2017 Buddy Reads - Introduction & Sign Up

I am quite excited about the Serial Reader Challenge as I am a huge fan of series! I thought it might be fun to tackle one or more series as Buddy Reads for 2017. Here’s a rough idea of how it would work.
*Members would post the series they would like to read here.
*We will set up a poll with all of the suggestions and everyone can vote for their favorite.
*Once the results are in, we will start with the series in the top position. We will read each book in the series, in order, one month at a time and discuss each book as a Buddy Read. (If you have already read one or more books in the series, you can still join in the discussion!)
*If there are many books in that series, we could have a year of Buddy Reads. If there are fewer books in the series, we can tackle another one from our poll when we finish the first series.
I have provided an example below. Please post here if you are interested and post a series you would like to read in 2017. Remember, anything read as a part of this Series Buddy Reads can count towards the Serial Reader Challenge too!
EXAMPLE:
The Temeraire Series by Naomi Novik wins the poll. There is a Buddy Read set up for each book as follows.
January His Majesty’s Dragon
February Throne of Jade
March Black Powder War
April Empire of Ivory
May Victory of Eagles
June Tongue of Serpents
July Crucible of Gold
August Blood of Tyrants
September League of Dragons
The Outlander Series came in second but it is too long to finish in 2017. Stephen King’s Bill Hodges Trilogy came in third and only has three books so we finish out the year as follows.
October Mr. Mercedes
November Finders Keepers
December End of Watch

You never know! And this is a large group with varied interests! List a series or two you are going to read and see what happens!

Ender's Game
Lorien Legacies
Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy
The Gateway Trilogy - E E Holmes
The Divergent series
Daughter of Smoke and Bone series
Mortal Instruments
Dorothy Must Die
Patrick Hedstrom series - Camilla Lackberg
The Winner's trilogy - Marie Rutkoski
Peter Grant series - Ben Aaronovitch
It would be interesting to buddy read a series.

Some of the runners up in the group read poll might be good to set up as buddy reads. For example in December the second and third books both had over 20 votes and in October the second and third had 29 and 30 votes respectively. So I would have thought there might be a few people interested in buddy reads maybe?

Plainsong

Eventide
Benediction
Miss Peregrine’s Peculiar Children
Miss Peregrine’s Home for Peculiar Children
Hollow City
Library of Souls
Tales of the Peculiar

Allegiant
I also plan to start the following series. If folks are interested, I might work my way through the rest!
Lunar Chronicles
Artemis Fowl
The Golden Compass
The Great Library

We have a fair amount of flexibility here. What do other folks think?

I think that is a great idea! What I will do is post a list of the second and third place books here and if two or more readers are interested, we will start a buddy read!

We both have Divergent on our list and I am only one book into the Mortal Instrument series. When were you thinking of tackling Divergent?

Probably the most daunting series on my list is The Dark Tower series. A buddy read would be great for me.

I actually thought about suggesting The Dark Tower series since I've been wanting to re-read it from the beginning. The only one I haven't read yet is The Wind Through the Keyhole. Since that one was written later but falls in the middle of the timeline of the other books, I thought I would just read them all again, but I haven't had the time to do that yet! Anyway, I would be interested in doing a buddy read with you!

Great! The friend who recommended it suggested I read 1-7 and then go back for the 1/2 books....what do you think?

I think it would be great to have lots of series buddy reads going on. I think a group series read would also be good for everyone to vote on!

I have a plan of books I'm going to read over the year but it is totally flexible. I can start Divergent any time that suits.

Catherine and I would like to read the Dark Tower series starting in January.
I'm up for reading Plainsong with you (my local book group is reading book 1 in February).
I'd like to join in reading An Untamed State in January.
Thanks,
Lynn

Cassandra, I have The Light Between Oceans in my TBR. However, I have two exams in January so am not sure I have the time to truly dedicate myself to a buddy read :( If you could wait on it until February or at a later time, I'd most definitely be interested in reading it as a buddy read :)

Lynn, are you planning on reading one Dark Tower book each month? If so, I'd love to jump in for The Waste Lands in March.

I think that is what we are planning, Cassandra, but Lynn can verify that for sure.

I'm flexible about when we start, but would like to read a book a month. If we can begin in January, March will be book 3. It would be great if you could join us for one (or more).

Hi Mary Pat,
Does this Series Buddy Read replace the normal buddy read system?

I am targeting to read the Samaria Series by Sharon Shinn.

I am going to start in January with the first book "Archangel" I am on an theme of "angels" for a couple of months now as I read my way through the Guild Hunter series by Nalini Singh.
So how did I find this new series you ask? why Little Free Library of course..go figure! I therefore have books one and three in paperback but still have to source books 2, 4 and 5...likely epub I suspect..?
Anyone want to join me?

I'm glad to hear this as I have a number of books lined up for next year because of an English course I'll be starting in February. I have listed them below so if anyone would like to read them with me then that would be great. I'm open to time. The only one that I really need to have read before the course starts in February is The Life and Opinions of Tristram Shandy, Gentleman
1. Girt: The Unauthorised History of Australia
2. Rush Oh!
3. Mateship: A Very Australian History
4. The Sound
5. The Promise
6. The Golden Age
7. Southern Edge: Three Stories in Verse
8. The Yellow Birds
9. Lost & Found
10. The Real Matilda
11. The Millstone
12. The Scarlet Letter
13. A Portrait of the Artist as a Young Man
14. The Life and Opinions of Tristram Shandy, Gentleman
15. King Lear
16. Emma

terrific! so January we start Archangel and share thoughts as we go along?

I'd be interested in the Temeraire series, but I'm getting kind of full on books for January. I might be able to shift some things around, though. When were you hoping to start, M?

March will be fine Mindy. Thanks.

I would love to!!
Is anyone interested in reading The Book Thief in January?

Me too Amanda! I haven't read it in years, I'm excited!

I'm already reading the Lunar chronicles with a Å·±¦ÓéÀÖ friend I met months ago. I really hope you start it! It's a fantastic series so far, and it was very popular amongst the group in 2016.
I have JUST Divergent (I'm not ready to take on books 2 and 3 yet) on my Seriel Challenge list. I'd love to join in with you and any other people who are interested. :)

I'm nominating Chocolat by Joanne Harris.
Chocolate was mentioned in the February Group Read Nomination, however it has already been a GR.
February's theme will be 'Earth'. I'm not sure is the person (Leslie) would want it in Februarystill, but this book is kind of a winter to spring type of time frame. I think, I can't really remember. Anyway! So maybe in March if enough people vote for this book?

Buddy Reads are a great way for members to share their thoughts and ideas about the books they read! Here is how it works!
*Nominate a book for a buddy read by posting the title and the month you want to read it in this thread.
*If you see a book nominated that you want to read, post your interest and the title in this thread.
*As long as two or more people are interested in reading the same book in the same month, I will create a thread for discussion.
*Each Buddy Reads thread will include a list of participants and a suggested number of pages per week. Usually this is the number of pages divided by the four weeks in a month. Longer books, however, can be spread out over more than one month.
*The breakdown is only a suggestion and the participants can read at the pace they choose. We do ask participants to mark spoilers appropriately so that the book’s contents are not revealed to someone who is not as far along as others is the group.
NOTE: We are going to try something new this year a Series Buddy Read! Check out the details below!
