Donna (BookDragonGirl) (bookdragongirl) I just started it. It really starts off with a bang and now I'm into it. Of course, I'm only a few chapters in.

Elora Mitchell | 578 comments Got if from the library and will start soon. My sweetheart saw it on the shelf and asked, "What's this?" Told him it was for the Hidden Gems read. "Oh okay," was his response. Apparently this monthly reading group is now a mainstay in my house. :)

Erin | 8 comments This was a pretty great book with lots of action. I loved the dragons and I think Tori's abilities are pretty awesome. I will probably continue with the series!

Glad to hear you liked it, Donna and Erin! I might have to postpone reading it until next week since I have to finish up some library books first, but I'm excited about it. I love dragons!

message 15: by Elora (new)

Elora Mitchell | 578 comments There were some things in the beginning that I really didn't like...the mention of hot, muscled men and the obvious love triangle lead-in. (view spoiler) Other than that, I liked it. I thought the action picked up at the end.

No probs. Fun to learn new words.

Well it is about Dragons its limited how realistic it can be.
And it might help to read the other books in the series, things do get explained more.

Scorched (Scorched, #1) by Mari Mancusi Voices of Dragons by Carrie Vaughn Talon (Talon, #1) by Julie Kagawa His Majesty's Dragon (Temeraire, #1) by Naomi Novik lalalalala...read them!
hey its dragon books, so not THAT off topic.

Lol, Donna. You make me laugh! :)

I totally get why people would love to read about them, but I guess I kindof feel sorry for guys in the real world. As women, we tend to complain about being sexualized (and I'm not at all saying we aren't-don't even get me started on that!), but I feel that a lot of books list the guy's qualities as being hot or good looking. It kindof puts all their personality/good characteristics as unimportant. I know, I'm weird. But it's just the things I think about. :)

I agree with that.
I kind of would like more love interest with great smiles but "bad" bods.

message 23: by [deleted user] (new)

Started it today.
I get the crtitique.
But still love the world++
I think its because dragons are usually something that you assosiate with high fantasy, its so fun seeing it in modern day.

@Elora - That's not weird, I totally agree! Sexualizing/objectifying anyone is not a good thing. No one should be seen/treated as a sexual object. The problem may be worse for women, but men can definitely be objectified, too.

@Oda - That's also something I like about the book! I haven't gotten very far in it, but I agree that it's cool to see dragons in a modern-day setting, since I feel like that's quite rare.

I finished the book earlier today.
Upon rereading it I do see someplotholes, but still love it very much.
The first time I read it I focused more on the plot than Tori`s snobbishness, still you have to excuse her with her ubrining it would be strange if she isent like she is. I suppose she is kinda buffy-ish kick ass but in heels.
Also, love Rosa and Bess. Appriciated Rosa more this time around.
Actually got so into it, I just started rereading the sequel.

Finished at last! Oda I agree with you about Rosa and Bess––they were my favorite characters by far. They're really cool and Bess was so funny. :)

Other than that though, I had trouble connecting with any of the other characters. Like you said, it made sense that Tori was kind of a snob, but I just ... didn't like her. :P Plus I felt like the romance/love triangle was extremely forced and took a lot away from the book. And in general I wish there'd been more focus on actually fighting dragons and less on the drama, training, etc. It got kinda repetitive. So, over all the book was just okay for me, but it was a quick and fun read!

Jenny (juliababyjen) | 1572 comments I finally started this last night! So far I'm really liking it, but not too far in yet.

message 28: by Jenny (new)

Jenny (juliababyjen) | 1572 comments I finally finished this last night! Overall, I liked it! I actually really liked Tori, and most of the characters. Actually, my fave was Dirk (view spoiler)

I wish there had been more action, I agree with Brigid that the training parts got to be old. And the love triangle was totally unnecessary IMO. But a fun read!
