Hello all! Starting up the monthly discussions for December 2017 book-of-the-month suggestions. This discussion is for a brand new category called BOOKSHELF CATCH-UP.

This is a catch-up book club, after all. For this category, you can nominate any book that the group has previously read. For a list of books that the group has previously read and discussed, please see the bookshelf.

I'll start off by suggesting a group read that I personally missed - The Sun Also Rises by Ernest Hemingway.

Sarah | 728 comments Did we vote on November books yet? It's Sunday, my lazy brain is drawing a blank.

Sarah | 728 comments I'll just list all of the ones I want to read next:

All the Light We Cannot See
American Gods
The Kite Runner
Memoirs of a Geisha

Martina Bučková | 145 comments I second All the Light We Cannot See as I always wanted to read but so far did not find time to do so.

Leesa I second 'All the light we cannot see.' Hoping the other two will be short enough this month that I find time to squeeze this in!

message 17: by D.L. (new)

D.L. | 15 comments I'll second Little Women too.

Allegra | 251 comments I'll second A Christmas Carol and The Kite Runner (early returns are not looking good).

As a general comment on this new category...
Since old discussions are not taken down, and since everyone doesn't read the books at exactly the same time anyway, I would suggest reserving this list for titles the group read at least 6 months ago (or even a year). All the Light We Cannot See has comments in the current discussion as recently as late August; it's still fresh enough in my mind for comment.
Opinions? Thoughts?

Totally get that. The plan I have in mind is that we can only re-read a book once every 12 months, aka if it wins this category it cannot be re-read by the group again for 12 months. May make sense to broaden that to ALL books read within the past 12 months.
Might leave it alone for now and see how it works for a few months, then institute this rule if it makes sense?

Leesa Is there a way to link the current read to the old thread Kasey? That way, those in the group who have already read the book and commented are still involved and they can join in from where they left off, rather than reciting everything again in a new thread?

Hi Leesa - the plan is to move the old threads back into the "currently reading" folder if/when books are voted as official bookshelf re-reads for the group - I agree with you, better to discuss with all and be able to see old comments rather than start completely anew.

message 23: by Cheryl (new) - added it

Cheryl (cherylllr) I agree that books recently discussed should not be eligible, and that new discussion should be connected to old (or even just added on to same threads!).

I think down the line setting a limit like that would make sense.
Right now though, the group bookshelf isn't all that big since this group hasn't been around for all that long. It would limit options significantly right now.
