If you're interested in post-war Hungary, I really enjoyed the black humour in Under the Frog by Tibor Fischer.

And I Darken is a YA genderbent retelling of Vlad the Impaler.
The Hangman's Daughter is set in Bavaria.
I've also got Linda Lafferty's work on my TBR:
The Bloodletter's Daughter: A Novel of Old Bohemia
The Drowning Guard: A Novel of the Ottoman Empire
House of Bathory
The Girl Who Fought Napoleon: A Novel of the Russian Empire

Love and Freedom: My Unexpected Life in Prague
A few I own but haven't read yet:
More Was Lost - memoir, Hungary
Under a Cruel Star: A Life in Prague, 1941-1968
Fiction:
The Journal of Countess Francoise Krasinska - Poland
Miklos Banffy's Transylvanian Trilogy
They Were Counted
Books mentioned in this topic
They Were Counted (other topics)More Was Lost (other topics)
The Journal of Countess Françoise Krasinska (other topics)
Love and Freedom: My Unexpected Life in Prague (other topics)
Under a Cruel Star: A Life in Prague, 1941-1968 (other topics)
Ideally, I'm searching for books dealing with events other than WWI or WWII-- I feel like those topics are overrepresented in HF right now. Also, I love Russian history but in this case am specifically seeking HF set in places besides Russia.
So any ideas? :)
