I thought with the new year, I would start a new topic of lists.

It seems that many of us love historical fiction and here is a list of books that are coming out this year. I plan on putting on my wish list.

Story (storyheart) I can see you choosing Minds of Winter as your 'snow' read for summer.

That looks like a good one when temps are hitting 100.

I always like to read a wintertime book in the summer. It cools me down.

Others that look interesting are Idaho, The Second Mrs. Hockaday, We Were the Lucky Ones, The Dry, The Shadow Land, and Since We Fell

I sometimes feel a sense of relief when I go through a list and don't add tons of books. Like I dodged a bullet.

Nancy Pearl is a well known reviewer and reader. Here is a recent list of hers (short only 6, but she makes me want to read each)

I just logged on to post the same list. I put Broken Verses (Pakistani novel) and A Twist of the Knife (60 year old main character) on the TBR although several others looked quite good.

I may just have discovered my new favourite literary prize. A new prize launched in the UK aimed specifically at innovative fiction from small presses and with a crowd-funded prize.

They are holding a literary raffle to help fund the prize which is well worth supporting, particularly for anyone UK based:

The shortlist was announced yesterday see article in The Guardian and looks impressive.

Two I've read and really enjoyed: the Goldsmiths winner Solar Bones, the Goldsmith and Giller shortlisted Martin John

and two new to me:
Born on a Tuesday and Forbidden Line

also a strong-looking short-story list.

Nice list! I added Solar Bones and Martin John to the TBR (a little unsure about Martin John, however). I was surprised to see that Born on a Tuesday was already on my TBR but recognized the plot line once I started reading the description.

I really like the idea of an alternative to breaking through the 'paper' barrier or self-publishing, alone. This is truly an amazing era to be alive, in!!

We are stepping back to 2016, but I liked this list because it included some that I'd overlooked or hadn't heard of. I added 5 to my wish/radar list and if we end up with the quirky tag on PBT, I might actually read one of them.

Ha! I can't imagine having in similarities of taste if he even reads.

Our reading tastes seem to be quite similar. I've either read or plan to read all of them. I didn't have Song of Solomon on the TBR but did have 2 other Morrison books on my list and have already read a couple.

I've only checked out the first half.

The Mare has been on my TBR for a few years so wondering if it was just released in England? Also of interest to me is Stay With Me, and possibly Midwinter. It doesn't look like any Crossroaders have read them.

The Mare is one that has been on my radar.

There is a list of these on Å·±¦ÓéÀÖ here:
/list/show/1...

Someone on PBT gave a good review to The Lesser Bohemians. I thought Stay With Me sounded good to me, as well.

message 37: by Denizen (new)

Denizen (den13) | 566 comments The Power was another one that I thought I mentioned before but must not have added correctly.

McBride's last book - A Girl Is a Half-formed Thing - sounded awful to me so have formed a totally uninformed bias against her. I'll wait for more feedback;-)

Lesley Moseley | 717 comments It fits with my experiences of OZ books. Only No 1 and No 10 did I enjoy.

Records of book sales in Australia have only been collected by Nielsen BookScan since 2002.

These are the bestselling Australian novels since 2002:

1. The Book Thief by Markus Zusak - Picador
2. The Husband's Secret by Liane Moriarty - Pan
3. Whitethorn by Bryce Courtenay - Viking
4. Brother Fish by Bryce Courtenay - Viking
5. The Persimmon Tree by Bryce Courtenay - Viking
6. The Narrow Road to the Deep North by Richard Flanagan - Vintage
7. Jack of Diamonds by Bryce Courtenay - Viking
8. Sylvia by Bryce Courtenay - Viking
9. Matthew Flinders' Cat by Bryce Courtenay - Viking
10. The Rosie Project by Graeme Simsion - Text Publishing

I'm with you on 1 and 10 but also loved The Narrow Road to the Deep North. I liked The Husband's Secret - thought it was an enjoyable lighter read.

I'm really surprised at how many books by Bryce Courtenay are on the list. I don't recall hearing anything about him since The Power of One.

I read the one about his son out of a kind of ex-pat 'duty'. Heartwrenching, but repetitious. April Fool's Day.

I found the others too 'airport' , for me. However, those readers must also be book buyers, given the results.

HAAA!! This must only be what THEY have sold, given that ABC Book Club said Lianne Moriaty had sold 6,000,000 books. Will research this info.

The only two that piqued my interest were Celine which is already on my TBR and Exit West. I still have Hamad's last book How to Get Filthy Rich in Rising Asia on my TBR so might try to read that intstead of Exit West since it currently has holds at the library. A few interested me enough that I read a few reviews which dissuaded me from adding them.

BnB, you've read both the Heller and Hamad?
