Hello team!

I'm not sure that I can pronounce our team's name, but I love the anagram for it :)

T.C is a very experienced Captain so I am "co-captain" as a back-up. I am running the challenge with the help of the other mods, so mostly I'll just be helping to read for the team and submitting our books if TC is not able to.

I'm looking forward to getting to know you all! :D

TC, I went and took a peek at your spreadsheet as well! Hope that's okay - I needed ideas on how to set up mine.

Ange (bentleyrise) | 484 comments Hey Teammates. I can see the spreadsheet. Team challenge newbie here, looking forward to it. Just finished my book now and don't know whether to start a new one or wait for the genre ... Does the book only count if its started after the challenge?

Turtlecollector Dennis | 1164 comments You can start it now if you like. Only the finish date matters. For this first week, it must be finished between July 12th and for you I believe sometime on Sun Jun 20th(noon Eastern Australia time)

Turtlecollector Dennis | 1164 comments Still waiting for Cheryl, Mollie and Susan to check in.

Also, Karen, I am trying to wait patiently for our genre to spell out. Surely, there must be some advantage to being on your team:)

Cheryl | 910 comments Hi, TC! Looking forward to the Challenge. I am having a bit of a technical challenge, here on this end, myself. I am not at home at my normal computer. My stepfather was killed in an accident a week ago and I have had to return home to help my mom for a few days. Her computer is antiquated and so is not so easy to use. I hope that I can find my way to all the info needed. I cannot bookmark things like I can on my personal computer at home. So, please be patient with me. I have my laptop with me, but have not gotten it set up with a hotspot yet. Hopefully I will be a contributing member from the start. Looking forward to getting the first genre.

Turtlecollector Dennis | 1164 comments Not sure, maybe the fact that he spends years and years trying to figure out time travel? And the fact that with time travel, there could possibly be no limit to what a person could accomplish?

Turtlecollector Dennis | 1164 comments Cheryl wrote: "Hi, TC! Looking forward to the Challenge. I am having a bit of a technical challenge, here on this end, myself. I am not at home at my normal computer. My stepfather was killed in an accident a..."

I am sorry about your stepfather. I have lots of patience and this game won't be too challenging.

I will post which genre we are trying to spell out each week. As long as you can check in to this thread to find that out you will be fine. Now that you have posted here, you should get notifications when a new post is made.

Basically, all you need to do is read books and make sure you add them to your shelf for this game with the date read. We will be trying to spell out a different genre each week and each letter we read will earn us points. If you can post here as you finish a book, that would help me keep things updated, but I will also periodically check your shelf to make sure I haven't missed anything and that the books are correctly on your team shelf.

Cheryl | 910 comments I thought I would introduce myself. Looking forward to getting to know all of you!

I live in Utah, but was born and raised in Missouri (and am in Missouri for 10 more days). I have been married for 32 years and have a 31 year old daughter. (My daughter just returned from a trip to Brazil for the World Cup...she is fluent in Portuguese.) I have a degree in Political Science and English. I have worked as an unpaid child advocate for 24 years. I am currently a candidate for the Utah House of Representatives. I love to cook and try new foods; I compete in cooking competitions and am actually appearing in the August Woman's Day magazine for one of my recipes.

I love to read! I am mostly into historical fiction and the classics. Right now, I am working on a goal of reading all of the Newberry Award winners, Pulitzer Prize winners for fiction, and Nobel Prize winners for literature.

message 25: by Turtlecollector Dennis (last edited Jul 12, 2014 12:07AM) (new)

Turtlecollector Dennis | 1164 comments I am so envious of your daughter. I would have liked to go there so much. I am making it a goal to make it to at least one World Cup game in my lifetime. I was jumping out of my chair like I was actually there during the US-Portugal game, it was so intense.

I have been working on reading The Modern Library list of 100 Best Books of the 20th Century, but it is taking me a long time(several years so far).

Turtlecollector Dennis | 1164 comments I live on the West Coast and have been a life-long reader. I will read just about anything and I work in a library so my book addiction is well supported. My parents gave me an ereader a few years ago, which I have now passed on to my sister since I bought myself a Nook and a Kindle, but I still prefer having an actual book in my hand. I believe my parents were really just tired of me asking for bookshelves as presents.

In my other spare time, I like to play games with my friends and family and do crafty things. I knit, crochet and cross-stich many gifts and my coworkers have been known to fight over them at white elephant gift exchanges.

One thing I don't do well is cooking, although lately I have been trying to branch out from easy regular dishes. I have been celiac from birth, and gluten-free options are so much more available than when I was a kid.

Ange (bentleyrise) | 484 comments We got an easy one for our first week! Do we just pick a letter and tell everyone?

I'm a 35 year old kiwi (New Zealander). Spent most of my 20s travelling the world and living in London and have spent my 30s back in nz with my husband and two kids 6 and 2. Haven't ventured over to North America yet apart from a 3 day stopover in Hawaii. It's on my bucket list and seeing as it's a pretty big place will have to do multiple trips or just spent a good few months there. Sadly my travelling days are over until my kids stop spending all my money :) hmmmm .... That may never stop right!

Sorry to hear your news Cheryl, and nice to meet you and Ange!

I am one of the mods here at NBRC and for some crazy reason I keep coming up with team challenge ideas.... at least this time I can play too ;)
I live in Sydney, Aus and have a 21 month old son. We are going to Fiji for a winter break soon so I won't be online much from Aug 1-9, but I will still be able to check books in as read.

Now, for our week 1 spin, I'm sorry I didn't do a better job and get a longer word! Oh well. I guess we can just try and re-read the word a few times :)
So probably best if you can let TC know what books you are intending to read this week and how they would fit into the spell-it-out.

How a "spell it out" works
Spell out the word(s) using the first letter in the book's title, the first letter in the author's first or last name, the first letter in the series name, or the first letter of a character's first, last, or nick-name. As always, if the first letter of a title starts with an indefinite or definite article ('A', 'An', 'The', etc.), you may use the first letter of the second word in the title to spell out your chosen word. If your book starts with a number (e.g. 24 Bones) use the number to determine the first letter (in this example, it would be T)

I am currently reading Anne of Avonlea, Deep Blue Secret and The Collected Works of A. J. Fikry

TC - I wil post how my books fit below. I think I and O will be hard so I'm going to do some research to see if I can't fit some in to cover off those letters. I will edit as I go

F The Collected Works of A. J. Fikry (or c,i; Character name AJ Fikry)
I The Collected Works of A. J. Fikry (or c,f ; Character Ismay Parrish)
C The Collected Works of A. J. Fikry (or i,f) Anne of Avonlea (Character Marilla Cuthbert)
T
I
O The One You Love (I have this for free on my kindle and can read if required) On the Edge (I have this on audio and can read if required)
N
Genre fiction - covered by The Collected Works of A. J. Fikry

I'm in for 2 books this week. I *will* read The Collected Works of A. J. Fikry this week. I can finish Anne of Avonlea, or pick up one of the "O" books instead. I will see what everyone else intends to read before deciding.

Ange (bentleyrise) | 484 comments sigh I have holiday envy Karen.

okay just started reading this arvo Endangered but it doesn't fit with any of the letters so I will start another book The Infection and can hopefully use endangered next week as its really good and I want to keep reading ha

Ok teamies
Our current BOM seems to be a great book to help spell out fiction

It can work for C,F or I ; it is a small book and pretty good from what I have read so far
The Collected Works of A. J. Fikry by Gabrielle Zevin

message 34: by Turtlecollector Dennis (last edited Jul 12, 2014 06:55AM) (new)

Turtlecollector Dennis | 1164 comments Sorry, I tried and tried to stay up and then missed the posting by less than 30 min! At least this week works out well with the books I already need to read so I don't have to hunt around for books.

Books I have to read in the next week:
F,C: Avenger(author Forsyth, character Cal Dexter)
I: Seduction in Death(series In Death)
C,T: Midnight Awakening(character Tegan, character Elise Chase)
T: Top Secret Twenty-One(title)
O,N: Night Huntress(series Otherworld, title)

I have a couple more In Death books, I could possibly read another I book

Turtlecollector Dennis | 1164 comments Well, Susan and Mollie still haven't checked in, so I will send them another PM.

Vi | 1729 comments Oops, I missed the chatter and everything. It was cleaning day today (which I hate) and I just got time to log in.

I'm from India, currently living in Singapore. I used to work but I'm a SAHM now to a 6 month old. Needless to say, life's a bit hectic. I have been a lifelong reader - both my parents are so I've had all the encouragement from them. Singapore's a great enabler too. The library collection here is just so great and with lot of branches. I read mostly on my Kindle but I'm trying out audio now.

TC, I wish I was good at crafting/knitting etc. My mother's excellent at them but sadly, I don't have the aptitude.

message 37: by Vi (new)

Vi | 1729 comments My reads are a little unpredictable nowadays but here are the books I've lined up:

T - Light In Shadow by Jayne Ann Krentz (character Ethan Truax)
I, C - Indiscreet by Carolyn Jewel (Title - I, author C)

I'm planning to listen to Dead Beat by Jim Butcher but I'm not sure if I can finish by July 20. I'll also list books tomorrow.

message 38: by Cheryl (new)

Cheryl | 910 comments I really brought the wrong books with me for the word this week. Unbelievable! I can read O Pioneers! by Willa Cather which would work for the "O" or the "C." For "T" or "N," I can read These Is My Words by Nancy E. Turner. I also have Little Bee by Chris Cleave for "C." I will start with O Pioneers. Let me know if you have a preference for my second book. I think I can do two books this week. Outside chance of the third. All three of these also work on the Fiction bonus, but I do not imagine that will be difficult to earn. Off to the races!

message 39: by Turtlecollector Dennis (last edited Jul 12, 2014 08:08AM) (new)

Turtlecollector Dennis | 1164 comments So for right now for our first read through, I have put in Light in Shadow for Vi and O Pioneers! for Cheryl.

I have listed them in Post 7 and in the spreadsheet.

On the spreadsheet I have also listed some of my other books that will fit into a second read through of Fiction, but I won't make it through all of them, just wanted to be prepared. Also, I have entered the other books that might be read for future read throughs for extra points. Based on how many books on average our team reads, it could be possible to read it 3 times.

Cheryl, maybe you can read These Is My Words as your second book since so far N is a difficult letter for us this week. We have several options for the other letters so far.

Great! You found us. Pick a letter to read and I will fit you in there. Any letter in FICTION will work. I am working my books around what the others are reading since I am most flexible.

message 43: by Wishbear (last edited Jul 12, 2014 09:03AM) (new)

Wishbear | 393 comments Sorry everyone. I started a new job this week and my computer time is a lot more limited then it was at my old job (one of the reasons for the change lol) and I've been exhausted when I get home. I am still reading though, just not using the computer.

So looking at my library requests, which were the books I was planning this week...would Hey, Nostradamus by Douglas Copland work for N? or would H be the letter to use? I'll look through my books and see if i have something else that would work.

I will also be finishing Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas this week so if we need another F, I'll have one.

Sorry this is disjointed, my boyfriend and his kids left for the lake this morning so I've been interrupted about 8 times trying to see them off.

ETA: Oh, I found an "I" that I can finish this week.
A Prayer for Owen Meaney by John Irving.

Turtlecollector Dennis | 1164 comments On my lunch break, I'll put you down for Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas this week for F and A Prayer for Owen Meaney for I OR O and see what you get finished this week. Either or both of those books are great.

Your first book you mentioned would go by H for the title but could be used as C for the author.

Right now I just need to know what book you plan on finishing this week so I can arrange it properly. We are spelling out FICTION as many times as we can and you can still use any of those letters.

Hooray! We have all of our team :) welcome :)

TC - would you rather me read a "c" or a "o" as my second book? (first book can be f,c or i)
Or if there is another letter you'd prefer I'll dig out something else as a second book, just let me know

Turtlecollector Dennis | 1164 comments I put you down as C for your second book with Anne of Avonlea on the spreadsheet if that is still all right. I think we have enough "O"s for this week and maybe we will need another "O" next week too.

No problems. Actually the O audio also works for an I aswell the author. So I may start it anyway and then I can push to finish it if need be or hold it over for another week :)
