You can however go to his website, there are a couple prequel short stories there for free and showcase him encountering Murphy for the first time, but they aren't required. I agree with Rachel, its just to show Dresden didn't just appear on the planet with the start of the first book.
There is one book later on that does reference a short story and Butcher asked forgiveness of his fans for making that mistake (and I was one of those who had NOT read that particular story).
The usual rule is that a writer shouldn't require readers to follow up with the short stories for important plot points, short stories are generally asides that are fun to read but don't affect the overall series arc. After all, some shorts are really hard to hunt down, and can get expensive buying all those anthologies (though now with shorts being their own ebooks that might change)

I read the first one not long ago ,and I enjoyed it, good character and I line the urban fantasy,i good a few more books I gotta eat before I start full moon but I'm definitely hooked
I am finally starting on the Dresden books. I have competed book 1 and just started book 2, I'm assuming I'm reading in the correct order (Storm Front & now Fool Moon) based on the list inside the front cover.
My question: there seems to be quite a few references to adventures he has prior to whatever is happening. For example he just made mention of a trip to Minnesota where someone thought that they saw something in a lake ... so I'm wondering if I am reading in the correct order or if these other adventures are reflected on later ???
