Hi all! Let's use this thread as a bit of an introduction. Include your name, why you wanted to join #WriterlyReads (are you an editor/aspiring editor/author/aspiring author?), and your favorite book on writing or editing!

I'm Mollie, full-time freelance book editor. I wanted to continue learning about writing so I can help my clients tell their best stories. My favorite book on writing is the classic Bird by Bird by Anne Lamott.

Kristian (anerdwithcaffeine) | 1 comments Hi! I'm Kristian (or Krissy, if you like), and I wanted to join #WriterlyReads because I am an aspiring author, but I also have some interest in the editing field, so I'm looking forward to seeing how those two perspectives come together in this group!

I'm currently in my last year of college (English degree), and am also a freelance writer! My favorite book on writing is probably "On Writing" by Stephen King. I just adore him.

Oh, On Writing is perfect! And I agree . . . definitely looking forward to seeing how the two perspectives collide. I think we'll have a nice mix of authors/editors! :)

So glad you're joining us!

Sarah (sarahcoons) | 7 comments Hi! I'm Sarah, and I joined #WriterlyReads because I'm a blogger and an aspiring author/editor; I'm in the midst of drafting a YA fantasy series, and I'm currently working through an online course to learn how to become a freelance proofreader in the hopes it'll be a good stepping stone into the world of editing.

I'm seriously lacking in my repertoire of books on writing, but my most recent read in the genre was If You Want to Write by Brenda Ueland and I loved it. (On Writing is my next read!)

Monica Rodriguez (loveleemonicaa) | 1 comments Hey everyone, I'm Monica!

I am an aspiring author with a few story ideas that are currently being explored. I picked up writing again by starting a blog and recently turned that into a website, but I'm wanting to get myself back on track with fiction. I'm learning that my strengths as an aspiring author are in plot and I need to work on my character development. I'm hoping this book club will help me find my favorite book on writing and jump start one of my story ideas into a focused path towards my first novel.

Thanks for starting this Mollie!

Veronica | 1 comments Hi! I'm ViVí, aspiring author/illustrator. I wanted to be part of a community of other aspiring authors and learn more about the editing process. My favorite book on writing is: The Wonderbook: an illustrated guide to writing imaginative fiction. This book is kinda text-bookish. It's a great guide, super fun and visually AH-mazing!

message 7: by Chris (new)

Chris (xffr) I'm Chris. I am managing editor for a small medical alumni alumni association magazine and I'm interested in editing, especially, and perhaps pursuing it as a freelancer or at least in a more focused way. I'm not sure which kind of editing, a reason I'm intrigued by #writerlyreads.

I am a little ashamed (bordering on a lot) to admit that I can't think of a writing or editing book I've read recently, let alone at all. I remember reading a few pages of the Ueland and King books mentioned already, and I was a little giddy at the potential, in particular with King's. I'm also eager to read Lamott's book and to finish Strunk and White's classic. I can say that I have a number of writing/editing books on my shelf to read, so another hope in joining this group is that I will find some extrinsic motivation here to make a dent in that selection! I'm glad I came across your booktube channel, Mollie. Thanks for getting this started.

message 8: by Gillian (new)

Gillian Church (gilliwrites) | 4 comments Hi everyone! I'm Gillian. I am a technical writer for a software company, but I am also an aspiring fiction author. I joined #WriterlyReads because I'm interested in reading along with the group and discussing these writerly books!

My favorite book on writing is definitely Bird by Bird, which I first read at the recommendation of the professor who kicked off my technical writing career.

Hi Sarah! Awesome! Love that you're joining us. I'm curious what class you're taking ;). I **think** I have If You Want to Write, but I don't think I've read it! I honestly can't remember!!

YAY! Chris, so glad you're joining us. And don't feel shame at all about not reading a lot of editing/writing books... there are SO MANY classic writing books I haven't read. I'm hoping this group will change that for all of us!!

So awesome! Yes, Bird by Bird is EVERYTHING. Love that you're coming from a technical side of editing but that you want to expand into fiction. Very cool. I've found that I enjoy tech editing more than I realized I would! Glad you're here!

I'm taking a course through a site a freelance editor created called Proofread Anywhere the course is General Proofreading Theory and Practice. I'm having a hard time finding any resources/courses on editing as most things I find are geared towards ESL, so when I saw this I jumped at the chance!
It's worth the read! I found it so inspiring. :)

That's really cool. I've never heard of it! I'll have to check it out. I know what you mean about ESL courses. They do seem to be everywhere! I took a proofreading course through the Editorial Freelancers Association a while back and loved it! The book for the course, however, proved to be more helpful. It's called McGraw-Hill's Proofreading Handbook by Laura Anderson. I still reference it frequently!

Oh, I'll be sure to get my hands on the book at the very least! Thanks for the suggestion!

message 17: by Vivian (new)

Vivian (vivikatreads) | 7 comments Hi everyone! I'm Katherine, joining as an aspiring author. My background is in editing (mostly technical reports and marketing materials), but as I started looking into book editing and taking some classes on it, I realized pretty quickly that I wanted to be on the writer's side of things when it came to novels. My favorite writing books are actually these tiny Writer's Little Instruction Books by Paul Raymond Martin, mainly for sentimental reasons. They're just full of thoughtful quotes about writing (not really a lot of depth), but they were my first "writing books" and fueled my writing passions for many years. I was about 12 when I got them, and OF COURSE I still have them haha!

message 18: by Merideth (new)

Merideth Hi I'm Merideth, I am an aspiring editor/author and I am here to learn more about both since I just signed up for fall classes to finish my bachelor's degree in English. I haven't been in taken a college class for about 4 years so I'm very rusty. My first jumps into writing and editing were from discovering fan fiction as a kid. I love to read and always have. I have started writing several stories through life has gotten in the way of continuing them. So I am hoping to get back to it and discover which process I am more passionate about: writing or editing. I do not have a favorite book on writing and/or editing, although I have previously read our first book: Gotham Writers' Workshop Writing Fiction. I hope to have a favorite after reading more of books on writing.

Seriously so pumped that you're joining us! I haven't heard of Writer's Little Instruction Books, but I love the nostalgia associated with them. So many of my favorite writing books are favorites because of sentimental reasons! I'm hoping to include a mix of practical writing instruction and less concrete "advice" from beloved authors!

YAY! Also, so glad we have such a fun mix of writers and editors... I was expecting mostly editors or mostly writers for some reason, lol. Glad you're here! And glad you already had the book ;).

Jacqueline Ehler | 1 comments Hi there! I'm Jackie - manager, mom, volunteer and aspiring writer. I have a few projects in the early stages but am looking to get a bit of inspiration in order to continue my writing journey.

I have just started Gotham Writers' Workshop Writing Fiction and think it will be a great tool to help me get back on track.

message 22: by Elana (last edited Aug 31, 2017 03:54AM) (new)

Elana | 1 comments Hi everyone! I'm Elana and I am an aspiring author. I'm new to everything, and I've been working on my debut novel for a little while. I'm also working on creating a website/blog. I found Mollie's channel on youtube and love her advice and content, so I decided to join and give it a go. I haven't read many, but I like John Truby's book, The Anatomy of Story. I'm looking forward to reading and learning with you guys!

I forgot to add, 27 Fiction Writing Blunders- And How Not To Make Them by James Scott Bell. :)

Anna (lion_reads) | 1 comments Hi all! I am Anna. A one-time writer, currently working in publishing with the goal of one day becoming an editor. Having finished my editing courses, I'm desperate to keep learning about editing and writing. I also love the sense of community Mollie created.

My favourite editing book is actually on grammar: Sin and Syntax by Constance Hale. Its fun approach to grammar rules got me through my copy editing class and I still use it as a quick reference.

message 24: by Gimel (new)

Gimel Samera (gmlsmr) Hello! I'm Gimel and a fellow aspiring author. I've loved storytelling since I was a kid and have worked on a few short stories but would love to publish a novel one day. I've also dabbled into editing for online magazines for a while and would love to grow in this area too. I haven't read a lot of books on writing and/or editing but one of my favorites has to be "On Writing" by Stephen King - a cliche choice but it's so good!

message 25: by Em (new)

Em (emanne) Hi everyone! I'm Emily, an aspiring author. I have a degree in history so I like to mix historical research with fantasy! I'm joining so that I can learn about resources for improving my writing and find a community of other authors. I always wish that I had done some sort of creative writing or editing course when I was still in school, and I figure now is my chance! Like many others, my favorite book on writing is Stephen King's "On Writing"

message 26: by Becky (new)

Becky Hello! Sorry I'm a little late to the game, but I couldn't resist joining in. My name is Becky and I'm an aspiring editor. I'm currently working towards a freelance proofreading career as a place to begin with editing being my main occupation down the road. I've been a stay at home mom for the past 7 years, so this is a brand new career path for me. I'm looking for any and all ways to improve proofreading and editing skills and believe #WriterlyReads is a great place to do this.

I don't have any favorite books on writing yet, but I expect participating in this group will change that. So glad to meet everyone and thanks to Mollie for starting the group!

Shannon Dempsey (shannonhdempsey) | 4 comments Hi, my name is Shannon Dempsey. I'm an aspiring writer and joined #WriterlyReads to learn more about writing and the community. I'm also interested in editing and thinking about joining the publishing world.
I'm starting my first year of college to get a BA in English Literature. At the moment I don't have a favorite book on writing, but hope to have one soon.

Hi everyone! WOW. I'm blown away by how many of us there are now. :) Thanks for all of the introductions. I love that we're all bringing different backgrounds and interests to the group. I'm also LOVING all of the book recs! Keep them coming!

message 31: by Mike (new)

Mike | 3 comments Hey, my name is Mike. I have no experience as a writer and I don't know if I want to write novels or screenplays but I have this strange urge to write things. I'm excited to participate, read some good books, and hopefully write a couple good sentences. :)

message 32: by Paul (new)

Paul Weil Hello, My name is Paul Weil and I am a writer. My first book was self-published in May of this year but I am going to take it down after realizing that it needs another good edit and another proofread. Lesson learned there. I am looking to work with editors, especially aspiring ones who are prepared to take on my projects as experiments in training as I really cannot afford to pay anyone until I start generating income from my books. I recognize that writing and editing are very different skills with separate skills sets.

Elena (booksheart) | 1 comments Hi everyone! I'm Elena and I'm a reader, writer, editor, translator and soon to be PhD and medical copy-writer. So my life is all about writing and reading. I joined the group because I love Mollie's videos on Youtube and I want to learn more, meet more people and just find my community.

You can find my writing all over the internet, but I mostly blog at Bodies in the Library () about contemporary crime fiction.

It is really nice to be here and I hope to get to meet you all :)
