2017 Challenge: I finished!

Favorite prompt: A book that's mentioned in another book (This was part of the advanced challenge, I'm not sure how others handled it, but for me I made it something I've read this year. It actually worked out perfectly since I read Behind Closed Doors for "A bestseller from 2016" advanced prompt and And Then There Were None was mentioned!)
Favorite book: Magpie Murders (I read this for "A story within a story", and it is phenomenal!)
Least favorite prompt: A book you bought on a trip (I went super specific since I bought a book while on a tour in Ireland, but the parameters were kind of weird for this. Like, can you just buy one in an airport?)
"I hope they bring back this prompt in 2018": A book by a person of color (it's a great way to read new authors for people like me who tend to read the same authors)
Suggestion for a new prompt for 2018: A book about someone stranded alone (I'm thinking books where people were left behind and had to survive, some suggestions are Life of Pi / Island of the Blue Dolphins / The Revenant
Finally, are you in for 2018? OF COURSE! This is my second year of doing the challenge and I love it!! It really helps you channel your reading and explore books you may never have picked up
Bonus question: the last prompt I finished was "A story within a story" for the list of 40 since I really wanted to read Magpie Murders for this prompt and it just came out in June and of course I always use the library so I had to wait until it was available!

Great idea! I added to the list of questions in my original post :)

Added Magpie Murders to my TBR list! I'm glad you mentioned it.

Date you finished: 7/13/17
Favorite prompt: A book from a nonhuman perspective, I thought that was a fun one to find. There's more out there than you think!
Favorite book: hard to say, I read a number of good ones. Probably Kushiel's Dart (book over 800 pages). I love Jaqulene Carey's world building, and I kept meaning to get to this trilogy. Good to finally get it started! Now I need to find the other two.
Least favorite prompt: A book with career advice. I don't really like self-help type books in general, and my career is kind of a "well this is a compromise between what I want and what will give me a paycheck" type, so not super interested in reading about it.
Last prompt you finished: Book with a family member title in it. I'd really wanted to read My Grandmother Asked Me to Tell You She's Sorry and it took forever to get from the library, or I'd have finished a month sooner.
"I hope they bring back this prompt in 2018": I agree with the book by a person of color. I think especially for those of us in America/Europe, it's really easy to find books by white people even if you're not looking for them. You generally have to LOOK for books from other perspectives.
Suggestion for a new prompt for 2018: I think a prompt for "travel to alternate reality/world" would be cool. There's plenty of books about falling through rabbit holes, wardrobes, or otherwise finding themselves in a different sort of world that follows new rules. I think it'd be fun, for me, to try to find new ones!
Finally, are you in for 2018? Yep. the only reason I didn't do last year is because I didn't realize the reading challenge I did in 2015 was by Pop Sugar, the list that got passed around my facebook wall had no branding. It hadn't occurred to me that it would be a yearly thing. Now I know, so I'll look for it :)
Edit: I'm post number 929 on the main lists post, with my full reading list including advanced.

Favourite prompt: A book you loved as a child. This got me to start reading a lot of books I either read as a child or wanted to read and never got around to.
Favourite book: Tales of the Peculiar (I read it twice!)
Least favourite prompt: A book that's more than 800 pages.
Last prompt you finished: A book with one of the four seasons in the title. I don't know why I kept putting this off, because I loved the book I read for it (The Long Winter-Wilder)
"I hope they bring back this prompt in 2018": A book with a (certain coloured) spine or cover. I don't know why, but I love those types of prompts.
Suggestion for a new prompt for 2018: Oh geez. I don't even know where to begin.
Finally, are you in for 2018? Oh, I guess I'm as ready as I'll ever be.

Thanks!

Added!

Favorite prompt: A book by an author from a country you've never visited - I enjoy finding new authors and getting a different cultural perspective so this was a great prompt to me.
Favorite book: The Golem and the Jinni - I did not know what to expect when I started this book but it was surprising and interesting from the first page onward. I highly recommend it even if you are not a fan of fantasy - a lot more than that going on in this book.
Least favorite prompt: Steampunk - even though I love sci-fi and fantasy, this sub-genre and I just don't mix well. :-/
Last prompt you finished: Book you bought on a trip - Really had nothing to do with the prompt that made it last, just that the book I happened to choose was 725 pages (which was too short for my 800 page prompt). So my last 2 prompts were the 2 longest books on my lists - Mad Ship for the advanced list at 925 pages and The Name of the Wind for the regular challenge.
"I hope they bring back this prompt in 2018": Well, I guess my favorite prompt - book by an author from a country you never visited - but also liked the prompts from a different ethnicity than you and someone with a disability.
Suggestion for a new prompt for 2018: Well, similar to my favorite prompt, maybe read a book that is a bestseller in a different country or read a book by an author with the same initials as you...that might be a fun search.
Finally, are you in for 2018? Absolutely! I loved it! I found so many new books and authors that I wouldn't have heard about without doing this challenge. The prompt suggestions always had great advice and would help me take my reading to a new level. It also allowed me to pull out old books I never got around to reading so I also made good progress on my TBR list (although it grows daily so I'll never really be "caught up" on that).
So, until next year, I will attempt 2 other reading challenges that I found because I loved this one so much!

Favorite prompt:
10. A book with a cat on the cover. Didnt like the book I ended up with but it was fun trying to find a cat on the cover. Could be any animal or thing.
Favorite book:
That is a toss between ”A dirty Job and ”Erotic stories for Punjabi widows maybe because they where the ones I didnt know what to expect and I found myself thoroughly entertained. I ended up loving ”It ends with us even though I actually wasnt to excited about reading it. It was amazing.
Least favorite prompt:
28. A novel set during wartime. I really struggled with this one and 45. A book about an immigrant or refugee. I just couldnt find any books that wasnt heartbreaking and I am more in to books that maks me happy and have happy endings. There is enough suffering in the world, so I dont need it in my books aswell. I instead ended up reading Harry Potter and the halfblood prince as he is at ”war against the death eaters and Voldemort. And Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallow because he is a sort of refugee/on the run in that book. I know its a stretch but what the hell ;-)
Last prompt you finished:
9. An espionage thriller
"I hope they bring back this prompt in 2018":
14. A book involving travel
Suggestion for a new prompt for 2018:
A book from the villains point of view
Finally, are you in for 2018?
Absolutely. This was my first year and it has been so much fun. I cant wait till they release next years challenge and I can sit and find books and read your recommendations for each prompt. Especially this group and the weekly updates have made it really great. I wouldnt miss it.

Favorite prompt:

I am reading a biography about Elizabeth Taylor for the immigrant book, for the same reason. I keep up with the news so I know what's going on, and I also read mostly for pleasure, a little for education. Usually the history books I read are for pleasure as well.

Favorite prompt: A Book with a Cat on the Cover
Favorite book: I'm going to do my top 5 favorites instead :)
1. Exit to Eden
2. When Dimple Met Rishi
3. We Have Always Lived in the Castle
4. A Wrinkle in Time
5. Valentina
Least favorite prompt: A novel set during wartime
Last prompt you finished: A book with a subtitle Hillbilly Elegy: A Memoir of a Family and Culture in Crisis
"I hope they bring back this prompt in 2018": A book with a title that's a character's name
Suggestion for a new prompt for 2018: I'm going to think on this one...
Finally, are you in for 2018? Yes, definitely!! :)

I'm slightly offended that two of the prompts this year specified buying books: the one you bought on a trip and the one you bought from a used book store. It's not fair to those of use who utilize the public library and can't really afford to buy books regularly. I'm sure I'll manage it somehow (especially if I read a book my daughter bought used) but I'm not finding it to be fun.
I also didn't like the "bestseller from 2016" prompt. It was too hard to find lists of which books were considered "bestsellers." I'd have been happier with "a book published in 2016".
I even changed "a book you bought on a trip" to " a book you got on a trip" and read a book I got for free at a homeschool picnic that another mom was threatening to throw out if nobody took them. But I read most of that stack LAST year and the only one left was boring. Please don't assume that all of us go on a lot of trips or buy a lot of books while away from home!
I ended up reading lots of books about immigrants, as well as books written by authors of countries I've never visited. I somehow manage to read enough books about war without having to try (epic fantasy tends to do that.)
I'm definitely in for 2018! I find it a lot of fun to read a book and then see if it can satisfy a prompt. At least, that's how I've been using the challenge.
And it's kind of freeing that I can now just read any book and not worry if it fits into any of the categories or not.
What prompts would I like to see repeated? I found the "book with a blue cover" from last year and the "book with a red spine" from this year's to be random and fun. I'd like to see a variation on that in every year's challenge. The restrictions on publication year were fun too, especially when it involves looking for both a new book and a classic in the same challenge.
Various random words in the title was fun- whether it's character's names, seasons, etc. A color or an animal in the title could be fun for future prompts.
Honestly, most of the books I enjoyed the most were books I would have read anyway. Many of the books that are a stretch for me aren't as much fun to read. But it is fun just to be challenged, and it would be great to have a few specific genres of books listed as challenge prompts. But not too many in one year!
The "book that's becoming a movie in 2017" was fun. Maybe do "a book that's becoming a TV show in 2018" or "a book that's being turned into a movie or TV show in 2018" for next year.
I treated the regular and advanced prompts as one bigger challenge, and didn't really keep track of which prompts were part of which one. I think I finished the advanced challenge first only because I got stuck on two of the ones on the "regular" list.
ETA: I finished on August 19th.

Favorite prompt: A book written by someone you admire. I love Anna Kendrink so I had to read her book for this!
Favorite book: Anna Kendricks Scrappy Little Nobody
Least favorite prompt: A book published this year. It's hard to find a book that came out the same year, that you want to read, that may or may not be at the library (I don't reread books so buying a new book is wastefull to me)
"I hope they bring back this prompt in 2018": A book recommended by "someone" everyone has different tastes so having a family member, friend, ect to give you a suggestion
Suggestion for a new prompt for 2018: A book a child picks out for you to read. I think it would be fun to see what they chose for you to read, and how they determined what book to pick. I would love bringing my adopted little sisters to the library and telling them to pick out a book for me!
Finally, are you in for 2018? Yes! I love matching books to categories and me and my mom both do this challenge together and we can discuss it!

Message number(s) for regular and advanced list posts: nope, never bothered
Favorite prompt: Besides the ones that were just absolute easy gimmees for me? I guess “A book set in _____ (wilderness, hotel) It adds a little bit of challenge to finding something while still leaving it wide open to allow for personal tastes.
Favorite books: a lot of them, since a lot were things I was reading anyway. A few standouts: Pops: A Life of Louis Armstrong, The Black Count: Glory, Revolution, Betrayal, and the Real Count of Monte Cristo, All Systems Red, The Harbors of the Sun, Dreaming Death, The Bear and the Nightingale
Least favorite prompt: Book mentioned in another book I actually subbed out this one for a 2016 prompt at the end, because I just couldn’t stand it. Picked “a book of poetry because it added a type of book I didn’t already have on the list.
I thought “a book with career advice would be miserable, but then the light-bulb dinged! I was reading through a book of stretches to get myself back on track with that, and it clicked that I was doing it because I’d been getting stiff and sore at my work, therefore. Career advice! 163 pages later I was set, and most of those pages were pictures! :P
Last prompt you finished: The one I swapped prompts for was the last I “counted but I had read it earlier in the year. Last one I read of what ended up final was The Sun Is Also a Star for the immigration prompt there was a long wait at the library for it.
"I hope they bring back this prompt in 2018"/Suggestion for a new prompt for 2018: Don’t really have anything here. I do generally prefer the ones that left plenty of leeway in interpreting them.
Finally, are you in for 2018? Maybe. I enjoyed all the suggestion swapping, but the actual ticking off things on the list wasn’t something super exciting for me.

Favorite prompt: I enjoyed the book from a genre I had never heard of before. I was stunned that there were so many genres I had not heard of. My cousin (who is also doing the challenge) and I had lots of fun researching this genre. I ended up going with a Dieselpunk novel (Atlas Shrugged) which I only found out about while researching a steampunk novel.
Favorite book: This is a hard one but it would have to be The Count of Monte Cristo (my pick for a book with more than 800 pages). My most surprising enjoyable read was the prompt for the best seller I don't normally read (The Hunt for Red October). I can see why it was so popular.
Least favorite prompt: The book about food.
Last prompt you finished: The book about food. I ended up going with a book about diet and it is not one you actually sit down and read. It is more of a dip in, follow the meal plan and try some recipes kind of book. It took me ages but if anyone else is wanting to give it a try it was The 10-Day Gi Diet: Lose up to an inch off your waist.
"I hope they bring back this prompt in 2018": I liked the book by a person of colour ( I chose Breadfruit) and the prompt about a book where the protagonist has a different ethnicity to you (I chose The Tea Girl of Hummingbird Lane). Both of these books offered a different perspective and I found the cultural aspects fascinating.
Suggestion for a new prompt for 2018: I have put this in the separate discussion on this topic.
Are you in for 2018?: Absolutely. I really enjoy these challenges and the conversations that I have had with other participants.
I will continue to participate in the discussions if I read any books that might match any of the prompts.

Favorite prompt: I liked the book over 800 pages from the advanced list. I do read books over that many pages but usually from my favorite authors. For this one I read a book from an author I had never read before and really liked it. I never would have read it without this challenge.
Favorite book: Feversong I would have read this without the challenge. My favorite book that I discovered because of the challenge was It Ends with Us. I would never had read this otherwise and I loved it.
Least favorite prompt: audio book (I would rather read not listen)
Last prompt you finished: A book from a genre you have never heard of before
"I hope they bring back this prompt in 2018": A book set in two different time periods. I love this type of book!
Suggestion for a new prompt for 2018: someone else above mentioned this but I think it is a good one- A book recommended by a friend. I love recommending books to others.
Finally, are you in for 2018? YES- this was my first time doing this and I loved it!

Message number(s) for regular and advanced list posts: #64 for advanced, #80 for regular
Favorite prompt: An audio book. It pushed me to finally find an audio book where I actually liked the narration!
Favorite book: The Hobbit. Though to be fair this was a reread of a favorite.
Least favorite prompt: A book set around a holiday other than Christmas. Finding a book for this prompt was like pulling teeth and much harder than I would have thought!
Last prompt you finished: A book written by someone you admire.
"I hope they bring back this prompt in 2018": The first book in a series you haven't read before.
Suggestion for a new prompt for 2018: A book you read in spite of the cover
Finally, are you in for 2018? Yes, I think so. I might slow down a little and actually participate in the discussions a little more!

Favorite prompt:
Regular: An audiobook, because it finally made me listen to one (I usually don't have the patience), and it was much easier than I'd feared. It helped that the audiobook was a book by one of my favorite authors I'd been wanting to read, anyway.
Advanced: A book about an immigrant or refugee, because it made me read a beautiful, touching, extremely relevant book set during the German refugee crisis which I probably never would have even discovered otherwise.
Favorite book:
Ready Player One (Regular)
Es war einmal Aleppo (Advanced)
Least favorite prompt:
A book with career advice (Regular)
A book that takes place over a character's life span (Advanced; not because I hated the book I read but because it was the hardest to find)
Last prompt you finished:
A book you bought on a trip (Regular)
A book that takes place over a character's life span (Advanced)
"I hope they bring back this prompt in 2018":
A book you've read before that never fails to make you smile (because it allows me to re-read, and I usually don't re-read for this challenge)
Suggestion for a new prompt for 2018:
A YA book without a love triangle
Finally, are you in for 2018?
I would love to (it would be my fourth time), but I have a TBR pile of more than 100 books and I doubt that they will all neatly fit into the categories. I will give the Mount TBR challenge priority next year, but I will check the PopSugar categories, and if they match more than 50 % of my TBR pile, I will join. But not if it would require me to get an additional twenty books.

Date you finished: August 28, 2017 (the advanced list, can't remember when I finished the regular list)
Message number(s) for regular and advanced list posts: Regular #342, Advanced #330 (Contrary to what the original message said, these numbers changed a couple of times during the challenge. Maybe some people deleted messages?)
Favorite prompt: A book that's been on your TBR list for way too long
Favorite book: I liked a lot of them. The ones I ended up talking to other people about were Far from the Tree: Parents, Children and the Search for Identity by Andrew Solomon and Bread, Wine, Chocolate: the Slow Loss of Foods We Love. Generally I prefer reading fiction, but both of these made me think.
Least favorite prompt: Book with a red spine. Since I'm reading everything on Kindle (I live in Spain, and can't afford to buy a lot of hard copy books), I wouldn't have even known what had a red spine if some kind soul hadn't posted that Handmaiden's Tale had a red spine. And, book with career advice (being retired, not terribly relevant for me).
Last prompt you finished: Book about an immigrant or refugee
"I hope they bring back this prompt in 2018": A book involving travel
Suggestion for a new prompt for 2018: A book about living in a country other than your own
Finally, are you in for 2018? Yep! I enjoyed adding some new categories to my reading, and I loved checking them off (yep, I'm a list maker)!

Favorite prompt: A book that been on your TBR list for way too long. I like how this made me go back through my eReader and delve into a book that I kept passing over for more recent acquisitions.
Favorite book: This is a tough one! I ended up reading several books that have become all-time favourites. I'll have to go with Good Omens: The Nice and Accurate Prophecies of Agnes Nutter, Witch because it's the one I'm most likely to re-read and enjoy over and over again; but there were definitely some books that resonated with me that I may not re-read but that I'll always treasure having read (I'm looking at you, Independent People).
Least favorite prompt: A book with career advice. I liked the book I read for this, but I'm not really one for reading non-fiction in my non-work time.
Last prompt you finished: Book with a month or day of the week in the title.
"I hope they bring back this prompt in 2018": A book you loved as a child. It was so nice to revisit one of my favourite childhood books, and I was glad to feel like it stood the test of time.
Suggestion for a new prompt for 2018: A non-YA book that involves magic.

Favorite prompt:
Regular: A book with a red spine - I took the opportunity to really search for a book that interested me and ran across Killers of the Flower Moon: The Osage Murders and the Birth of the FBI. It was just released this year. Grann also wrote The Lost City of Z: A Tale of Deadly Obsession in the Amazon which was a favorite read from this challenge.
Also, A book of letters because I love them.
Advanced: A book from a genre/subgenre you’ve never heard. Between this prompt and the read a steampunk novel on the regular challenge I discovered that I like Steampunk novels, or in the case of the advanced challenge, Mannerpunk novels.
Favorite book:
Regular: The Lost City of Z: A Tale of Deadly Obsession in the Amazon. I read this for a book becoming a movie in 2017 and loved it, and Dog on It. I read this for a book by an author who uses a pseudonym, but it also fit a book from a non-human perspective for which I read another series by Spencer Quinn. The Chet and Bernie series is a great series. Whereas most “animal books are narrated by their human and the animal interjects its thoughts or the human speaks on behalf of the animal, this book is narrated entirely by Chet, the dog. The stories and characters are interesting and Chet’s perspective is terrific.
Advanced: The Sea Keeper's Daughters. This was a great book set in the current day that brings in some of the history of the Melungeons. Lisa Wingate is a great author, so I read everything she publishes.
Least favorite prompt:
Regular: A book set around a holiday other than Christmas and A book with career advice are in a tie. I could not find a book set around a holiday other than Christmas that I wanted to read. I finally went with a M.C. Beaton book - Death of a Valentine. I read the Hamish MacBeth series years ago, so I took the opportunity to read another one. It wasn’t my favorite book in the seres by any means, but it completed the prompt. Also, the book with career advice, I want prompts that take me away from my professional world not make me think about it.
Advanced: A book by an immigrant/refugee - Again, I had a hard time finding something that truly interested me. I finally found a book that looked entertaining and got good ratings and went with that. I’m in a phase where I don’t want to read anything overly sad or dark.
Last prompt you finished:
Regular: A book about food - It just worked out this way and had nothing to do with the prompt itself.
Advanced: A book about a difficult topic - I had a hard time finding something I wanted to read. I chose I Dared to Call Him Father: The Miraculous Story of a Muslim Woman's Encounter with God. It is about a Pakistani woman who converts to Christianity and eventually has to leave Pakistan because of it. It was a good book.
"I hope they bring back this prompt in 2018:
Regular: A book that is a story within a story, a book set in two different time periods, and a book with a red “insert new color spine were all great.
Advanced: A book about a difficult topic.
Suggestion for a new prompt for 2018:
I thought of a bunch of possible prompts as I was going through the challenges and tracked them for the sake of coming up with new books/authors to try on my own. Some of them include:
Read a book about an explorer. - when I read The Lost City of Z
Read a book that was written in a different language from your own (translated to your language). - Reading another book by Gabriel Garcia Marquez has been on my mind recently.
Read a comic book. - This would be a nice change from a mythology/mythological creature prompt.
Read a book that was first published the year of your birth. Lots of my TBR books were published when I was a kid, so I think this would be a good way to see how the world in general and our perspectives have changed.
Read a book with your birth month in the title. - I think someone else mentioned this as well. Goes along with a family-member term or a season name, day of the week, etc.
Read a book about a female who ruled her country. I thought of this when I read a book about an interesting woman, Mata Hari, although she was not a ruler. We’ve had some great and/or interesting female world leaders; i.e., Cleopatra, Catherine The Great, Margaret Thatcher, Benazir Bhutto, Golda Meir, Indira Gandhi, lots of European Queens, etc.
Read a book that takes place on an island. I love islands, and you can go lots of directions with this prompt.
Read a book that takes places on either the Arctic or Antarctica. - Most of us don’t read much about these locations.
Finally, are you in for 2018?
Absolutely. My goal in joining this challenge was to find some new authors, genres, etc. I definitely achieved that. I found some great new authors, genres, and series and had some epic fails, too. Next year, I will slow down. I don’t know why I pushed so hard to get through this challenge because I know that reading 52 books in a year is not a problem for me. I think next year I’ll pace myself to finish by early to md-November.

Favorite prompt: Too many to choose from. There were quite a few I was looking forward to, such as a book that's been on your TBR list way too long, a book with one of the four seasons in the title, a book that is a story within a story, a book involving travel, a book set in two different time periods, a book with a month or day of the week in the title, a book set in a hotel, a book set around a holiday other than Christmas, a book with a family member term in the title...
Favorite book: Well, I just finished The Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Pie Society by Mary Ann Shaffer, and I loved it, so that stands out in my mind right now as my favorite. Of course, I reread Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone, which is an all-time favorite, so it has to be up there at the top, too.
Least favorite prompt: Either a bestseller from a genre you don't normally read, a book with career advice, a steampunk novel, or a book based on mythology.
Last prompt you finished: #3 on the regular list, a book of letters.
"I hope they bring back this prompt in 2018": A book that's been on your TBR list for way too long - I have soooo many books on my TBR list, and any chance to get one knocked out would be great!
Suggestion for a new prompt for 2018: A book that was made into a movie or TV show in the decade you were born (ex. you were born in 1977, the movie/TV show would have been released anytime between 1970 & 1979)
Finally, are you in for 2018? I think so! I am going to do another challenge in 2018, but I hope to be able to do both of them. Looking forward to it! :)

Favorite prompt: I think it was "book that's been on your TBR the longest" - because that was exactly the nudge I needed to do a "deep dive" into my TBR, go all the way back to the top, and read one of those. And it turned out I really enjoyed the book! (Crow Lake)
Favorite book: LOL! um ... 17 of the 52 books I read for this Challenge got 5 stars from me. So, I had 17 favorites? I guess The Bear and the Nightingale is the one that I enjoyed the MOST most, and Crow Lake, News of the World, Dogsbody, The Underground Railroad, and Strangers on a Train are the books that I might not have read if not for this Challenge.
Least favorite prompt: CAREER ADVICE. Can we please never again have self-help or career advice or political anything or celebrity anything, or anything related to those things, never ever again? Please? Each year a little tiny part of me dies when I have to read one of these stupid books just so I can feel like I fully completed the Challenge.
Last prompt you finished: A book with the month or day of the week in the title (Tuesdays at the Castle - it's a book recommended by my daughter years ago, and since we own the book, I kept putting it off in favor of library books, that have due dates, and thus always get priority!
"I hope they bring back this prompt in 2018": I know this is boring of me, but the prompt I really count on is "published this year"
Suggestion for a new prompt for 2018: well ... I was GOING to say "cli-fi" (fiction with climate change as the main plot theme), but just this week over at Around the Year, someone suggested playing "MASH" to pick a book, and it just sounds so FUN, I'd love to do that with this group!! For those of you who may have never played this childrens' game: you list four choices in a few different categories, and then kind of eeny-meeny-miney-mo your way through, as you pick each one. This is generally used to discover if Future You will live in a Mansion, Apartment, Shack, or House, and with which cute guy, and with how many children, and what kind of pet, etc. But in this case, it would be qualities to do with books, maybe one category would be genres, another would be type of author, a third would be setting, a fourth would be cover type, and so on. That's very long winded, and I hope I got the idea across okay.
Finally, are you in for 2018? Yes! of course!

Message number(s) for regular and advanced list posts: I honestly can't remember but you can check out my blog about my reading journey
Favorite prompt: A book about food - because I had never considered reading this kind of book before but the books I chose were a blend of social history and food which was really good. I was also surprised that I liked the book I chose for the genre I don't normally read (Candle in the Darkness by Lynn Austin). This prompt really does challenge your reading.
Favorite book: If by this you mean which book sticks in my head most, that would have to be All the Bright Places by Jennifer Niven. I shed tears. Thinking about the book makes me want to cry. Amazing book that deals so well with a very tough subject.
Least favorite prompt:
Last prompt you finished: A book by someone you admire - because it took so long to think of someone I admire that had written a book
"I hope they bring back this prompt in 2018": no idea as this was the first time I had taken part but I like challenges about genres you wouldn't normally read
Suggestion for a new prompt for 2018: Read a book published in the year you were born; read a book set somewhere you have lived
Finally, are you in for 2018? Yes definitely :)

Favorite prompt: Been on the TBR for too long, mythical creature, red spine, author from a country you haven't been to, cat on the cover.
Favorite book: The Lies of Locke Lamora!! I absolutely adored this book and it has literally been sat on my bookshelves unread for about four years. I am also now a firm V.E. Schwab fan after A Darker Shade of Magic and Vicious.
Least favorite prompt: Career advice. As someone who works in hospitality, a book about travel and set in a hotel were more than enough for me so I "cheated" and learnt how to be thief with my favourite book of the year! I also hated the audio book. This is my first attempt at an audio book and I have discovered that my mind just wanders. I ended up listening to a short story because I couldn't concentrate for a full novel. I wasn't really a fan of the specific genres but neither of the choices were genres I like so just a personal preference.
Last prompt you finished: Used book sale. I am a massive hoarder of books and can't resist a bargain from a charity shop or a market stall so I had about a dozen unread books to pick from.
"I hope they bring back this prompt in 2018": TBR and the author from a country you've never been to.
Suggestion for a new prompt for 2018: I just added a lot to the new thread we have so I'm not going to repeat them all here. I'll just mention that I read a lot of series/same authors/similar topics so I would love a prompt that was just a book you were inspired to read by another book you've read that year, which can be open to interpretation as another book by the same author, same topic, sequel etc.
Finally, are you in for 2018? Maybe. I am hoping for some changes in my life coming up soon so depending how that goes I might not have a choice about the books I read next year.

Favorite prompt: A book from a genre/subgenre you've never heard of; I could probably do this about 12 more times based on how much I added to my TBR.
Favorite book: Just looking at the new (to me) books, I'll go with Bellweather Rhapsody for fiction and The Lost City of Z: A Tale of Deadly Obsession in the Amazon for nonfiction.
Least favorite prompt: Book becoming a movie in 2017; there just aren't enough options for this
Last prompt you finished: family term in title; I had like 2 on my tbr (one which I finally knocked off my tbr since I couldn't motivate myself to read it) and nothing anybody suggested hit my fancy. Eventually I read The Seven Husbands of Evelyn Hugo because it's been so popular. It was much better than expected.
"I hope they bring back this prompt in 2018": The only one I'm ok repeating year to year is the "published this year" prompt. Otherwise I prefer a whole new set :)
Suggestion for a new prompt for 2018: A book about art or artists

An espionage thriller and A book that's published in 2017
I enjoy espionage & the 2017 prompt allowed us to read whatever interested us in new releases
Favorite book:
Here are some 5 stars:
Lonesome Dove
84, Charing Cross Road
The Count of Monte Cristo
March: Book Two
Rebecca
Least favorite prompt:
A book with career advice
Last prompt you finished:
A book you've read before that never fails to make you smile - I don't usually re-read, so I put this off. There are so many good books I haven't read! But then I picked Gone with the Wind which was 1448 pages.
"I hope they bring back this prompt in 2018":
A book with one of the four seasons in the title or book with a red spine (but a different color)
Suggestion for a new prompt for 2018:
So many good suggestions already!

Yes

Message number(s) for regular and advanced list posts: no clue to be honest.
Favorite prompt: A Book about an interesting woman, a book involving a mythical creature, a steampunk novel.
Favorite book: The Guns Above, Kept Tears, Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone
Least favorite prompt: A bestseller from a genre you don't normally read. I know this is an attempt to get us to read more broadly but for people like me who read very broadly as it is, if I don't read a genre it's because I actively dislike it. And A book from an unreliable narrator, speaking of things I actively dislike. And from the advanced list, a book that's more than 800 pages. The older I get the less patience I have with very long books (mostly because they often feel like they should have been 300 pages shorter...) and a book that takes place over a character's life span.
Last prompt you finished: a book with a month or day of the week in the title. Sadly it was one I would have DNFed if I had another book that fit the prompt
"I hope they bring back this prompt in 2018":A book with an eccentric character, a book about a person with disabilities, a book where the main character is a different ethnicity than you, a book with a mythical creature
Suggestion for a new prompt for 2018: I've already offered a few on the thread. How about a book with a Native American character. A book you selected based solely on the cover (or the title).
Finally, are you in for 2018? Yes, I am. I'm going to try to get some friends to join. this is my second year (though last year I didn't realize there was a goodreads group because the place I found the challenge didn't link to it. This is fun.

The first book in a series you haven't read before, though I feel like a lot of the prompts I wasn't sure about led me to some really excellent books.
Favourite book:
I read a lot of good ones! Here's just a few new favs.
Vermilion
Outlander
The Snow Child
The Red Tent
A Darker Shade of Magic
Least favourite prompt(s):
- An espionage thriller: I hate this genre and the book I chose (The Man With the Golden Gun) didn't help matters. It was awful.
- A book set around a holiday other than Christmas: It's difficult to find a book centred around one specific holiday, other than cosy mysteries, which I don't enjoy. I ended up reading something that I wasn't particularly fond of just to get it over with.
- A book with career advice: Eh, just not my cup of tea.
Last prompt I finished:
A book that's more than 800 pages.
"I hope they bring back this prompt in 2018":
The first book in a series you haven't read before, a book by a person of color, a book by or about a person who has a disability, a book that's published in 2018, a book from a nonhuman perspective, a book about an interesting woman, a book from a genre/subgenre you've never heard of... However, I'd like to see a lot of new prompts to balance out the returning ones.
Suggestion for a new prompt for 2018:
As long as there are a wide variety of prompts that force me to explore new genres and/or hunt a bit, I'm good to go. I do like the idea of a book set within 100 miles of where you live, a book by an Aboriginal person, or a book published in the year you were born.
Finally, am I in for 2018?
Yes, definitely. I love a good challenge! On a more personal note, this challenge has helped me improve my mental health and has reacquainted me with my love of reading. I will always be grateful for that.

Favorite prompt: book with cat on the cover - I read "Jennie" and it was absolutely wonderful.
Favorite book: Too many to pick just one! but loved American Gods, Lamb: Gospel According to Biff, A Boy Made of Blocks, The Lost Art of Letter Writing, Good Omens and The Watchmaker of Filigree St.
Least favorite prompt: Recommended by author you love... most of the authors on the ŷ blog I've never heard of and the ones I had... well, let's just say it was a push to find anything they recommended that I was willing to read. Or could get my hands on. Found that prompt really, really hard.

"I hope they bring back this prompt in 2018": anything involving travel or food... or both!
Suggestion for a new prompt for 2018: first publication by a new author (have discovered some great new ones recently through Voracious Readers Only group)
Finally, are you in for 2018? You betcha. Although annoyingly, I find I'm actually holding off reading books I want to read because I suspect they'll fit prompts for next year. And I HATE re-reading. Too little time to waste re-reading when there are millions of books out there waiting to be read! :)

Advanced 8. A book that's more than 800 pages.

Least favorite prompt: There were quite a few but to pick just one.
40. A book you bought on a trip.
I think it assumed people buy books on trips or go on trips. I don't buy books on trips nor do I go on trips often. So, I ended up using a books I bought on a trip to the bookstore.
(I can understand everyone who disliked the career prompt. I ended up reading a book with my son on business strategies of a lemonade stand so I did not mind it.)

Suggestion for a new prompt for 2018:
I'd like to see something with art or music that is broad enough to include both fiction and non-fiction books.
Finally, are you in for 2018?
Nope, I'm very disappointed in the fact that the 2018 list has 11 prompts centered around the individual reader. I don't want to read books based on where I live, my age, my favorite color etc.

Message number(s) for regular and advanced list posts: 40 Basic Prompts (954) and 12 Advanced Prompt (474)
Favorite prompt: A book you loved as a child. I didn't own many books when I was younger, so the ones I did own got read over and over and over again. What a great excuse to go reread one of those. The Boxcar Children definitely stood up after all these years.
Favorite book: HOW DO I CHOOSE? Ummmmm... maybe Carry On. I'm still filled with warm fuzzies every time I think about it, and I can't wait to lead a discussion about it next year with my Harry Potter group. But there were really so many books I loved.
Least favorite prompt: A book from a genre/subgenre that you've never heard of. While I appreciate the attempt at getting us to read out of our comfort zone and learn about new types of books, I found it hard to get excited about super obscure genres and hard to find books available at my library that fit into any of them. Also, I didn't love A book that's becoming a movie in 2017 but only because the movie industry is bad with exact dates and all the ones I wanted to read were either released in late December or supposed to be released in 2017 but then pushed to 2018 instead. And tracking one down that didn't have a long wait list was difficult, because of the movie hype.
Last prompt you finished: An espionage thriller. It's not a genre I read much of, but that's not the reason it took so long. The reason was that I was on the waiting list for the first Jason Bourne book for MONTHS. I finally just gave up and read something else.
"I hope they bring back this prompt in 2018": A book recommended by an author you love. This prompt was great, as it got me excited about a book AND it was fun knowing an author I love enjoyed the book just as much as I was enjoying it.
Suggestion for a new prompt for 2018: Read a sequel or anything but the first book in a series
Finally, are you in for 2018? Absolutely! This was my first reading challenge with specifics like this, and it was so much fun! I read out of my comfort zone. I read books I've been wanting to read for years. I discovered themes and elements in my books I wasn't expecting (i.e. Hey, wait, this IS a holiday! Oh, I'm totally counting this!). I read books I never expected to read (Eat, Pray, Love was not nearly as bad as I'd thought it would be). I read books that surprised me and entertained me and moved me and changed me.

Message number(s) for regular and advanced list posts: Maybe I'll post these later. My lists are a jumbled mess right now.
Favorite prompt: "A book from a nonhuman perspective" I got to read Ancillary Mercy for this which was nice by itself, but generally speaking I just thought it was a fun, creative category.
Favorite book: It's hard to pick just one, and I of course read many of them months ago, but gun to my head I think my favorite overall might be Jane Eyre. It wasn't the most fun of my reads, though I would argue it was probably the best of them. That book is a fine bit of writing.
Least favorite prompt: A book with career advice. I ended up reading a book on simple web design, which was okay, but it wasn't a terribly inspiring category.
Last prompt you finished: "A book with multiple authors." That's more a function of the book I wanted to read for it coming out on October 17th. (It Devours!). I was reading other books up until last Friday though so I didn't delay things to fit this particular one in.
"I hope they bring back this prompt in 2018": "A book mentioned in another book" It was fun when I was reading A Gentleman in Moscow and they mentioned Robinson Crusoe, which I had literally just read. I did this category months before that though, I read Kidnapped. It was a fun sort of random category.
Suggestion for a new prompt for 2018: "A book originally published as a serial" So many classic books this would fit!
Finally, are you in for 2018? Maybe. Doing 52 books this year was a lot!

Favorite prompt: Book recommended by an author you love. I really enjoy looking for and reading author recommendations - I discover a lot of good new reads that way.
Favorite book: Fingersmith, but it's really closely tied with Orphan Train. Although, to be honest, there are eight books that I really, really loved, and it was hard to choose a favorite out of those!
Least favorite prompt: A book that's more than 800 pages. Somehow, I can often read two (occasionally even three) 300 page books a week, but it takes me something like 2-3 months to read a book that's over 800 pages! I have no idea why that happens. Maybe I need to switch storylines often to stay interested.
Last prompt you finished: Genre/subgenre you've never heard of.
I hope they bring back this prompt in 2018: The book where the main character is a different ethnicity than you (or something along those lines).

Favorite prompt: Hard to say...I think maybe a book that's becoming a movie in 2017. I enjoy reading books prior to watching movies. I usually like the book better than the movie.
Favorite book: It is hard to pick just one. I read a number of 5 star books this year. I'll pick A Man Called Ove.
Least favorite prompt: An audiobook. I have a hard time following along with audiobooks. I used a re-read for my book club for this prompt. I just needed a refresher on the book.
