Jade Diamond (jadediamond) How To Participate:

1. Post here telling the challenge leader that you'd like to join the challenge. You can choose your books for the challenge at the beginning, or add them as you go. You can join a challenge at any time, as long as the challenge is still active.

2. Whenever you finish a book for the challenge, post here and let the challenge leader know so they can update your progress.

Some members choose to update their original post with their progress to keep track of their challenge more easily, but make sure to also post a new message so the challenge leader knows to go look at your original post.

Elsbeth (elsbethgm) | 47 comments This is what I call a challenge!

Since I'm now reading a book which takes place in Mali and will read one shortly which takes place in Suriname, it seems like a good time to give this a try...

1. Voetstappen in het Zand by Sarah Challis (5-11-2016) - Mali

message 7: by Ashley (new)

Ashley (mochi234) | 54 comments This sounds fun & challenging!! Say you have a fantasy book that's a retelling of Romeo & Juliet. While it's location in the book is a fictional place, could I assume since it is a retelling that it took place in Italy? Also with other fantasy/fiction books, if they have fake places but you can pretty much figure out what country they're supposed to be based in does that count? Or does my book have to straight up say it takes place in Moscow, Russia?

I have recently read Private India: City on Fire by James Patterson taking place in India. And Private taking place in the U.S.

If they're retellings, that would be fine. But with other book it would be preferred if the book says the Location.

message 9: by Dave (new)

Dave Taylor blindly this may take awhile, even for me, challenge accepted. :0)

message 10: by Elsbeth (new)

Elsbeth (elsbethgm) | 47 comments I know what you mean, Dave! Some countries will be easy, while others are almost impossible... I think it will be fun, trying to find books for the not so easy ones!

Maybe we can help each other with finding books for the more difficult ones?!

message 11: by Dave (new)

Dave Taylor Ellsworth that sounds like a great idea, most of the books I read take place in 'safe' zones, you know, the usual suspects America or England, with the occasional Scandi-thriller thrown in, but recently I have been spreading my bibliographic wings so this should be a great cultural adventure. Tally ho! :o)

message 12: by Dave (new)

Dave Taylor Ellsworth? silly auto correct
that should say Elspeth, technology is great except when it isn't!

message 13: by Dave (new)

Dave Taylor and it still can't get it right sorry Elsbeth

message 14: by Ashley (new)

Ashley (mochi234) | 54 comments I like the idea of helping people out with the difficult locations!! I'm definitely up for the challenge, it'll probably take me forever but sounds fun :)

I wonder how many years it will take to finish this one... :-)

I can see a long and winding road ahead, most of it is uphill but by leaning on one another and taking a few breaks to enjoy the view, we will reach the summit and plant our flags declaring "we did it!"
:o)

I have recently been to my library and collected a book set partly in England and also in India by Hanif Kureishi called The Last Word

scrub that, it's set in England mainly, so it won't count towards India :o(. Back to the drawing board.

Բéܱ | 62 comments Hello friends, I´m not taking part in this challenge but I would like to recommend a book so you can tick off Algeria. The Stranger by Albert Camus is a French classic set in Algeria that raises moral and religious questions as well as those on our society today. It is also a quick read ;)

Because we have a north korea and regular korea in the world. They are actually 2 different countries, such as Vietnam back in the day. North Korea is ruled under Kim Jong-un & Korea has president Park Geun-hye.

Ashley (mochi234) | 54 comments Now that I'm researching more into how many countries there are in the world it really varies. the UN recognizes 195 complete countries. Then there are 201 states with partial recognition. 207 De Facto sovereign states & 249 Country codes. Here are some states we could consider adding that are technically countries in most of the countries of the world, but some don't recognize them. So I guess it depends on what you would personally consider a country:
Vatican City
Western Sahara
South Ossetia
Abkhazia
Northern Cyprus
Nagorno-Karabakh
Transnistria
Somaliland
Lugansk People's Republic
Donetsk People's Republic
Islamic State
Bermuda
Cook Islands
And here's my source for why I believe these countries could be added to the list. It explains what is a fully recognized state & how some states are not exactly fully recognized, yet are countries of their own even if they are technically within another state.
