Thomus Veras | 1 comments I am trying to find a book, with a certain setting. I just recently finished playing the game Dishonored, and really enjoyed the setting, but more so the idea of the Lord Protector.

I'm trying to find a book, which is about the development of a relationship (Not necessarily a romantic one) where someone is paired with another to be entrusted to protect them till the end of their days. A Empress - Lord Protector. Queen/King - Knight etc.

Of Course, with a Sci-Fi or Fantasy focused setting. I find the idea intriguing and have finished recently the series I was reading so!

(I apologise if this is the wrong place to post!)

Any suggestions or points on how best to search is appreciated! I am not completely sure how to search for a book with a certain character bond or 'setting'. xD

Jim (jimmaclachlan) | 2369 comments That protector thing comes up a couple of times in The Crown Conspiracy & following books, once with a princess & another time... well, that would be a spoiler.

Starting with the 2nd book of Wexler's Shadow Campaigns series, the new, young queen (Raesinia) has a protector in Sothe, a formidable assassin, though I'm afraid I forget the "why" of that relationship. Raesinia is only one of the PoV characters in the series, though.

In McClellan's Powder Mage trilogy, a shaman (K-pol) that one of the main characters (Tamiel) met on another continent insists on following him around as his protector. Her magic is unlike any know to Tamiel's homeland. (Note Tamiel Is only one of several PoV characters in the trilogy. We had a discussion of Promise of Blood just a couple months ago.)

Interestingly, in both series the Protector is presented more as a servant.

S. D. Howarth (sdhowarth) | 5 comments The Riyira series uses protectors but it something of an informal arrangement with the main two characters. Very good books and well worth a read as various events show the necessity of the roles with the nobility.

If you want something similar you may enjoy the Wheel of Time series with the Warders role. A good series but a trudge at times until a rapid ending (I prefer the audiobooks).

Jim (jimmaclachlan) | 2369 comments Wolfling is SF & has the protector relationship develop & it's pivotal to the plot. Short book, almost a novella.

City of Stairs - a mousy spy and her bodyguard (who became the main POV in the last book of the trilogy)
The Curse of Chalion - a princess and her tutor/secretary (but also protector)
Dreamer's Pool - a healer and her protector (both met during jailtime)
The relationships in those books are not romantic hence not cheesy/tropey. I believe that opposite sexes facing hardship do not have to end up falling in love with each other.

Saul the Heir of Isauldur (krinnok) | 91 comments Try the Hawkmoon series by Michael Moorcock. It has that steampunk-y vibe with magic and technology mingling.
