Bety (betyplusbooks) | 211 comments Pages-Per-Point Guide

The lower the number of pages per point, the faster you can theoretically accumulate points. This will help you get an idea of the points per page for each tier of pages.

Pages | Pages Per Point

100 | 20
160 | 32

161 | 8.05
350 | 17.5

351 | 8.775
500 | 12.5

501 | 8.35
650 | 10.8

651 | 8.14
800 | 10

801 | 8.01
900 | 9

901 | 6.93

The Advantage of Books at the Bottom of Tiers
The closer a page count is to the bottom of a tier, the fewer pages to read in order to get one point. This difference is more pronounced in the lower tiers. In general, lower end of the tier is better.

The Advantage of Short Books
Short books are psychologically easier to get through. Even if you don't like it, a short book can be easier to push through and finish. If you decide not to finish a short book, it is overall a lower potential loss of reading time and points. I might finish five 100 page books more quickly than one 500 page book, simply because each book is less daunting and the sense of progress is less ponderous.

The Advantage of Long Books
Long books tend to have a lower number of pages required to earn a point. In higher page number books, books at the top of that page tier aren't as drastically different from the lower part of the range in their pages-per-point ratio than lower tiers. Finishing a long book gives us a lot of points, and can be really satisfying.

The Advantage of Totally Ignoring Page Numbers
If you don't go for books based on what you enjoy or what you feel like reading, you'll probably read slower. So read books that YOU are really excited about, and maybe let the considerations of page number influence you if you can't decide.

Caly ☯ Crazy Book Lady | 596 comments Greetings Team!

I'm Caly and I will be your Captain for this Galactic Adventure along with Bethany my Co-Captain.

Let me start off by saying I am not Star Wars obsessed though I am old enough to remember when the original came out (which I saw 3 times LOL) and owned a copy of the sound track "album" ! R2D2 and C3P0 were my favorite characters so its fun to be on a Droid Team. Though its my first time crossing to the Dark Side. 8-)

I look forward getting to know you all and having a great challenge!

Please introduce yourself when you check in and let us know a little about you. Thanks

Have you played Tower Teams before?
What is your favorite genre? Least favorite?
How many books do you average a week?
Are you looking forward to being a chatty team? What shall we talk about?
Are you a dog person? (LOL I am more about that later )
Anything else you would like to share.

Caly ☯ Crazy Book Lady | 596 comments Also please include the name and a link to your Tower Teams shelf so I can add it to the spreadsheet. Thanks!

I'm Annika and come from southern Sweden - and I'm an self-confessed challenge addict. I have lost track of the number of challenges I'm participating at the moment. It all went downhill from UNO a few years back =P
I'm a moody reader, so what I read varies from day to day. I've been on an mm binge for the past couple of years though. I generally really dislike any kind of horror, dystopian and YA books.

Confession: I've never seen any of the star wars movies.... (Can I still be on the team?)

Candace W | 372 comments Hello all, I'm Candace!

Have you played Tower Teams before? I've not done Tower Teams. I did do the Wobble challenge and quite enjoyed it. Not sure if it's similar to that or not, but I suppose I will find out soon enough.

What is your favorite genre? Tough to say. Years ago, I would only read Mystery/Thriller type books, but over the last few years, I read just about anything I can get my hands on.

Least favorite? Not sure I have a least favourite. I suppose I might say Young Adult, just because I've aged out of that genre. I have read some YA though in the last while.

How many books do you average a week? I am one that tends to vary greatly week to week. Some weeks, I struggle to finish one book. Other weeks, three or four. It really depends on life and how much time it allows me to read.

Are you looking forward to being a chatty team? In the interest of total honesty, I said that I didn't have a preference. I would have been happy either way.

What shall we talk about? Sky's the limit. We should probably talk about why we all went dark side at some point.

Are you a dog person? (LOL I am more about that later ) Absolutely. I have a 90 pounds German Shepherd/Rottie mix at home. He's probably drooling all over my pillow right now.

Anything else you would like to share: I have been on the site for a little while now, but I can't say that I am all that Å·±¦ÓéÀÖ savvy though. I'll probably need some rules dumbed down for me throughout the course of the challenge.

Is this what you are looking for in terms of a link to my Shelf:

/review/list...

Hopefully, it is. If not, let me know and I will try, try again.

Hi Annika! There is no Star Wars prerequisite to be on the team. Thanks for checking in. My amount of reading varies too depending on how life it going LOL. Love your animated bear. 8-)

message 17: by Bety (new)

Bety (betyplusbooks) | 211 comments Thanks Annika! All caffeinated up now!

Have you played Tower Teams before?

Nope, but I did play WOBBLE last year. I thought this would be a good challenge to get my co-captain-ing started on, since the strategy is just READ A LOT OF STUFF and there's less coordination between team member required than some other challenges.

What is your favorite genre? Least favorite?

I'm a big fantasy junkie, which is traditionally my favorite genre. I also love thrillers and sci-fi.

I can't come up with a genre that I actively dislike, but I haven't read much history or historical fiction, and though I do like some YA, I'm pretty picky about it.

How many books do you average a week?

Anywhere between 1 and 7, depending on the book length. Lately I've had a lot of work tasks that require waiting in between active work, and so I've gotten through as many as two books per day. I aim for at least 100 pages a day on average, though.

Are you looking forward to being a chatty team? What shall we talk about?

I'm so looking forward to a chatty team! I love talking to strangers on forums. You'll probably see me ranting and raving about my latest reads, and insisting various team members read certain books based on other things they like.

Are you a dog person? (LOL I am more about that later )

I love dogs, but I'm really lazy, and dogs take time out of my potential reading time with their need for walks. Dogs are like children are to me right now -- I love them when they are nice and belong to other people. My ideal situation would be to have a roommate who had a dog, so I could pet it whenever I wanted but wouldn't be my responsibility.

Anything else you would like to share.

I have a list/spreadsheet addiction. I have a list for the year of books I want to finish. I also make monthly and weekly lists every week and month, and each of these has maybe half the total number of books I will finish during that time period. So... you'll probably be getting those lists as updates for my personal goals week-to-week, or at least at the beginning of each month.

The spreadsheet junkie tendencies may mean I'll be making pretty graphs of what our team has read -- things such as pie charts showing genre, graphs of points over time, bar graphs of # of books in each page range, stuff like that.

Have you played Tower Teams before?
Yes, I played it last time. Loved it!

What is your favorite genre? Least favorite?
Horror is my favorite. I read a lot of it. My least favorite is romance.

How many books do you average a week?
It really varies. Lately, it's been about 2. I have a feeling that will go up once the challenge starts, though. These team challenges always push me to read more, which is great:-)!

Are you looking forward to being a chatty team? What shall we talk about?
We can talk about anything:-).

Are you a dog person? (LOL I am more about that later )
I like dogs, but I'm much more of a cat person! I don't own any dogs, but we do have two very spoiled cats.

Anything else you would like to share.
I've watched all the Star Wars movies (my teens are big fans), but I admit I'm drawing a bit of a blank on who C2-B5 is! Maybe I'll have to rent Rogue One and watch it again. It is a great movie, even for those of us who might not be super fans.

You and I are going to make a perfect pair! The spreadsheet is the one thing I find a bit daunting as a Captain though I really want to learn how to navigate it, so I will be leaning on you for help there.

Caly ☯ Crazy Book Lady | 596 comments Well I guess I should take a moment to answer my own questions so you can learn a bit about me as well.

I have not played Tower Teams before but I did do WOBBLE last year and I currently a Co-Captain for UNO so I am fairly challenge savvy, and I am really looking forward to steering the helm as Captain.

I generally manage 6 books per month so that is about 1.5 a week. As others have said, it depends a lot on how long the book is and how much else is going on with me. I work full time at Whole Foods Market from 6 am - 2 pm so you will find me posting early before I go to work and in the afternoons when I come home and sit down to a cup of tea.

Well I have already made it clear that Romance is my least favorite genre but Historical Fiction is by far my favorite. I especially like books about China. After that I love to read Fantasy and have found myself drawn to Thrillers and Suspense since joining Å·±¦ÓéÀÖ. YA dystopian novels are a guilty pleasure as well and they are generally a fast read so they are great for challenges.

I obviously love Chatty teams! I think part of the fun of a challenge is getting to meet and talk to others who love books and even discuss the books themselves ( We will have to come up with a plan for the BOMs). I also love to get to know people so it will be fun to not limit ourselves to just talking about books or the challenge.

That said, I am absolutely crazy about dogs and Dachshunds in particular. We have 2. Pippin who is 9 years old and a dapple male and Annie who is just 10 months and a red female.
description

They are completely spoiled and I love them to pieces! You will certainly find me mentioning them from time to time, 8-)

My shelf link so you have it too is tower-teams

Look forward to a great few months of reading and getting to know you all.

message 33: by Candace (last edited Apr 19, 2017 10:49AM) (new)

Candace W | 372 comments I used to absolutely hate romance novels. I read one when I was younger and just thought it was so melodramatic and over the top. It ruined me on them. I read one for the Wobble challenge last year and I greatly enjoyed it. I ended up reading the whole series. I still think they are clichéd and melodramatic, like the book equivalent of watching reality TV or something, but they can be enjoyable for just turning your brain off.

And in terms of aging out of YA books, I am not that far removed from YA, but still more just A at this point. I find when I do read the YA books, I struggle to relate to them now. I don't really remember high school, so I don't remember that feeling of everything being life or death. I don't know if that makes sense to anyone but me, a common theme in my life. I tend to really only like the YA books that are not set in present day or this world.

message 34: by Bety (new)

Bety (betyplusbooks) | 211 comments Hm, to be fair I did read Attachments by Rainbow Rowell, and really liked it even though it was contemporary romance... So maybe it's like YA, that I can like it, but I'm picky about it.

³¢¾±²Ô»å²õ²¹²âÓË«S¾±²Ô²µ±ð°ù°¿´Ú³§³Ù´Ç°ù¾±±ð²õÓË« (lindsaysingerofstories) | 702 comments Hi everyone! I just found our thread so here goes my introduction!

Have you played Tower Teams before? YES! And I loved it! I also did WOBBLE and they are both so fun! If you enjoyed WOBBLE you will love TT (I actually liked Tower Teams more, personally...but I'll let you decide for yourselves!)

What is your favorite genre? Least favorite? I am a mood reader, meaning my favorite genre depends on my mood. Sometimes its YA, sometimes its mystery/thriller, sometimes paranormal/fantasy, or sometimes its chick lit. However, my least favorite genre is genre romance. I specify because most contemporary romance is okay, or historical realistic romance is ok. But what I don't like is the "Cowboy and his Lass" type of stuff, or "The Duke meets his Lady" fluffy things like that. That is not my genre.

How many books do you average a week? In a good week I finish 2-3 books. Maybe even 4. In a slow week I finish just 1. I've been slow as of late because I'm studying for a big exam (which I'm sure you'll hear me griping about, so I apologize in advance)

Are you looking forward to being a chatty team? What shall we talk about? YES! We can talk about everything! Books, dogs, weather, books, family, movies, life, books, music, animals, food, books.....

Are you a dog person? (LOL I am more about that later ) YES! More about that later....

Anything else you would like to share. I just got engaged last summer so I am in the process of planning my wedding. We're getting married in September of 2018. :D My fiancee is a huge Star Wars buff so by default I am a jedi in training so its a little painful to be on a dark side Tower Team. :\ I am from Illinois in the US. Just finished school (college) for the second time and am about to take my certification exam for medical billing and coding so I can get a job in the field. That happens in a couple weeks so like I mentioned, my "reading for pleasure" is a little slower than usual and my stress is a little higher than usual...but I'm on GR quite a bit so...yeah! :) Looking forward to being with y'all!! :D

Ya know, I betcha this is it. Because when I think 'romance', I think the latter, but in practice I have enjoyed books that have a big focus on romance, if it's realistic, done well, and has a well done plot outside of the romance.

Hi Lindsay! Glad you checked in! Congrats on the engagement and the soon to be degree! You certainly will be busy for the next few weeks but luckily TT runs for a few months so there will be plenty of time for you to read I'm sure.

You are right that there is a difference in the types of Romance books out there. If it is part of a good story that is different than a book that the plot is solely the romance and it has some hunky pirate on the cover and a swooning woman. LOL I mostly hate weak female characters as you will learn.

Look forward to hearing more about your dog(s) *grin

Annika | 1744 comments So at the risk of being lynched (again) ;) I read mainly romances in all forms; paranormal, contemporary, suspense and whatever I'm in the mood for. But the one thing that I really hate is when one of the MCs are TSTL, too perfect or needs the "hero" to save them and basically people lacking an type of spine. I have a tendency to want to strangle doormats....
Also, have you noticed that many of the so called romances from the 80's are actually abusive relationships?
I loved reading those when I was a teen - sadly I didn't understand better, but now I cringe at them,,,,

That being said, if anyone is looking for an extremely great romance (where the romance isn't the focus of the book), you should totally check Carry the Ocean (The Roosevelt, #1) by Heidi Cullinan out. Easily one of my all time favourites. It will make you laugh and cry and it's just wonderful.

Not to worry Annika, you will not be lynched I promise! I actually love that different people enjoy different genres. I actually found myself enjoying suspense novels which I had never read before thanks to friends on goodreads who reviewed them. As I said earlier it is really a weak female in a book rather than the "romance" that bothers me. That and detailed descriptions of sex. I am not a prude by any means (I have read erotica when in the mood), I just find it boring to a plot if it is not necessary to advance the story.

CrazyCat (Alex) | 397 comments Hellooooo everybody!
I just found out that the teams are up and before I get back to work (I'm working nights as a nurse and tonight I'm on) I just wanted to check in. I'm from Sweden too (hej Annika ;)) and I think I see at least one team mate from the WOBBLE challenge (Candace?).

Have you played Tower Teams before?
No, I Always wanted to give it a try but never got around to do it. I did the WOBBLE challenge though and that was so much fun.

What is your favorite genre?
I'm reading a lot of YA. I think mostly because I can't stand a book full with all kinds of steam and sexy stuff which adds nothing to the story. I read almost everything Urban Fantasy, Thriller, Paranormal.

Least favorite?
Romance novels, hands down.

How many books do you average a week?
All from two to five. It depends on if I'm in a slump and have a hard time finding the right book or if I have books lined up I can't wait to get started.

Are you looking forward to being a chatty team?
I signed on for a chatty team because I'm not a great speaker and I hope that this will make me interact some more.

What shall we talk about?
Books, Life and Everything coming to mind.

Are you a dog person?
Yes, absolutly. I have a 8 year old Labrador namned Mette. She always keeps me company while I sleep when I get home after work in the morning.

Questions answered.

Have you played Tower Teams before? I'm pretty sure I've played all the TT and Wheel-a-thons and I did Wobble. I really like the group challenges in this group.

What is your favorite genre? I really like romance, cozy mysteries and Urban Fantasy

Least favorite? I don't tend to like Westerns, horror or historical fiction

How many books do you average a week? Around 3, but it can vary.

Are you looking forward to being a chatty team? Yes, although I admit to being more of a lurker type.

What shall we talk about? Books for sure.

Are you a dog person? Yes. I have an 8 year old Papillion named Bandit (not the one in my profile pic - that was a foster).

Anything else you would like to share: I live in Texas and I can rarely get on GoodReads while at work so unless I'm working from home (which I try to do 1 or 2 days a week), I won't be online until later in the day. I do enjoy Star Wars, although I haven't seen Rogue One yet. I also like to keep my challenges organized in Excel.

Ooooh, Diane, watch Rogue One ASAP!!! It was so very good!!! Honestly, it is now probably my favorite Star Wars movie. It filled in plot holes, had a great plot, good new characters, and the rebel aspect of it was amazing!!

I just found out that the teams are up and before I get back to work (I'm working nights as a nurse and tonight I'm on) I just wanted to check in. I'm from Sweden too (hej Anni..."

Greetings Alex! Nice to have you on the team!

Looks like we are divided down the middle on the romance genre but that is cool. I love your dog's name, what does it mean? My son had a Lab when he was little, they are great dogs.

And don't worry about being a great speaker, we just love to hear what you have to say. 8-)

Hi Diane! Thanks for checking in!

I agree with you about Westerns, I sometimes forget that is even a genre since I avoid it so much, but maybe I can find a historical fiction that will change your mind about that genre. 8-)

No problem about being on later in the day, I am mostly on real early as you can see, that is one of the nice things about this kind of set up, there is not exact time you have to be here. And certainly chime in when you feel like it but there is no pressure to chat everyday, I was just trying to get to know everyone a little bit.

Love your dog's name!
