Hey Ashley, sorry for late reply. It just wasn't my cup of tea. I'm not a fan of stream of consciousness style.

Petra | 1319 comments Ashley, I hope you like The Sound and the Fury. It's a favorite of mine.
I also enjoyed As I Lay Dying but TS&TF beats all. Those are the only 2 Faulkner books I've read but I'm a fan.

To add the link, click on "add book/author" above the comment box. Enter the book title and click "search". Find the book you want from the list and click on "add".
Hope that helps.

madrano | 22113 comments Ashley, i haven't read Sound & Fury and didn't know it was Stream of. Some of those can be so good but others (Iesser talents, perhaps?) do not pull it off. I hope you enjoy it when you settle down with it this summer.

Jade, thanks for the info on the graphic (or not) status.

Jill Hutchinson (bucs1960) I read lots of book that I really liked this past year so it would be hard to pick just a few.. But one book I detested, absolutely hated and I am in the minority since there were really good reviews. It was distasteful and I found out later that the author's parents sued him and won the case. Good for them. It was:

Running with Scissors by Augusten Burroughs Running with Scissors by Augusten Burroughs

madrano | 22113 comments I remember hearing about the parents suing but didn't know they won. I didn't read the book, however, as it didn't call to me. Jill, your comments make me feel as though i made the correct choice for me. I saw the movie and it, too, made me feel as though i didn't miss much.

:) I read it years ago. It's before I was on GR so I don't know what date. I know I enjoyed it and so I read a few other books by him.

Not every book fits every person or even that person's mood at a particular time.

If we all liked the same things, it would be a dull world, Alias :>). I have several friends that like the book but it just didn't suit me.

I hated Running with Scissors too

madrano | 22113 comments Welcome to the group, Megan Elizabeth. And thanks for that terrific looking series on library spies--The Invisible Library by Genevieve Cogman. The humor sounds as though it will be akin to Jasper Fforde novels which feature Thursday Next, a woman who can jump into novels of the past.

The novels are definitely similar in a "books about books" kinda way. But The Invisible Library was darker with more steampunk and fairy tale elements. While The Eyre Affair was more lighthearted, from what I can remember.

madrano | 22113 comments Fforde's books are definitely lighthearted. We actually managed to hear him speak on a book tour in Portland, Oregon. What a funny guy. Meanwhile, i like the way you described Cogman's series, making more interested. Thanks.

Another similar series I started reading in 2016 is The Great Library by Rachel Caine! The first one is Ink and Bone.

I loved Ink and Bone. It's important to know what can happen if there's ever a monopoly on books.

madrano | 22113 comments Thanks for the title & endorsement, Megan Elizabeth & Shomeret. I find these sort of books a pleasure to read. Is there an entire sub-genre of books about books &/or libraries &/or bookstores? It almost seems as though there could be.

message 67: by Megan (new)

Megan | 9 comments There's a genre page for books about books! It's definitely one of my favorite genres :)

message 68: by madrano (new)

madrano | 22113 comments Perfect! Thanks, Megan Elizabeth. I also clicked on the thread with 89 titles, which covered some i was surprised to see missing from the first list. (Older ones by Christopher Morley.)

Great sub-genre list. I am currently reading 84, Charing Cross Road, which is included in that group. :-) Well, I also just found a few more books to add to my tbr.

Alias Reader (aliasreader) | 27437 comments Lisa Ann, I 'm so glad to see you enjoyed the Boys in the Boat. I purchased it for my Kindle about a year ago but have not read it yet.

I enjoyed West with the Night, too !

message 72: by [deleted user] (last edited Jan 28, 2017 08:15PM) (new)

I did the same and bought the kindle version but let it sit there for over a year. Somehow, I thought I wouldn't like it despite the high ratings. Well, I do hope you enjoy The Boys in the Boat: Nine Americans and Their Epic Quest for Gold at the 1936 Berlin Olympics, as much as I did.

message 73: by madrano (new)

madrano | 22113 comments Lisa Ann, i hope you enjoyHelene Hanff's book as much as i did. Indeed, i went on to read two more by her--The Duchess of Bloomsbury Street and Q's Legacy. Neither was as good as 84 but her personality shines through both.

Petra | 1319 comments Ashley, I read ±á´Ç°ù°ù´Ç°ù²õ³Ùö°ù awhile back and thought the same as you. It was surprisingly entertaining and fun.

Your post reminded me of a sign i saw today at a protest rally. "I've seen better cabinets at Ikea." LOL--no matter your party, i think that was a clever sign.

You've introduced me to some neat titles & ideas. Thanks, Ashley.

Alias Reader (aliasreader) | 27437 comments I saw that one. Clever sign.
