I've been looking for this book for years but I read it probably around 12-ish years ago (I think it was older, so around early 2000s period) but it was about a kind of wizard's apprentice? I can't remember anything more than that but what I do distinctively remember is the cover- it was black, kind of raised, with a boy running while holding a flask (I THINK that the potion made him run really fast or it stopped time/slowed it down) and there was some green in the cover. It was drawn kind of like a realistic looking cartoon. I think it was also a series and there was a map (kind of like in LOTR) in the front of the book that showed the area. I also think it was set in a medieval-ish period. I would say it was YA/middle-school level and it wasn't longer than 250ish pages? I also don't believe it was about witches.

Sorry if this is terribly vague- I read it twice when I was younger and completely forgot anything other than vague details about it and the cover.

Books that I know it's not: School of Wizardry (Circle of Magic series), nothing by Terry Pratchett.

Denzil's Dilemma by Sherryl Jordan? The cover is blue but he is running holding something that looks a bit like a flash and is a wizard's apprentice with the plot of that book being about time travel.

I don't think it was this book but thank you for trying :)! The cover was a lot more modern- if you google Mokee Joe: Recharged, it was kind of drawn in that vibe or Kruschmeister by Peter Murray? Just in terms of like character design but the colors and stuff were different.

I was searching for it on another search engine and I've finally found it! It's part of the Tales of the Dark Forest series by the Two Steves and the one I was thinking of is called Whizzard!
