Michelle (girlvsbook) | 1173 comments It's kick off time! Yay! Put your reading caps on, my friends! For our last read-a-thon of 2016, we've cooked up some super fun goodies for you. If you're new to the ATY read-a-thons, welcome aboard! To participate, all you have to do is make a commitment to read as much as you can for one whole week. If you're behind on your challenge or reading goals for the year, this is an excellent time to play catch-up before the new year rings in.

Per usual, we'll be sprinkling in some little games throughout the week to accompany or bigger read-a-thon challenges so keep your eye on the Read-a-Thon folder throughout the week.

What bigger read-a-thon challenges, you ask? This week there will be a Battleship Team Challenge. Teams will use their amazing reading prowess to blow ships off their game board for all the glory. There's still time for a last minute sign-up if you missed it. More info on the Battleship Team Challenge can be found here.

Team Discussion Threads
Team Turtle
Team Dolphin
Team Sea Horse

If team challenges aren't really your thing, there's an individual challenge too! In this reading adventure, you'll have to read your way across the map to find your buried treasure. All the details on that are over here.

Before you get all wrapped up in the reading fun, though, why not fill out this brief kick off questionnaire so we can learn a little about you?

Kick Off Questionnaire
1. Tell us a little about yourself and why you decided to participate in the Read-a-Thon.

2. What books do you have in your "to be read" pile for the week?

3. Do you have any goals for the read-a-thon (i.e. number of books, number of pages, number of hours, etc.)?

4. Have you made any meals, prepared any snacks, or stocked up on any drinks to tide you over through the read-a-thon?

5. Where will you be doing your reading? Do you have a special spot picked out or will you be roaming around?

6. Will you be Tweeting, Instagramming, Vlogging, or Blogging through the event? If so, share your links with us.

Michelle (girlvsbook) | 1173 comments 1. Tell us a little about yourself and why you decided to participate in the Read-a-Thon. I'm Emm and I'm a bit of a read-a-thon-a-holic. Whoa, look at all those hyphens. I live in the U.S., in the great state of Ohio, with my fiance and our two dogs. We're expecting our first child in April of 2017 and we're pretty excited about it. I like sad songs, rain, and all things British.

2. What books do you have in your "to be read" pile for the week? My plan is to finish up Dash & Lily's Book of Dares by Rachel Cohn & David Levithan. Then I'm going to devour The Lies of Locke Lamora for our December BOTM. After that, I think I'll fill up on a bunch of The Walking Dead graphic novels by Robert Kirkman.

3. Do you have any goals for the read-a-thon (i.e. number of books, number of pages, number of hours, etc.)? My only real goal is to read as much as I can. I'm behind on my GR Reading Goal for 2016 and I'd really like to make it happen, if I still can.

4. Have you made any meals, prepared any snacks, or stocked up on any drinks to tide you over through the read-a-thon? I've got nothing special planned but there is a big bag of veggies cut up in my fridge that never got eaten on Thanksgiving. I'm sure I'll be gnawing on those throughout the week so they don't go to waste.

5. Where will you be doing your reading? Do you have a special spot picked out or will you be roaming around? I know where I won't be reading... I'll be steering clear of my bed. I've become a big fan of naps since becoming pregnant and I don't see that helping my reading goal any. I'll probably spend most of my time curled up on the couch in front of the fire with two little furry monsters nestled around me.

6. Will you be Tweeting, Instagramming, Vlogging, or Blogging through the event? If so, share your links with us. I sometimes tweet at @girlvsbooks. I'm not sure how much I will this time around.

message 4: by Rachel (new)

Rachel A. (abyssallibrarian) | 3239 comments 1. Tell us a little about yourself and why you decided to participate in the Read-a-Thon.
I'm Rachel, and over the past two years I've become a little obsessed with reading challenges. I also love video games/computer games, especially Pokemon, Minecraft, and anything Kirby or Super Mario related. I decided to participate in the read-a-thon because I had a lot of fun in the last two.

2. What books do you have in your "to be read" pile for the week?
Definitely the rest of Misery, This Is Where It Ends and Anna Dressed in Blood. If I have time for any others beyond that, I'll have to see what comes in from the library.

3. Do you have any goals for the read-a-thon (i.e. number of books, number of pages, number of hours, etc.)?
Not really. I just want to read as much as I can. My time has been pretty limited lately.

4. Have you made any meals, prepared any snacks, or stocked up on any drinks to tide you over through the read-a-thon?
No, I don't eat or drink while reading because I don't like the chance of getting my books dirty.

5. Where will you be doing your reading? Do you have a special spot picked out or will you be roaming around?
My room

6. Will you be Tweeting, Instagramming, Vlogging, or Blogging through the event? If so, share your links with us.
I have a blog that's still pretty new (). I will probably make some kind of post during the readathon but I don't know yet if it will be related.

I'm Elín, an Icelandic living in Sweden with my husband. Love reading, but haven't done as much of it lately as I would have liked. 2. What books do you have in your "to be read" pile for the week?
The Handmaid's Tale, Svartar fjaðrir (poems), and several more options depending on what my team needs and what I'm in the mood for.

1. Tell us a little about yourself and why you decided to participate in the Read-a-Thon.
I'm Laura, living in Ohio with my fiancé and our dog, a Cavalier King Charles Spaniel named Nicholas. I just started a new job as the therapist in a local middle school. My reading has really taken a hit since then so I'd love to use the read-a-thon as a way to catch up.

2. What books do you have in your "to be read" pile for the week?
The Gilded Years
A Mother's Reckoning: Living in the Aftermath of Tragedy
I Am Legend
Brain on Fire: My Month of Madness (audiobook)

3. Do you have any goals for the read-a-thon (i.e. number of books, number of pages, number of hours, etc.)?
I'd love to finish the books listed above and maybe start another audiobook. The more books the better!

4. Have you made any meals, prepared any snacks, or stocked up on any drinks to tide you over through the read-a-thon?
Not really. I'm not coordinated enough to do both at once :P

5. Where will you be doing your reading? Do you have a special spot picked out or will you be roaming around?
I really have trouble falling asleep while I read so I'd like to avoid my bed. I'm decorating the apartment for Christmas tonight so I will probably stick to our sectional in order to enjoy the tree.

6. Will you be Tweeting, Instagramming, Vlogging, or Blogging through the event? If so, share your links with us.
I will be using Litsy - LauraRenae

message 10: by Jody (new)

Jody (jodybell) | 3477 comments 1. Tell us a little about yourself and why you decided to participate in the Read-a-Thon.
I'm Jody, Australian, living in Switzerland with my little Spider (7 years old). I'm a photographer, and I love to travel. I really enjoyed the last read-a-thon with the group Bingo, and I'm looking forward to being part of the group challenges again.

2. What books do you have in your "to be read" pile for the week?
Ideally I'd like to finish Dead Souls, which I've been plodding away at for months now. And possibly Catch-22, which is my current AtY book. But I have pretty much gone off-piste with my reading now for the end of the year, so anything is possible.

3. Do you have any goals for the read-a-thon (i.e. number of books, number of pages, number of hours, etc.)?
Not really, but I guess I would like to finish at least one book!

4. Have you made any meals, prepared any snacks, or stocked up on any drinks to tide you over through the read-a-thon?
I have a cupboard full of tea, so that will do nicely. :)

5. Where will you be doing your reading? Do you have a special spot picked out or will you be roaming around?
In bed, or on the couch. Way too cold here now to be reading outdoors, sadly, which I loved doing last time around.

6. Will you be Tweeting, Instagramming, Vlogging, or Blogging through the event? If so, share your links with us.
No, I don't use social media for book stuff. I am on Litsy though, I think I'm MamaJody.

2. What books do you have in your "to be read" pile for the week? Honestly, I just want to finish The Nix! But if I could finish that, March: Book Two, and either The Underground Railroad or The Wicked Boy: The Mystery of a Victorian Child Murderer, I'd be thrilled.

SamZ (samwisezbrown) | 154 comments 1. Tell us a little about yourself and why you decided to participate in the Read-a-Thon.
My name is Sam and I live in the United States in Idaho. I work as a substitute teacher, so right now through approximately Valentine's Day I'm a 7th grade English teacher (and I love it). I have a puppy who wishes I read less so I could play with her more, a daughter who likes to read as much as I do, and a husband who has learned that commenting on having too many books results in the purchase of more bookshelves.

2. What books do you have in your "to be read" pile for the week?
Mostly AtY catch ups, so
Glitches (The Lunar Chronicles, #0.5) by Marissa Meyer Naked in Death (In Death, #1) by J.D. Robb The Absolutely True Diary of a Part-Time Indian by Sherman Alexie A Little Princess by Frances Hodgson Burnett Cat on a Hot Tin Roof by Tennessee Williams Champagne for One (Nero Wolfe, #31) by Rex Stout A Man Called Ove by Fredrik Backman The Queen's Army (The Lunar Chronicles, #1.5) by Marissa Meyer The Lies of Locke Lamora (Gentleman Bastard, #1) by Scott Lynch

3. Do you have any goals for the read-a-thon (i.e. number of books, number of pages, number of hours, etc.)?
Nothing specific. This is my first read-a-thon, so just to get some of my books knocked out and to have fun!

4. Have you made any meals, prepared any snacks, or stocked up on any drinks to tide you over through the read-a-thon?
Nope, but I forsee lots of Mtn. Dew and chocolate!

5. Where will you be doing your reading? Do you have a special spot picked out or will you be roaming around?
I read anywhere I can. But if I'm at home, the likelihood of a dog on my lap is very high!

6. Will you be Tweeting, Instagramming, Vlogging, or Blogging through the event? If so, share your links with us.
Nope, just posting here on GR!

Marta (gezemice) | 859 comments 1. Tell us a little about yourself and why you decided to participate in the Read-a-Thon.
I have been in the group for a while and really enjoyed the last readathon. I am also in a reading slump (seems a lot of people are having it), so I am hoping it will help.

2. What books do you have in your "to be read" pile for the week?
I am planning to finish Algorithms to Live By: The Computer Science of Human Decisions - this is my last ATY challenge book.
Also reading Anna Karenina and listening to the The Canterbury Tales, but I will not finish those - long and a lot left.
I am adding some shorter books to grab in the mean time:
We Should All Be Feminists, The Paul Street Boys, Through the Looking-Glass, and What Alice Found There. I might get into The Lies of Locke Lamora as well, since it is the BOTM!

3. Do you have any goals for the read-a-thon (i.e. number of books, number of pages, number of hours, etc.)?
Finish Algorithms, finish a couple shorter books and make progress on my longer books.

4. Have you made any meals, prepared any snacks, or stocked up on any drinks to tide you over through the read-a-thon?
No, I don't associate reading with eating.

5. Where will you be doing your reading? Do you have a special spot picked out or will you be roaming around?
I usually read in bed since I do most of my reading when I need to rest. I get tired a lot due to health issues.

6. Will you be Tweeting, Instagramming, Vlogging, or Blogging through the event? If so, share your links with us.
I am on Litsy - my user name is gezemice, for all other Litsy users. I am also going to start tagging my ATY reads with #aty and the readathon with #atyreadathon.

I have never participated in the Read-a-Thon but I could see the games and questionaries, and I wanted to participate so much... I didn't before because I am slow reader

2. What books do you have in your "to be read" pile for the week?
Sisters by Raina Telgemeier Boy Tales of Childhood by Roald Dahl and maybe The Last Unicorn by Peter S. Beagle and Japanese Fairy Book by Yei Theodora Ozaki

3. Do you have any goals for the read-a-thon (i.e. number of books, number of pages, number of hours, etc.)? Not really, maybe finish more than one book (excluding GNs, I know I can read many of them :S)

4. Have you made any meals, prepared any snacks, or stocked up on any drinks to tide you over through the read-a-thon? I wish, but I usually read riding the train or before to sleep, even in the read-a-thon, I don't thinkl I can change that, I just will try not to lose any of those moments .... and go to bed earlier so I can read more :)

5. Where will you be doing your reading? Do you have a special spot picked out or will you be roaming around? Roaming around

6. Will you be Tweeting, Instagramming, Vlogging, or Blogging through the event? If so, share your links with us.
No.

I'm Bec. I live in Australia and have 2 children, a boy 10 and a girl 7. My son has just been diagnosed with ASD so we have a whole new learning curve! I joined the read-a-thon as it's fun to do the challenges with others.

2. What books do you have in your "to be read" pile for the week?
I need to finish off the ATY books. I'm nearly done with The Shining by Stephen King then I've got Code Blue (Prescription for Trouble, #1) by Richard L. Mabry How Can I Talk If My Lips Don't Move? Inside My Autistic Mind by Tito Rajarshi Mukhopadhyay and The Poisoned Pilgrim (The Hangman's Daughter, #4) by Oliver Pötzsch I won't get them all done this week but lets see if I can do 1-2 at least!

3. Do you have any goals for the read-a-thon (i.e. number of books, number of pages, number of hours, etc.)?
Nope, just as much as I can

4. Have you made any meals, prepared any snacks, or stocked up on any drinks to tide you over through the read-a-thon?

5. Where will you be doing your reading? Do you have a special spot picked out or will you be roaming around? mainly to and from work on the train. Also in bed at night!

I've participated in the other read-a-thons and have enjoyed it, so why not do another one.

2. What books do you have in your "to be read" pile for the week?
I have a couple of Scandinavian books I'm reading at the moment: Mordere uden ansigt and æ. And I'm trying to finish Sense and Sensibility for the challenge.

3. Do you have any goals for the read-a-thon (i.e. number of books, number of pages, number of hours, etc.)?
No, just read as much as possible

4. Have you made any meals, prepared any snacks, or stocked up on any drinks to tide you over through the read-a-thon?
Well, I'm at work the first three days, and then we have things to do the other days, so I haven't really prepared anything

5. Where will you be doing your reading? Do you have a special spot picked out or will you be roaming around?
Mostly at home and then when there's time. I'm listening to an audiobook at work.

6. Will you be Tweeting, Instagramming, Vlogging, or Blogging through the event? If so, share your links with us
No, I don't think so. I'm on Instagram now, but don't think I'll use it for challenges.

Lieke | 697 comments 1. Tell us a little about yourself and why you decided to participate in the Read-a-Thon.
I'm from the Netherlands. The last Read-a-Thon was fun, I entered late because I'm in a bit of a slump. But it looked like to much fun to miss.

2. What books do you have in your "to be read" pile for the week?
I'm currently reading 4 books:
An audio (Matilda) I started yesterday and will finish tomorrow.
And a book (De wilde gave) I will finish today or tomorrow.
The other ones I'm not sure I will finish them (The Children's Book and De lijst van meneer Rosenblum).
I might start new books if the last two can't keep my attention.

3. Do you have any goals for the read-a-thon (i.e. number of books, number of pages, number of hours, etc.)?
Just enjoy my reading and try to help team Dolphin :)

4. Have you made any meals, prepared any snacks, or stocked up on any drinks to tide you over through the read-a-thon?
I have enough at home, but I should try to snack less :)

5. Where will you be doing your reading? Do you have a special spot picked out or will you be roaming around?
At home on the couch or in bed and my audio book in the car to and from work

6. Will you be Tweeting, Instagramming, Vlogging, or Blogging through the event? If so, share your links with us.
No

I've never met my reading goal. Even though I've set it to be pitifully easy, stuff gets in the way. This is my chance to FINALLY hit my goal of 25 books, hopefully more.

2. What books do you have in your "to be read" pile for the week?
Candy Corn Murder (Lucy Stone Mystery, #22) by Leslie Meier The Wonder by Emma Donoghue Comfort & Joy by Kristin Hannah The Rose & the Dagger (The Wrath & the Dawn, #2) by Renee Ahdieh Don't You Forget About Me (Gossip Girl, #11) by Cecily von Ziegesar Three Dark Crowns (Three Dark Crowns, #1) by Kendare Blake

3. Do you have any goals for the read-a-thon (i.e. number of books, number of pages, number of hours, etc.)?
My goal is to finish the individual challenge, and to help Team Sea Horse win!
4. Have you made any meals, prepared any snacks, or stocked up on any drinks to tide you over through the read-a-thon?
Got chocolate to tide me through

5. Where will you be doing your reading? Do you have a special spot picked out or will you be roaming around?
I've been reading all over the place. The library, coffee shops, my bed. haha

6. Will you be Tweeting, Instagramming, Vlogging, or Blogging through the event? If so, share your links with us.

I hadn't participated in any of the previous Read-a-Thons and they looked fun. But each time one would happen, I would already be a goodly number of pages into a huge book that I didn't want to set aside.

2. What books do you have in your "to be read" pile for the week?

I rarely plan that far ahead.

3. Do you have any goals for the read-a-thon (i.e. number of books, number of pages, number of hours, etc.)?

Nope. See: planning, above.

4. Have you made any meals, prepared any snacks, or stocked up on any drinks to tide you over through the read-a-thon?

Whoa, whoa now. You people are pretty into this thing eh? Hide out in a bunker? Feign an illness to get hospitalized? I have (most of) a 24 pack, but I bought that for Thanksgiving.

5. Where will you be doing your reading? Do you have a special spot picked out or will you be roaming around?

Anyway, anyhow, anywhere I choose.

6. Will you be Tweeting, Instagramming, Vlogging, or Blogging through the event? If so, share your links with us.

Lol. When I get the chance, I'm going to google some of those terms.

Lois Lane 1. I just joined the group, and this looks like so much fun that I wanted to take part! It's a great way to meet other members and get some books off my TBR pile.

2. I'm spending the month at my mother's house, so I'm sticking to the many, many unread books on my Kindle.

3. I got a bit of a late start, plus I do love thick books, so I'll be thrilled if I finish five books. (One down, four to go.)

4, Thanks to the wonder that is my mother, I get all my favorites without having to do the cooking! You haven't lived until you've tasted my mom's homemade brownies.

5. My bedroom. I can read in peace while Mom watches TV.

6. I keep wanting to start a blog, but I haven't found the time to do that yet, sadly. I don't do Twitter, Instagram, etc.
