Mike (mikekeating) | 242 comments I've been wondering, has anyone here named any of their dependents, whether they be two or four-legged, after sci-fi or fantasy characters? (Or authors, for that matter.)

In January of this year, the wife and I adopted a male kitten. We didn't know in advance that we were getting a boy and were leaning strongly towards Tasha after Tasha Yar from Trek for a girl (she rejected my suggestion of Pussy Galore from Goldfinger). We couldn't agree at all on a boy's name until inspiration hit me and I suggested Mister after Harry Dresden's cat. Actually naming him after a cat had an appeal to it, and we both have enjoyed the Dresden books, so that's what we wound up using.

I didn't know what I was in for. If I had known in hindsight what he would be like, I would have pushed for Loki. He is quite the mischief maker.

I had a cat named Tas after Tasselhoff Burrfoot from Dragonlance. And, my dog is Oberon. (He doesn't know that. He thinks he's Obie, which everyone assumes is a Star Wars reference. It's not.). Does the king of the fairies count? :)

All of my pets are named after characters in books I'm currently reading. Including our resident backyard squirrel Miller. I was attempting to read Leviathan Wakes at the time. DNF.

Emma (cat) was adopted during an Austen phase, Belle (cat) is Mirabelle from Shop Girl by Steve Martin and Mac (bird) is for some horrible UF book I was reading that I don't remember the title of. The other bird is fatty, but he's the Mr's so...

Alan Denham (alandenham) | 146 comments The dog (8 stones Bernese Mountain Dog) was known as 'Monster'. This was also used as a verb, to describe an enthusiastic welcome from him. This was survivable (just!)
We also, briefly, had a cat known as 'Gremlin'. That was a stray, found in the woods behind our house, and handed over to Cats Rescue after a few days because A) the name fitted all too well, but more importantly B) our older cat was provoked to violence on too many occasions.
The Rescue people told us they re-homed the little sod within 24 hours, and the new owners called it 'Princess'. Gods preserve them!

Silvana (silvaubrey) I used to have Bilbo, Pippin and Chewy (Chewbacca). All dogs. RIP.

Now I have Yoda.

Maybe Bob came along with the name?

I didn't have pets growing up (my mom didn't want anything else that poops), and the cat I have now came with my husband. BUT- I fully intend to do this with the next pet.

That would explain a great deal. ;)

Sabrina Flynn I named my daughter Bellatrix. But it wasn't specifically after the character. We just liked the name. Oddly, so many people have horribly mispronounced it. The most common is 'Bill-A-Trike'. It totally suits her though.

My other daughter's middle name is Wednesday. After Wednesday Adams. It suits her too. She is such a little 12 year-old goth girl.

Trice | 1 comments I have an orange and white (gold-ish?) female cat I named Faranth from Anne McCaffrey's Pern books
It was semi-inspired by a friend's comment when Faranth first found her way into my apartment (she was a stray kitten), that she sounded like a baby dragon when she meowed (vet said she had a cold at the time). Queen dragon definitely fits her personality.

those names are awesome!

message 10: by Jenn (new)

Jenn (ace-geek) Do virtual pets count? In Fable 3, your character has a dog that you can name. I named mine Hobbit.

message 11: by Sabrina (new)

Sabrina Flynn Thanks, Silvana. I like different kind of names for kids. There are a ton of really cool ones that have fallen out of disuse. And oh! I had a reader name her son after my detective. His name is Atticus Riot. That was a surprising honor.

Deborah (goodreadscomdeborah_jay) | 24 comments I have a horse named Merlin - he is an absolute wizard (!)performer (international dressage horse), and a Jack Russell called Frodo, because he's small, with pointed ears and hairy feet.
We used to have a standard bulldog called Gimli - picture the wrinkled face...

message 14: by Sabrina (new)

Sabrina Flynn Thanks, Mike! And Deborah, those are awesome names. I love Gimli for a bulldog, lol.

Kivrin | 542 comments My oldest is named Caleb for the little boy in "American Gothic"--a short-lived but cool little horror show that was on t.v. in 1995/96. In the show, he was the son of the devil!! But he had a lovely southern accent! That show was truly creepy ("Someone's at the door.") before it got stupid.

Silvana (silvaubrey) Just remember a friend of mine named her motorbike Bill, Sam's pony from LOTR.

LOTR seems to be a popular choice..If I have a horse I will name him/her Asfaloth just so I could channel Glorfindel and say 'Noro lim Asfaloth, noro lim!'

message 17: by Mike (new)

Mike (mikekeating) | 242 comments Not quite SF & F, but still literary: our vet has for a few months now had a lost cat notice posted for Moriarty. (The irony that Moriarty has escaped wasn't unnoticed by either of us.)

message 18: by Sabrina (new)

Sabrina Flynn That is an awesome name for a cat!

message 19: by Jon (new)

Jon | 4 comments I have a green cat (I noticed he was green one day I was blind about it because cats are not supposed to be green. he is a forest ocicat that seems to be golden and brown with spots and circles until you see he is green) named Radagast.

message 20: by Mike (new)

Mike (mikekeating) | 242 comments So tonight we went to a shelter to look at cats. One of them we really liked was a kitten the shelter people had named Bella. We had gone in planning to choose our own name, but this seemed just about perfect as it reminded us of the horse in Wheel of Time (despite not being human or sentient or somesuch, one of the fans' most beloved characters). All we had to do was drop one L, and we went home with Bela.

For a minute there I thought you were going with Twilight. :)

Gack. I'd never. One of the most commonly heard comments in the WoT community is "our Bela is better than their Bella." ;)

M.D. (mdwhite) | 8 comments We've got two ragdoll cats (sisters) named Kaylee and River. I had suggested their names as a joke but they ended up working out far better than I had imagined.

Our dog is called Kaylee too.

My wife was stumped for names and after throwing out some normal ones I branched into various SF&F sources and she stopped me on this one.

(Her first comment was "I like that one, we should save that for if we have a daughter", until I explained the source as I knew she didn't want literary sourced names for them.)

Actually, her alias on IRC and various other services is Renie - also sourced by me as I was reading Tad Williams at the time.

NekroRider | 465 comments Not directly fantasy, but my cat is called Tapio after the Finnish god :P

message 26: by Oganalp (new)

Oganalp Canatan | 2 comments One of my cats is called "Kerrigan", named after the infamous Kerrigan of Starcraft.

Sweet goodness, that cat has a wonderful name.

message 28: by Patricia (new)

Patricia I named my big main coon cat Yoda due to his very large ears. He knew his name and would come when called. If he felt like it. He taught me many things about relationships and miss him dearly I do.

message 29: by Silvana (new)

Silvana (silvaubrey) My mom's dog Yoda just gave birth to Fisto, Obi and Leia.
Leia was supposed to be named Snips but it is too hard for my mom to pronounce *sigh

Fantastic names, I might steal Kaylee. Should have thought of Firefly characters. Mal, Jayne and Zoe are also good & easy names.

Expelliosa | 0 comments I have a wiener dog that chewed on EVERYTHING so I named him Chewy. When I told my dad he went "yeah! Chewbacca!" So that's his name now.

message 32: by Martin (new)

Martin O' | 31 comments Our Jack Russell went through a few name changes as a pup but settled on Toby which has been further extended to become Toby Wan Kenobi. Oddly he now bears a strong resemblance to Sir Alec Guinness!
