Beth Sponzilli (bethsponzilli) What is your favorite historical fiction series?

message 2: by Liz (new)

Liz Gibson | 40 comments I don't know if this counts but the Guenevere trilogy by Rosalind Miles. If not, anything that Jean Plaidy has written or the Josephine Bonaparte trilogy by Sandra Gulland are my personal favourites!!

I really like the Secrets of the Tudor Court by Kate Emerson. I enjoy Bernard Cornwell as well.

message 4: by Libbie (new)

Libbie Kramer | 1 comments I loved both the Guinevere trilogy by Miles and the Secrets of the Tudor Court by Emerson. While not really a series, some of my favorite other authors are Anne O'Brien, Elizabeth Chadwick, Joanne Hickson, Karen Harper and Brandy Purdy.

Fiona Hurley (fiona_hurley) | 292 comments Bernard Cornwell's Saxon Stories
Diana Gabaldon's Outlander (although the recent ones get a bit drawn out)
Neal Stephenson's Baroque Cycle

message 6: by Margaret (new)

Margaret Crampton (cramptonmargaret) | 8155 comments Seven Sisters series by Lucinda Riley

message 7: by Eileen (new)

Eileen Iciek | 462 comments There are some good ones out there. Probably Outlander for me, but Cornwell's Saxon stories are close behind. There's Poldark, Elizabeth Chadwick's 2 books on William Marshall, Philippa Gregory's many books on the Tudors. This is just off the top of my head.

message 8: by Abigail (new)

Abigail Bok (regency_reader) | 781 comments Not for everyone, but Dorothy Dunnett’s Lymond Chronicles are a rollicking good read.

message 9: by Jennifer (last edited Jul 21, 2017 10:46AM) (new)

Jennifer | 2957 comments I prefer Gabaldon's Lord John Grey series to Outlander. I'll 2nd (or 3rd?) Cornwell's Saxon series!
Some of my other favs (in no particular order - love 'em all!):
The Hangman's Daughter, by Oliver Potzsch
The Norsemen Saga, by James L. Nelson
The Potato Factory, Bryce Courtenay
If two books can count for a series, I will add The Pillars of the Earth, by Ken Follett

message 10: by Sarah (new)

Sarah | 82 comments I would definitely recommend both the Outlander series and the Lord John Grey series. Both are historical but one reads more like a mystery while the other is about relationships and family. I am currently reading Kate Quinn's Empress of Rome Saga and love it as well. Philippa Gregory's Tudor novels and Cousin series are also entertaining. Last year I read the Ellis Island trilogy by Kate Kerrigan and I felt those to be easy reads but informative about immigration to the United States in the early 20th century.

message 11: by Jeffrey (new)

Jeffrey Walker (jkwalkerauthor) Upton Sinclair's "Lanny Budd" novels. They weren't historical fiction when he wrote them, but if you want a great romp through the period 1914 - 1953 written in beautiful and witty prose, these 11 novels are the ticket. Besides, if people can get by calling Jane Austen "historical fiction," I'm going to represent for Upton Sinclair!

Beth Sponzilli (bethsponzilli) I am a big Outlander Fan,. I was just curious what other people's fave series are. One of mine is the Tea Rose Trilogy by Jennifer Donnelly. So good. Also look the Poldark series and Sara Donati's Wilderness series.

I've been wanting to read Sara Donati for a while now. They look so good!

I love Sara Donati's series--particularly the later books. I tend to single out certain books in a series as especially good. I can't think of an entire series that I've experienced as uniformly excellent. I see writers are human beings. They can't always be brilliant.

Which one of Sarah Donati's book was your favorite. I loved The Queen of Swords.

Yes, Queen of Swords was particularly memorable because part of the storyline took place in New Orleans. Since it contradicted a mystery series I'd read taking place in New Orleans during this period, I researched it and discovered that Sara Donati did her homework.

❶¬ǰ𲹻⊰❀ | 350 comments Beth wrote: "What is your favorite historical fiction series?"

I just finished Elizabeth Jane Howard's Cazalet family series. It's a family saga set in 1930s and 40s in England. /series/7377...

message 19: by Elinor (new)

Elinor Yes, the Cazalet series is excellent and I didn't want it to end! I also loved the Barchester Chronicles by Anthony Trollope, and the Master and Commander series by Patrick O'Brian.

message 20: by Jerry (new)

Jerry Bennett | 76 comments I like all Bernard Cornwell's series and would add Patrick O'Brian as well. If you like the Tudor period I would certainly recommend the Shardlake series by C.J. Sansom. My own favourite series is now quite old - "The Accursed Kings" by Maurice Druon, but over 40 years ago this series really drew me in to Historical fiction. It mirrors a period of time (1314 - 1346) that is of particular interest to me. Druon set his stories mostly in France whereas my interest is more on the England/Scotland border, but many of the same characters and events overlap.

Jennifer Donnelly, A Northern Light....loved it!! Been meaning to start Tea Rose tril.

message 22: by Karen (new)

Karen | 17 comments Dorthy Dunnett's two series, The Lymond Chronicles and Niccolo Rising are fabulous beyond words. Also loved: all of Patrick O'Brien; most of Bernard Cornwell, especially Sharpe; Sharon Kay Penman; Lindsey Davis's Falco mysteries; Michael Jecks's Templar mysteries; Lauro Joh Rowland's Ichiro Sano mystery series; and, of course, Brother Cadfael.

message 23: by Earl (new)

Earl DeVere | 14 comments For series... id say Bernard Cornwell and Sharon Kay Penmen.

message 24: by Abigail (new)

Abigail Bok (regency_reader) | 781 comments This may be on the nose-in-the-air end, but I am a great lover of J. I. M. Stewart’s Staircase in Surrey series, starting with The Gaudy. It meanders around and meanders around, and then suddenly at the end of the fifth volume there’s a small incident and all the threads get drawn together. Plotting magic. Plus he expands my vocabulary!

message 25: by C.P. (new)

C.P. Lesley (cplesley) | 585 comments Amelia Peabody, starting with Crocodile on the Sandbank and ending with The Painted Queen. Also the Lymond Chronicles, especially Pawn in Frankincense to Checkmate.

And mine, but you may not care about those. ;-)

message 26: by Carol (new)

Carol (carolfromnc) | 9721 comments Michael Pearce's Mamur Zapt series. I love the writing, the humor and learning about early Twentieth Century Egypt. The first in the series is The Mamur Zapt and The Return of the Carpet, but one can start anywhere and enjoy them fully.

message 27: by Tony (new)

Tony Morgan | 13 comments I'd recommend the Shardlake books by CJ Sansom.

message 28: by Tony (new)

Tony Morgan | 13 comments I'd also highlight SJ Parris's Giordano Bruno books - very good if you like linking history and mystery together.

I'm putting Sara Donati on my list as I love wilderness adventures. Also, I am a huge fan of the trilogy that begins with Lonesome Dove.

message 30: by Kandice (new)

Kandice Jennifer Donnelly's Tea Rose trilogy.

Any of Philippa Gregory.

My all time favorites are Colleen McCullough's Masters of Rome and her Carmine Demonico series set in the 60's.

message 31: by Margaret (new)

Margaret Crampton (cramptonmargaret) | 8155 comments My best series is the Seven Sisters series by Lucinda Riley

message 32: by Nancy from NJ (new)

Katz Nancy from NJ (nancyk18) I read this series long ago. It spans the globe with interesting people places and events. Yet I never heard anything about this six book series. These were written by Marilyn Harris and are called The Eden series. It begins with This Other Eden. Great reading.

message 33: by Patricia (new)

Patricia | 85 comments I've enjoyed several of the series already mentioned. I will add: Helen Hollick's Pendragon Banner Trilogy; Penny Vincenzi's Lytton Family series; & Pamela Belle's Wintercombe trilogy. I read these last years ago, so there may have been more than three, but I don't think so. I read a lot of her books then & really enjoyed them. I need to read them again.

message 34: by Patricia (new)

Patricia | 85 comments I just checked on the Pamela Belle books & there is four in that series (about the English Civil War). Not sure I ever read the fourth one.

message 35: by Nancy from NJ (new)

Katz Nancy from NJ (nancyk18) I think this series qualifies - it starts after WWI. Maisie Dobbs by Jacqueline Winspear. I really am enjoying this series

message 36: by Lindsey (new)

Lindsey | 260 comments My favorite series are Outlander by Diana Gabaldon, Empress of Rome by Kate Quinn and the Conqueror/Genghis Khan series by Conn Iggulden. I even got my husband interested in Iggulden's series.

Love Amelia Peabody and the rest of the characters. Haven't read the last two books yet but waiting for my life to settle down to have the time.

message 38: by Leonide (new)

Leonide Martin | 77 comments If you want a series with unique and exotic settings, try "Mists of Palenque Series" about four powerful ancient Mayan queens. These historic Maya women had huge influence on their culture.
The Visionary Mayan Queen: Yohl Ik'nal of Palenque The Controversial Mayan Queen: Sak K'uk of Palenque The Mayan Red Queen: Tz'aakb'u Ahau of Palenque
