Ken (ogi8745) | 1411 comments Wasnt into Guy Kays book, spent a few days in book stores looking for something to read then spend a few hours on New Years looking at my own shelves and decided on this

I am finishing up Escape from Hell and next up is the book for our January Deverry read.

message 4: by Juliana (new)

Juliana I'm currently reading The Mongoliad: Book One, and hope to get through The Mongoliad: Book Two this month, plus Nexus and Crux by Ramez Naam

I absolutely adore Blindsight. Its the type of thing that's right up my alley.

I seem to be unable to decide what I want to read next, jumped back and forth a number of times, and just ended up listening to THHGTTG radio series for the 15th billion time. :)

Jim Mcclanahan (clovis-man) | 485 comments Going through All The Traps Of Earth by Clifford Simak story by story. Great nostalgia and some pretty good writing as well.

The group read Blindsight some years back - you should poke around our old Previous Books of the Month threads to find it. Super weird book.

Interested in your thoughts about The Mongolian. I have it but have not read it.

I dont read anything about a book till I am done, Will take a trip down past books when I am done though

Christine | 636 comments I just finished Wrath: The Faithful and the Fallen 4; pretty bloody but at least the story is complete. I do recommend this book (but really prefer less bloody stories).
Now I think I'll try The Sunlight Pilgrims

message 11: by Ken (new)

Ken (ogi8745) | 1411 comments Well that didnt turn out well
I just wasnt into Blindsight. I was reading but not..I was going back
to reread stuff I jut read.
I liked it, it was good but my mind wasnt into it

Started something else
Between Their Worlds

message 12: by Joey (new)

Joey Anderson | 45 comments I am currently reading Vacuum Diagrams and Ancillary Justice. Both are quite interesting, and I would recommend them.

I just discovered Stephen Baxter (Raft), and I like how he blends the issue of how science can solve the problem of what faces the characters, but what becomes the obstacle to the science is the age-hold human conflict of class warfare. No matter how good the science becomes, the human dilemma must still be solved.

Christine | 636 comments Couldn't get into The Sunlight Pilgrims so abandoned it for All Good Children

I finished Escape from Hell. It is more of an ideas book than a character book, although the characters are used to explore the ideas. I thought it was OK. Next up is our January Deverry book.

message 15: by Lindsey (new)

Lindsey | 415 comments Hi all! I've been quiet for a bit (IRL stuff) but am trying to pick back up with my reading. I had a pretty solid 2016 until the last 3 months but January seems to be picking up.

This month I've read Child of a Hidden Sea, which was a pleasant surprise, and Den of Wolves, which was a seriously solid ending to a good series. I just finished up The Past Through Tomorrow, which I started last year. It was pretty typical Heinlein... big ideas, cool science and "history" extrapolation, and no female character agency worth mentioning.

I'm hoping to finish one more book this month. Not sure if I'm going to finish off my Heinlein TBRs with Revolt in 2100/Methuselah's Children (which might be an easy win, since Methuselah's Children is in the collection I just read) or start tackling my small stack of Christmas presents.

Joey wrote: "I just discovered Stephen Baxter..."

I found Stephen Baxter in his collaborations with Arthur Clarke (which I highly recommend, especially Light of Other Days). Always wanted to get around to some of his standalone work.

I wrapped up the Deverry book, The Fire Dragon and then zipped through Rise of Empire. I throughly enjoyed them both and found the second book in The Riyria Revelations to be more complex than the first, while retaining the occasional wit and dry humor. Next I will be returning to the Saga of Recluce with Colors of Chaos.

message 17: by Lulu (new)

Lulu (robotwitch) | 65 comments This month, counting only my SFF, I've read The Handmaid's Tale which was just as incredible as everyone suggests it is. I cannot believe it took me this long to read, but I loved every single word, and it's going to stick with me for a very long time now.

I just finished up Swordspoint which was an utter delight, and was a nice refreshing palate cleanser. Funny, fun and stuffed full of the things a good fantasy of manners make.

I'm going to try Ninefox Gambit on audio now, but I'm not sure how i'll go.

Silvana (silvaubrey) 20% into Seveneves by Neal Stephenson. Lots of info dumps, lack of plot or character development.

sounds pretty typical for Stephenson...his worldbuilding is amazing but he has some flaws too. I haven't read this one yet.

I finished The Fire Dragon last night for the Deverry read. Not sure what's up next!

Until now I've just read Snow Crash. But I finished Seveneves recently and enjoyed it a great deal. I did get a little irritated at some of his characterizations, but in the end they contributed greatly to the whole of this immense saga. I would suggest sticking it out.

message 21: by Silvana (new)

Silvana (silvaubrey) Thanks, Shel and Jim. I will try. So far it has not been annoying, just hard to keep up with pages and pages of technobabbles. So it will take longer time than usual to finish it.

In the meantime, I am continuing the Dagger and the Coin series with The King's Blood.

The infodumps in this one are tough, there are parts where he goes into Orbital Mechanics which was way over my head. If you can get through that the characters do come.
It's not one of his best but the ideas in the book are amazing

message 23: by Ken (new)

Ken (ogi8745) | 1411 comments Just finished a Noble Dead book, Between their Worlds. Not bad, much better that the Wynn-centric books. My only complaint is there are some things that happened off screen are not explained
and we are left waiting for the next books to find out they whys

Started a biography, Marcus Agrippa: Right-hand Man of Caesar Augustus
I have a penchant for Roman history.

I've just started The Rook, and though I'm not very far into it it's grabbed me right away and I can't wait to get back to it tonight :)

I remember it as a strange book also, especially the footnotes, which linked all the invented stuff to real scientific research. Strange, for a book which includes, amngst many other oddities, a vampire spaceship captain.

Sorry you gave up on it, but the main thing to it was the inculsion of those footnotes, at least to me.

I am going to try it again.
