of my mom reading so much.... now I am turning into her. AHHHH!!! It happens to us all, doesn't it? :-)
