Emma | 757 comments I've just chosen 2 cards at random, just want to plan a little. Like I said before it should be really easy for me to find books to go for any of the cards, so I can easily swap if needed. Brianna are you wanting to choose two as well. Sarah hasn't commented at all. Gonna see if I can find her profile and message her in a few days if she still not commented.

Sarah | 180 comments Hello friends! Apparently I am late to the game (somehow missed this thread while using the app!). I'm Sarah from Central Florida in the USA. This is my first time doing this and I'm super excited to participate!

Sarah | 180 comments Emma wrote: "I am up for the first hand or two being claimed, Means we can all start as soon as we can, after the challenge starts. There is the same amount of us as cards in each hand so why don't we take one ..."

If they are still available, I can take 4 for hand one and either 4 or 2 for hand two, although I have so many books on my tbr list that I'm totally flexible if you need a different card completed!

Melissa | 1347 comments Hi Sarah! It's ok - I almost missed it too :)

Emma - looks great. I can't wait to get started!

message 56: by Emma (new)

Emma | 757 comments I know me too :)

message 57: by Sarah (new)

Sarah | 180 comments Quick question... can any books read starting Feb 1 count towards the challenge? For example... I have my two numbers for round one and two, but say I read another book in addition (which will probably end up happening). Could it be applied towards a later round, or would it just not count?

message 58: by Camilla (new)

Camilla | 1251 comments So, do you ladies have many books to finish before the end of January?

I'm currently in the middle of two audiobooks, Death Comes to Pemberley that I'm listening to in the car during commute (utterly boring book, glad to finish it tomorrow) and Unbroken: A World War II Story of Survival, Resilience, and Redemption that I'm listening on my phone (not much better, I really don't like the MC; will finish during weekend). Two library books, The Collector of Hearts: New Tales of the Grotesque and MaddAddam, both of which are a bit of slow reads, but will finish before the challenge starts, and additionally started yesterday The Third Time Travel MEGAPACK : 18 Classic Trips Through Time on my Kindle, shouldn't take too long either.

message 59: by Emma (new)

Emma | 757 comments Sarah, there is 13 hands for the month of Feb, I have only allocated the first two hands so far, after that the plan is to allow people to choose a book at a time and just keep going until all the books are filled or it's the end of the month, whichever comes first. So yes it will count, there's just no point allocating for them all, some people read more books than others and things get in the way.

Does that make sense? Does it answer your question?

message 60: by Emma (new)

Emma | 757 comments I currently trying to finish rereading the HP series, on book 6, so should manage and if I have time I would like to finish Stardust by Neil Gaiman.

message 61: by Emma (new)

Emma | 757 comments I have started filling in the table, if you know what you are going to be reading please let me know. Preferably before 1st Feb. Don't worry you can change your mind, just let me know :)

message 62: by Camilla (new)

Camilla | 1251 comments The HP series is excellent for challenges, as there is a load of characters.

message 63: by Emma (new)

Emma | 757 comments Ye, but as far as I am aware we are not allowed Rereads, hence why I am reading it before. :)

message 64: by Shaw (new)

Shaw | 916 comments So once it's February and we have finished the books on the list do we just message you and let you know we're done?

message 65: by Emma (new)

Emma | 757 comments Once you have finished the two you have already claimed, you can make a start on the other hands, you just leave a message here and let me know which one you fancy. I will assign it to you. Then once you've finished it you let me know. Then we keep going that way until they are all taken. Make sense?

Has everyone had a look at the spreadsheet?

message 66: by Emma (new)

Emma | 757 comments Sorry if I am not explaining it very well. I hope it makes sense. Please let me know if it doesn't make sense, I will try again. :)

message 67: by Shaw (new)

Shaw | 916 comments Ok-that does make sense. So no countdown is needed-5 pages to go, 4 pages to go...lol

message 68: by Emma (last edited Jan 26, 2017 11:13AM) (new)

Emma | 757 comments no, but if you are taking longer than expected an update as to how you are getting on would be good. I do need to know each time you finish a book.

message 69: by Melissa (new)

Melissa | 1347 comments Makes perfect sense :)

I will be reading Flat Water Tuesday for my '4'. Not sure about the '2' yet - I'm waiting to see what comes in from the library next. I'll let you know!

Emma | 757 comments That's cool, thanks for letting me know.

Camilla | 1251 comments Emma wrote: "Ye, but as far as I am aware we are not allowed Rereads, hence why I am reading it before. :)"

Rereads are okay if >6 months since previous read.

message 72: by Emma (new)

Emma | 757 comments Ah, that's great thank you :) Very glad you are on my team. There's a series tthat I love that I have been wanting to reread for a while. Been a year or two since I read it so might use it in the challenge :)

message 73: by Camilla (new)

Camilla | 1251 comments Is everybody reading like mad to complete their books before the start of the challenge or do you have anything special planned for this weekend? Sorry to say, nothing especially nice in sight here, just some normal grocery shopping and cleaning. My hair is sooo outgrown, I should make an appointment to have it cut, but will probably not get one for this weekend anymore. Oh, just remembered we're invited to the birthday party of our godson on Sunday afternoon, he's 14 now. Impossible to come up with a gift, so we'll just give some money.
Have a relaxing weekend! UNO fun starts on Wednesday.

Yes I'm over here listening to audio books while playing the Sims 4. I have a few things I needed to get caught up on for my Sims blog. So the audio book versions are helping right now.

I'm fine. I knew I was going to be in the middle of moving right before the beginning of the challenge, so the last 2 cards that weren't picked is fine with me. I'm real flexible with my reading.

message 76: by Brianna (new)

Brianna Andreda | 121 comments For the reverse card, I'll read Scarlet since I've been meaning to get to this and Catherine has already read it

For the wild draw 4, I'll read The Maze Runner

message 77: by Shaw (new)

Shaw | 916 comments I'm trying to finish mine but things like sleep and food and my pesky job just keep getting in the way.

message 78: by Sarah (new)

Sarah | 180 comments Camilla wrote: "Is everybody reading like mad to complete their books before the start of the challenge or do you have anything special planned for this weekend? Sorry to say, nothing especially nice in sight here..."

I've actually gotten to the end of everything I've started reading, except for an audiobook I listen to on my way to work. I'm actually at a bit of a loss now... start a new book and read like mad to finish it before Feb 1 or just not read between now and Wednesday. Neither sounds like an exceptionally promising idea!

message 79: by Sarah (new)

Sarah | 180 comments I'm going to read Frostblood for my first 4. My second 4 will probably be The Magician King (set in Fillory), but that might change. Also, I'm going to be putting my Uno books in the shelf 'Uno 2017,' which is different that what I had originally listed.

message 80: by Camilla (new)

Camilla | 1251 comments Ah, that reminds me I should read the third book in the series, The Magician's Land. How did you like the first one, Sarah?

message 81: by Sarah (new)

Sarah | 180 comments Camilla wrote: "Ah, that reminds me I should read the third book in the series, The Magician's Land. How did you like the first one, Sarah?"

I have mixed feelings about the first one. I saw the tv show first, so I couldn't help noticing the extreme differences between the two. While I liked that the book went much more into the details of their magical learning, and spread it out over a much longer time, I found Quentin to be a bit insufferable. He's so unenthusiastic about everything!

That being said, I am curious to see where the story progresses in book 2! How did you like book 1?

message 82: by Camilla (new)

Camilla | 1251 comments I really liked the first one, gave it four stars, which is a very high rating from me. The second one was a bit less interesting, only three stars. Yes, I agree about your opinion of Quentin, not the most likeable person.

message 83: by Brianna (new)

Brianna Andreda | 121 comments Anyone reading at the moment? If you are, what are you reading? I'm listening to an audiobook, Shatter Me by Tahereh Mafi

message 84: by Camilla (new)

Camilla | 1251 comments Brianna wrote: "I'm listening to an audiobook, Shatter Me by Tahereh Mafi"

How are you liking it, Brianna? It's on my TBR list as well, just haven't gotten around to it yet.

message 85: by Cat (new)

Cat (cat_uk) | 2147 comments I just finished From Hell, which is about as dense and layered and erudite as you'd expect an Alan Moore novel to be. To start with I was floundering - I'm not a Ripper fan, so wasn't familiar with the various theories, but once I found the appendix with commentary and sources I was flying!

It's very very good, though graphic about the violence and sex at times (warranted, I think, being about someone who killed and eviscerated women prostitutes)

message 86: by Emma (new)

Emma | 757 comments I am currently rereading the last in the HP series, got 2 other books started, hoping to finish them all before challenge but highly doubt it.

message 87: by Emma (new)

Emma | 757 comments Can anyone who has not let me know what they are reading for hand 1 please let me know asap.

message 88: by Cat (new)

Cat (cat_uk) | 2147 comments Hi Emma, I'm not 100% on what I'll read, but I know that I have to meet the TWO criteria (Two in title / 2nd in series / T name/location etc)

I saw somewhere that we can choose or not whether to count "The" as the first word, right - which makes T title super easy.

Promise I'll let you know when I start & what I decide. Sorry for being so annoying - it's been an odd few days chez moi!

message 89: by Sarah (new)

Sarah | 180 comments Okay, sorry for the potentially weird question, but who are Ty and Zane? I feel like it is a pop culture reference that I'm just not getting, but the curiosity is killing me.

Camilla | 1251 comments Sarah wrote: "Okay, sorry for the potentially weird question, but who are Ty and Zane? I feel like it is a pop culture reference that I'm just not getting, but the curiosity is killing me."

They're the main characters of Abigail Roux's series Cut & Run, the first book is called, duh, Cut & Run. It's a MM romance slash police investigation series. I haven't read any of it, but many here in Perks gush over it.

Camilla | 1251 comments Emma wrote: "Can anyone who has not let me know what they are reading for hand 1 please let me know asap."

As you had me slotted in for card 9 and my only "certain" book for February that fills that requirement is The Underground Girls of Kabul: In Search of a Hidden Resistance in Afghanistan, I'll be reading that one. It's an audiobook, so it will take at least a week to complete, even though I listen at 1.4 speed (I don't have as much time for audiobooks as I have for paper/kindle books).

Just a question, Emma: you don't want to use a separate planning sheet as the other captains do?

That sounds very gruesome. I've only read one book about the Jack the Ripper. It was non fiction and very boring. I want to read Stalking Jack the Ripper which is more fictional i just haven't picked it up yet.

Okay so no one beat me up, but I still have not finished this series. I've only read the first book in the series. I guess because until like 3 years back i used to read nothing but crime and historical fiction. Oh and dystopian.

The planning sheet is optional and I had a look at, doesn't seem like it's going to be that useful to me. I didn't use one last time and managed just fine, but if people would prefer me to, then I can.

message 97: by Emma (new)

Emma | 757 comments @Catherine, it's fine don't worry, just let me know as soon as you can. :)

message 98: by Emma (new)

Emma | 757 comments @Brianna, it's not for everyone, but the first 3 are the worst in my opinion, the last 4 get more adult and have a lot more to them, hence why I love them so much :)

That's interesting. I love Harry Potter but much prefer the first 4. The fifth is almost unreadable to me. It upsets me so much. I much prefer the more light-hearted ones.
