This is our discussion of the short story....

Recall Mechanism (1959) by P.K. Dick

From the anthology The Minority Report and Other Classic Stories by Philip K. Dick. See The Minority Report and Other Classic Stories discussion hub for more info on the anthology and pointers to discussion of its other stories.

Silvana (silvaubrey) I was surprised that this story also has precogs, like the Minority Report. Wonder if there are other stories of PKD that's also about them.

This was my least favorite in the entire collection (so far - I still have a few more to read). Again, it just felt half-baked. PKD uses precogs in a few stories in this collection, and also in his novel Ubik. Probably other novels too, I just can't remember off the top of my head.

As the story progressed, I was thinking it was headed along the lines of “We Can Remember It for You Wholesale, probably partly because it was made into a movie titled “Total Recall", which share a word with this title, which admittedly is a bit of a bank shot. :) Anyway, it seemed like it was headed for some sort of repressed memory story.

I thought the fact that it turned out to be not a repressed memory but a “pre-memory was an interesting twist.

I also noticed that unlike “Minority Report, it's apparently not possible to change the future in this story's incarnation of precognition.
