Coraline is a good idea. I saw the movie and own the book but never read it.

I went to see Star Wars two days ago and I saw preview for Ready Player One and A Wrinkle in Time, both books I haven't read. I may go see the movie first then read the book to fill this categorie. So many choices.

message 152: by Ellie (new)

Ellie (ellieactive) I just read Me Before You for this :)

message 153: by Sarah (new)

Sarah | 20 comments I'm going to listen to the audiobook of Laura for this one.

message 154: by Cait (new)

Cait (caitertot) | 6 comments I think I'm going to go with It by Stephen King. I have previously read the book, but that was 22 years ago and I'm ready for a reread, especially after watching the 2017 movie earlier this month.

Kristy Moore (llamalluv) | 81 comments Some maybe less common ones:

Cars is basically Doc Hollywood with automobiles, and Doc Hollywood is based on What? Dead Again?

Mrs. Winterbourne is based upon I Married a Dead Man

The Herbie the Love Bug movies are based upon Car, Boy, Girl by Gordon Buford.

The Eagle was based on The Eagle of the Ninth

O Brother, Where Art Thou? was based upon The Odessy

Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides is loosely based on On Stranger Tides

Gentlemen Prefer Blondes novel of the same name.

How Stella Got Her Groove Back

Juliebean (juliebean512) | 145 comments I didn't see that anyone added the book that I read for it. I read the first book in the] Last Apprentice series, Revenge of the Witch. The Seventh Son was based on it. The movie was kind of a flop but I liked it okay - I love the leading actor in it. And I had purchased the book on Kindle sale ages ago.

message 157: by MaryJane (new)

MaryJane the Seoulcialite | 1 comments Gone Girl! I enjoyed the movie but thought the book was much better.

message 158: by Leda (new)

Leda (jericho_) I think I'm re-reading Cloud Atlas, which I would suggest to anyone! :)

message 159: by Jessica (new)

Jessica | 1 comments I just read The Last Unicorn for this! I got it from my mother-in-law for christmas, because she knows I loved the movie as a kid :) I really enjoyed it!

Tania | 678 comments Bigsna wrote: "The Bourne Identity by Robert Ludlum - I've seen the movie but forgotten all the 'good stuff'details. Also, i've always wanted to read the Bourne series because of how famous they are!"

I've seen all the Bourne movies, which I love, and read several of the corresponding books, which are fantastic too. These are a great choice.

message 162: by Shelley (new)

Shelley | 230 comments In normal fashion, my plan for this prompt went out the window pretty quickly. I planned on Bridget Jones's Diary, but there was a long hold wait list for it. So I went with Jane Steele thinking that it was a retelling of Jane Eyre (which I LOVE). No. No. That had so little to do with Jane Eyre it was frustrating. Maybe if they hadn't pushed it so much I would have been ok, but it was so far from what I expected that it was ruined.

To make up for it I read Childhood's End, which was a mini series on SyFy. It was interesting to see how Clark pictured a 21st century utopia. Definitely a sci-fi classic if anyone is interested (and don't bother with the miniseries).

message 163: by Abigail (new)

Abigail | 2 comments I read Forrest Gump for this prompt, and it only left me feeling disappointed. It really only served as a reminder of why I always read the book before watching the movie. I don't say this very often, but I think Forrest Gump is one of those instances where the movie is better than the book.

message 164: by Jenn (new)

Jenn | 135 comments I'm thinking about going with Rabbit-Proof Fence (this could also fit a few other prompts) or The Golden Compass for this one.

message 165: by Katie (new)

Katie Eley (katiesbookishcorner) I’m reading Chocolat by Joanne Harris. So far I like it. I didn’t realize it’s the first book in a series!!!

message 166: by Krissy (new)

Krissy | 6 comments Three Days of the Condor is one of my favorite films. I just finished Six Days of the Condor that it was based on. I read it for the 2017 espionage challenge, but it works well here too. After seeing so may great titles on these lists, I may finely read a Nick Hornby book for this one for 2018.

message 168: by [deleted user] (new)

I've watched and really enjoyed the Chronicles of Shannara TV series - I would like to read the The Elfstones of Shannara by Terry Brooks for this challenge.

message 169: by Stephanie (new)

Stephanie Scott | 2 comments Breakfast at Tiffany’s was based on an excellent short story.

message 170: by Linda (new)

Linda Varick-cooper | 20 comments I'm reading The Princess Bride for this challenge. I'm enjoying it so far.

SadieReadsAgain (sadiestartsagain) | 767 comments Loes wrote: "I’ll be reading memoirs of a geisha. I actually bought the book after seeing the movie. Just never got around to reading it."

The movie is very good, but the book is even more beautiful.

message 172: by Torie (last edited Jan 07, 2018 08:19PM) (new)

Torie (wanderingtorie) | 21 comments I was going to read Princess Bride because it has been on my TBR for a while, but then I saw that one of the prompts is a book about a sport. I don't really want to read a book about a sport, specifically, so I have decided to read The Blind Side: Evolution of a Game for both prompts.

Torie (wanderingtorie) | 21 comments Sharmon wrote: "I will probably choose from
The Help

I have been wanting to read all of these and I have already seen all of these as movies."

The Help is one that I enjoyed both the book and the movie immensely. Often times, I find that the movie is lacking so many important details from the book, and so the book is usually more enjoyable for me. If you only had to chose one, my vote would be The Help. :)

message 174: by Michele (new)

Michele Lamb | 3 comments I chose “Fried Green Tomatoes at the Whistle Stop Cafe by Fannie Flagg for this one.... I struggled in finding a book! I almost never see a movie without reading the book first, if the book is an option.

Ruth Lanton (ruthla8) | 177 comments Brandyn wrote: "This is going to be a tough one for me because generally if I’m interested in a movie based on a book I make myself read the book first. Doesn’t always happen so there are lots of movies I haven’t ..."

I don't see why you can't re-read a book that you've read (but not this year) and already seen the movie for.

This is going to be tough for me because I don't watch a whole lot of movies. Generally, if a movie is popular, I'll read the book instead of watching the movie, to get the cultural references without having to sit through a noisy movie.

Hmm. I've seen a few Roald Dahl movies but never read any of his books (Matilda, James and the Giant Peach, Charlie and the Chocolate Factory) so maybe I'll read one (or all three) of those.

That's a great idea! I would see Ready Player One before I read the book, but I want that for my Cyberpunk prompt, so I plan on seeing Mudbound, because I would never have heard of the book if I hadn't seen billboards for the movie.

Kim | 209 comments MaryJane wrote: "Gone Girl! I enjoyed the movie but thought the book was much better."

Agreed! the book (Gone Girl) was much better than the film. This is one I would recommend reading FIRST! Nice twist(s) that would be spoiled by seeing the film first (the twists were there, but I don't think they were as impactful on film).

Now, The Girl on the Train, that one had some nice visual twists, and I wish I'd seen the film before reading the book.

message 178: by Kim (new)

Kim | 209 comments Leda wrote: "I think I'm re-reading Cloud Atlas, which I would suggest to anyone! :)"

Cloud Atlas was definitely one I loved reading AFTER seeing the film! I felt completely familiar with the characters (which I thought were perfect in the film), and could hear the voices in my head as I read. There were also plenty of scenes and details that didn't make it to the film, and that kept the reading fresh for me.

message 179: by Shannon (new)

Shannon I'm reading The Princess Bride by William Goldman for this prompt.

message 180: by Valeria (new)

Valeria | 5 comments not sure what to choose:
Blade Runner / Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep?
Drive (a movie which I adore!!!) / Drive

....and I've already read and seen Lord of the Rings, all the HP saga, Fight Club, the Godfather and Ask the dust so they're unfortunately out of list

message 181: by Crumb (new)

Crumb | 395 comments I feel like I ruined the experience of reading Gone Girl because I saw the movie first.. can I still read the book and enjoy it even if I have already seen the movie?

message 182: by Jessica (new)

Jessica | 36 comments I just finished The Virgin Suicides for this one.

message 183: by Lin (new)

Lin (gramatumaja) | 43 comments I first thought it would be a challange for me. It has been so long since I watched a good film or movie. So I inspected my bookshelfs. And Voilà! I have found some good ones:

The Running Man
The Help
The Silence of the Lambs
The Strange Case of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde
The Road

Who said wacthching TV is a pointless and stupid activity :D

message 184: by [deleted user] (last edited Jan 09, 2018 11:17AM) (new)

I finished the The Elfstones of Shannara for this.
I enjoyed the TV Series and although there's been a lot of differences between the book and the first season of the series I could relate to the characters because I could actually picture them.

Every time I read about Allanon I could hear the actor's (Manu Bennett) voice.

Loved the book and can't wait to read the The Wishsong of Shannara

Darci Day | 164 comments When I first saw this prompt, I immediately said 'oh good, All the King's Men has been sitting on my bookshelf forever'. Then I saw Jurassic Park on my mom's bookcase, and wondered how I've never read that before. So now I don't know.

message 187: by Lindsay (new)

Lindsay Bird (lindsaybird08) | 1 comments The Circle by Dave Eggers
Movie was alright, hopefully the book is better!

Yajaira "Yari" Irizarry | 4 comments P.S. I Love You is a TWOFER!
1. A book made into a movie you've already seen
AND from the Advanced List
1. A bestseller from the year you graduated high school

Catherine James | 24 comments Catherine wrote: "I think I'm going to read Forrest Gump - it's really the only movie that I've seen that I've never read the book for. I hear that the book is very different, too."

Forrest Gump is a book!?!?!? Why have I never heardof this....

I chose Gone Girl for this prompt, as I'd only just seen the movie a few weeks earlier. I loved the book, but kind of wish I hadn't chosen it. The book is great, but the movie was too, and it was such a close adaption, right down to the dialogue, that I felt like I was just re-reading what I had already watched not that long ago.

message 190: by Chloe (new)

Chloe (grrrlbrarian) | 33 comments A few more ideas:
The Woman in Black by Susan Hill (would be a nice quick read)
Derby Girl by Shauna Cross (the film was named Whip It)
Madame Doubtfire by Anne Fine (the film was named Mrs Doubtfire)
The Iron Man by Ted Hughes (the film was named The Iron Giant)
Bedknobs and Broomsticks by Mary Norton (she also wrote The Borrowers, which has been made into several films)

Roxanne Calderon | 1 comments Guess I'm going to finally knock out Bridget Jones Diary!

message 192: by Gitel (new)

Gitel Hesselberg | 4 comments I read What the Deaf Mute Heard. The movie is What the Deaf Man Heard. For the first time ever, I liked the movie much better than the book.

message 193: by Christina (new)

Christina (crissytina) | 83 comments This was a hard one as I am always hesitant to read the book if I've already seen the movie, but I've come up with the following options:
Shutter Island: I watched the movie a few years ago and from what I've seen in the review there is more in the book so actually looking forward to this one.

It: The boyfriend wants to watch the new version of this this weekend, so I may follow up with reading the book, in a few months haha

Nothing Lasts Forever: I had no idea the movie Die Hard was based on a book, but here it is! Long live John McClane! :)

message 194: by Amanda (new)

Amanda (amandamichellesmith) | 14 comments I've decided to be a rebel and use a TV show instead. My husband and I have been binge watching Turn. Amazing! After we've finished, I'm going to read Washington's Spies. I'm really excited about this one!

message 195: by willaful (new)

willaful This is a real challenge for me, because I read far more books than I see movies. I could have another whack at Fight Club, I suppose...

Chinook | 731 comments The show is pretty good - that moves the book up on my list to hear it’s good. I do enjoy her other books too.
