BOM Author Tess Gerritsen
October 2016 -
Synopsis/Blurb:
The bestselling author of The Surgeon returns, and so does that chilling novel's diabolical villain. Though held behind bars, Warren Hoyt still haunts a helpless city, seeming to bequeath his evil legacy to a student all-too-diligent . . . and all-too-deadly.
THE APPRENTICE
It is a boiling hot Boston summer. Adding to the city's woes is a series of shocking crimes, in which wealthy men are made to watch while their wives are brutalized. A sadistic demand that ends in abduction and death.
The pattern suggests one man: serial killer Warren Hoyt, recently removed from the city's streets. Police can only assume an acolyte is at large, a maniac basing his attacks on the twisted medical techniques of the madman he so admires. At least that's what Detective Jane Rizzoli thinks. Forced again to confront the killer who scarred her - literally and figuratively - she is determined to finally end Hoyt's awful influence . . . even if it means receiving more resistance from her all-male homicide squad.
But Rizzoli isn't counting on the U.S. government's sudden interest. Or on meeting Special Agent Gabriel Dean, who knows more than he will tell. Most of all, she isn't counting on becoming a target herself, once Hoyt is suddenly free, joining his mysterious blood brother in a vicious vendetta. . . .
Filled with superbly created characters and the medical and police procedural details that are her trademark,The Apprentice is Tess Gerritsen at her brilliant best. Set in a stunning world where evil is easy to learn and hard to end, this is a thriller by a master who could teach other authors a thing or two.

Oh...that's awesome! I've started but got side tracked doing a beta read for an author. Can't wait to get back to this one.

yes...she's in this one, but not in a big way...more of an introduction to the character.

Yay!
Yay!

Aside from the character names and location, the books and the TV show are very different.
Actually glad I've never watched the television show...I have no expectations from that. Loving these books though!

I read most of the books before seeing the show and enjoy both for different reasons. They are so different that I managed to separate them in my mind quite easily (although there are a couple of plot developments that I wish were more like the books).
It's really gory - shocking revelations about this killer and dead bodies! Jeez. Hope to finish it tomorrow.

Feel free to openly discuss The Apprentice. This was an awesome read...graphic & chilling! Loved it!

I'd agree, Karen, there wasn't quite as much "on the edge of your seat" action. I liked the characterization of Jane much more in this one though. In the first she seemed more one-dimensional - a female cop with a chip on her shoulder. We learned much more about her here.

What did you all think of Agent Dean? And Hoyt's escape from prison?? omg.
I think this author is really good...this one is brilliantly written down to the minute details...the descriptions are so vivid, so real.

Oh...can't wait. It'll probably be a week or so for me.

Even though I usually don't like anything based on books, R&I I think did a really good job.
To some degree I prefer where the show took Jane's personal life vs the books, I don't mind the book love interest, but what came after I wasn't too keen on.

I'm going to start soon too, probably on the weekend.

Interesting. I'm the exact opposite. I prefer the way Jane's personal life develops in the books and was disappointed that it didn't go that way in the show. It could be because I read the books first and had certain expectations.

I suspect if the actress who played Jane ended up in book Jane's condition they would've followed that part of the book storyline.
Look at the Temperence Brennen books by Kathy Reichs vs the show. Show Tempe's personal life had to change due to real life circumstances. I don't mind that change, except I despise her current wardrobe.
Spoilers ahead!
