ALL about UNO

All about the UNO Team Challenge

About this team challenge

This is a 3 month team challenge starting /b>1 February 2018

At the end of the challenge 30 April 2018 the team with the most points wins!

At the start of each month each team is given a minimum 13 hands of 7 "UNO" cards

The idea is to "play" each hand for points. It is up to the team how many "hands" they can get through in the month, but they must play one hand completely before being able to get points for the next

The team can choose to skip an entire hand to get to the next one, but they are not given a replacement hand. (You can only skip one hand in a month)

UNO Cards
From Wikipedia
The deck consists of 108 cards, of which there are twenty-five of each color (red, green, blue, and yellow), each color having two of each rank except zero. The ranks in each color are zero to nine, "Skip", "Draw Two" and "Reverse" (the last three of these being classified as "action cards"). In addition, the deck contains four each of "Wild" and "Wild Draw Four" cards.

Melindam | 4410 comments IMPORTANT

*Only books STARTED after the challenge begins can count. The challenge starts on Thursday 1, 2016 at 7pm AEDST (Australian Eastern Daylight Savings Time). To see when this is in your time zone, use this .

*Books must be more than 100 pages in length. If it is a Childrens book or a graphic novel, we need to verify it is more than 25,000 words on arbookfind.com.

*Your finished books need to be on your Uno shelf AND marked as "read" for them to count.

* Please make notes of how your book may count. The more options we have the better! (Letters used in UNO are Z,O,T,H,F,I,V,E,S,N,K,P and of course if another team member has read the book before. Please friend our team members!)

*For coloured cards, the cover needs to be 50% or more of the colour by using this . If in doubt, ask me or Rachael as we can check it and/or take to the captains group for another opinion

* Bearing in mind that some of us are more competitive than others, of course we'd love to get points, but the main aim of the game is to have fun, read lots and get to know each other :)

Melindam | 4410 comments All about the February MINI CHALLENGE

This challenge consists of two parts.

¸¸.*¨*•♫ ¸¸.*¨*•♫ ¸¸.*¨*•♫ ¸¸.*¨*•♫ ¸¸.*¨*•♫

First Part

In your own team thread, you will find a post with a link to all the books recommended by the players of the other teams.

As a team, you may choose up to 3 teams whose recommendations you would like to read from.
As a team, you may then read 2 recommended books per team you have chosen, bringing you to a total of 6 books.
For every recommended book read, your team will gain 15 points, up to a maximum of 90 points.
Series substitutes are of course allowed (i.e. if book #1 in a series is recommended and you are up to book #4 of that series, you can read book #4).
In case you happen to have read ALL the books that have been recommended by your chosen team(s), you may read a different book written by the same author(s).
For some added fun, when you finish a recommended book, please stop by that team's thread to tell them what you thought of the book. (Even if you didn't like it - sometimes that can bring up interesting discussions.)
Then report back to your own thread and post a link to your comment (they will be added to the spreadsheet by the (co-)captains). Every comment will give you an additional 5 points.

¸¸.*¨*•♫ ¸¸.*¨*•♫ ¸¸.*¨*•♫ ¸¸.*¨*•♫ ¸¸.*¨*•♫

Second Part

For this part of the challenge, you will read books that can in some way be connected to the recommendations of all the teams you have not read from in the first part of the challenge.

As a team, you may read up to 2 books per team.
(THIS IS JUST INFO FOR US: 22 teams, minus yourself, minus the 3 from the first part, leaves 18 teams to read from = 36 books)

How does this work exactly? There are 2 ways to do this:
1. You can match the book covers to each other.
2. You can match the characters, settings, plots or any other thing you can think of.

For example: Someone on Team A has read A Man Called Ove. The cover has a man and a cat on the cover. Someone from Team B can then read a book with either of those two things on the cover (or both), like for example Storm Front, which also has a single man on the cover.
A Man Called Ove by Fredrik Backman Storm Front (The Dresden Files, #1) by Jim Butcher

OR, you can find a different reasoning, such as:
- reading a book based in Sweden
- reading a book with a grumpy male protagonist
- reading a book where someone discovers a new purpose in life
- reading a book with a character who has the same name as a character in A Man Called Ove

The reasoning can be of your own choosing. No matter how far-fetched it might seem, we will accept it as long as the explanation is good and, most of all, plausible. (For questions whether or not the reasoning is acceptable, please check with your (Co-)Captains.)

However, there are a few exceptions to this. It is not enough to say a book "connects" due to having the same book specifications, such as:
- genre
- page numbers
- publisher
- date of publication
- ŷ rating

The edition you are reading counts. Editions other than the one you are reading will not be accepted in making your reasoning count.
For every book read, your team will gain 10 points.

This is an optional mini challenge for our UNO players.

This mini challenge is all about spell-it outs with game names!

¸¸.*¨*•♫ ¸¸.*¨*•♫ ¸¸.*¨*•♫ ¸¸.*¨*•♫ ¸¸.*¨*•♫

To Begin

Solve this crossword puzzle

description

The missing letters are what you will need to read for in your spell-it-outs.
For example, if the crossword key said:
"4 Across: _NO" the missing letter is U (to make an answer of UNO) and so for that word you would need to read for the letter U using the spell it out rules below.

“Spell-it-out" rules:
Letter needs to be the first letter in the book title, author first name or surname, character name or nickname, or setting. Articles (a/an/the) can be ignored in the book titles. For this spell-it-out, you can also use the first letter in the series name AND you can use cover items on books (e.g. an Avocado on the cover can be used for A)
Where the key says "digit" (in 8 Down) that means that you are looking for a number (e.g. 7) and not a letter

Only books read March 14-31 will count for this mini challenge.
⭐Books started before March 14th, 7pm AEDST do not count for this mini challenge.
The usual book length requirement for UNO applies.
⭐Books used for this mini challenge do not need to be separate books for what you are claiming for your UNO hands.
For each letter read you will receive 5 points, except for some BONUS letters worth 10 points (these are highlighted in purple on your spreadsheet)
For each word completed, you will receive a bonus 15 points
A countdown to the start of this mini challenge can be found HERE.

The mini challenge starts on Wednesday March 14, 2018 at 7pm AEDST (Australian Eastern Daylight Savings Time). To see when this is in your time zone, use this countdown.

Main cities, FYI: Note due to daylight savings some times have changed from last month
Tokyo: 5pm, 14th March
London: 8am, 14th March
New York: 4am, 14th March
San Francisco: 1am, 14th March

Melindam | 4410 comments Dear Team Neptune!

I am very excited to start this New Year / New UNO Challenge with you as Team captain!

I chanced upon this fantastic challenge last year and couldn't wait to participate again this year. This will be my first time as captain, and what I lack in expertise, I will try to make up for with enthusiasm. Thankfully, we have some seasoned UNO-players on the Team, so I do not fear.

Some other intro-info about me. I am from Hungary and live near Budapest. I am working for an EU institute dealing with Grants as personal/grants assistant maybe that's why I am attracted to spreadsheets. :)
Reading is my absolute favourite pastime. My mother is a librarian and I practically grew up in a Library. I mostly read in English, sometimes in Hungarian and occasionally in German. Since I have a 4-year-old son, I don't have the chance to read as much I'd like - but commuting on a train does help. :)
My favourite genres are: fantasy, classics, children/middle grade and golden age detective fiction.
I also love listening to music while reading and otherwise and doing yoga.

I am looking forward to getting to know you all and hope we will have fun together with this challenge.

My name is Elen, 22 y/o and I am from Tallinn, Estonia. Currently, I am studying at uni and this year I am going to graduate and getting my BSc in Genetic engineering.
I am so excited to read books with you all. It's my first time participating in UNO team challenge.
Favourite genres: YA, horror, crime, dystopian, fantasy, science fiction etc. I am open-minded to try new genres.
I read books in English, Estonian and sometimes in Russian.
Also, I love to listen to music and watch TV shows.

Իí Hi everyone!
I'm very excited for this challenge to start! My name is Iza, but my screenname here on GR (and some other places) is Իí, you can call me by either of the names, whichever you like =)
I'm 25 y/o and I live in Leiden, The Netherlands, but I've been in Australia for the last three months and I have two more to go. I'll be back home on March 2nd.

This is my first time doing this challenge (I signed up to Perks of being a book addict just too late last year), but it looks like so much fun!
I read a little bit of everything, but I'm very picky about my tastes, so a lot of books often disappoint me. I like an original story with interesting ambiguous characters. Generally speaking my fave genres are horror, music, LGBTIA+, fantasy and SCI-FI. I almost always listen to music while I read and I read everywhere for short periods of time.

Other than reading I have a lot of other interests. I love everything that involves stories: Lecures, TVseries/movies and talking to interesting people.
I also love music (listening, festivals, playing piano&guitar, discovering new artist, dancing (not well), learning music theory), very much!
I'm also interested in traveling, learning Italian, teaching (i'm a primary school teacher in Holland), math & puzzels, I LOVE snow and coffee and I do a lot of long distance hiking.

Enough about me, can't wait to start! x

Rachael (rambleon) | 484 comments Hey everyone, just checking in!

My name is Rachael and I will be your co-captain. It's actually my first time so I don't know how this will go but I will do my best :)

I am 20, (21 by the time UNO officially begins). I'm from Leeds, England and I'm a uni student studying Psychology and Criminology 100 miles from home.

l've been the biggest bookworm since I was little and it's only gotten worse as I've discovered more of the amazing online community. But I love it! My favourite genre is definitely fantasy but I've been drawn to sci-fi a lot recently. I also read contemporary and other genres when the mood strikes me. I'll pretty much read anything, especially if it involves magic or competition.

My other hobbies include music (I can't play it but I love hearing it), travelling, tv and movies. Also coffee, I love coffee.

I'm so excited for the challenge to start and to get to know you all. I'm sure we'll make a great team! x

Fortunately we have awesome UNO-"Veterans", like Sarah, and enthusiastic Team-Members, so we shall be all right. :)

Elen | 746 comments Question to all team members. Maybe it's too early to ask, but why not.
How are we dividing the hands or picking who does what card?
Especially the first hand.

message 23: by Melindam (last edited Jan 06, 2018 09:16AM) (new)

Melindam | 4410 comments Hi Elen,

IT's never too early to prepare. :))

I already posted the 1st hand we need to play before getting to the next one in message 7, unless we decide to skip it altogether (I hope not!).

If it's not too early, I would like to ask all of you to check the hand and see if you have books you could read for at least one task. Please remember they only count if you start reading them on 1 February!
We could put the names down to each task to see if the hand can be accomplished. This is not obligatory, of course.

The other option could be that we just pick a few books we want to read and list all the different cards they work for. We will keep track of all the books and the cards in our team spreadsheet. I'll make sure to keep track and let everyone know if there are any special cards we need badly to complete.

I tend to like the first option myself, but I will not press anyone, in case you prefer the other. We can work it out among ourselves I am sure.

message 24: by Nikki (new)

Nikki (levistorm) | 110 comments Hi everyone!

My name's Nikki, I'm 23 and I'm from the Netherlands. This is my first time participating, but I'm super excited!
I'm currently doing a short study to enter a study called design, where you can learn all about graphic design, but also interior architecture or illustration. I have done a study on interior design before though!

I absolutely love reading, although last year I had a big bad reading slump and haven't read that much, but I really want to pick it up again this year and read more than last year! I honestly don't have a favourite genre, I read pretty much any genre as long as the subject of the book speaks to me.
Even though I'm Dutch, I almost exclusively read in English, because thoughts and meaning always gets lost in translation and I never get that same feeling when reading a translated book.

My other hobbies are writing, drawing but I also love 3D modelling, it's a pretty big part of my life right now where I create tons of models for a game and I'm really having much fun with that.

I'm looking forward to reading with you all in this challenge and getting to know all of you!

I like the first idea. I am headed back to uni tomorrow so I will check then to see what cards I could potentially play when the challenge starts!

message 28: by Elen (last edited Jan 06, 2018 10:49AM) (new)

Elen | 746 comments No SKIPPING! Let's try to accomplish all hands.

I like both ideas. First one, I can reserve a card I am going to read. Also, the second one is good, bc captain can decide what book worked for what hand the best way (one book could be used for multiple cards (character, title, author etc.).

Also, I think that most challenging ones are coloured cards. Maybe thous we should pick already or something. I donno :P

message 29: by Elen (new)

Elen | 746 comments In hand one I can cover cards 2 and 4.
Card 2: "The Killer Next Door" by Alex Marwood (title starting with T)
Card 4: "Bossypants" by Tina Fey (author surname starts with F)

message 30: by Sarah (new)

Sarah | 1012 comments Hi everyone!

And Uno time is here again! I'm always happy when Uno comes around, the first Uno was my first ever team challenge, and I've been hooked on them ever since.

I live in the UK, and of course I read a lot. I'll give most things a try, but I think my most read genres are mystery, historical fiction, fantasy, and sci-fi. My least favourite are romance and horror.

Looking forward to reading with old friends and new. :)

My shelf is uno-2018

message 31: by Nikki (new)

Nikki (levistorm) | 110 comments I like the first idea as well! I think if everyone tries to get options for most cards we can probably figure out a good way everyone can read a book they like and get all the cards in the hand!

Welcome Camilla! Glad you are joining us! I think we are/will be a great team. :))))

Իí i don't really like deciding what to read super early on and I often change my mind on what to read, so I prefer the second option, but seeing I'm a minority on that I will try to work out what I'll be reading as early as possible.

Also, I might notice the book fits more cards later on, because I don't know all the character names/setting before I start reading, so don't miss filling card because of that!

Awesome, Elen. This means for Hand 1 we will need 3 more books for cards 6 & 8 + wild

Camilla | 1251 comments I can take the 8 in the first hand, I have The Enemy from the library and need to read it fairly early in February anyway.

Re strategy; from earlier experience I would add that trying to find books that fit the colour cards is sometimes a bit difficult, so I suggest that those could be completed pretty quickly (even if we're mainly working towards completing earlier cards), if somebody has something suitable.

Իí, that is totally all right. In this case, what I ask you to do once you complete a book, please check which cards it may work for and post it here with the following info:

Title:
Author:
Date read:
Card it could work for/: (after finishing/while reading, please keep track of character/place names, whether it's standalone or part of a series).

Thanks.

Melindam | 4410 comments Dear Team,

considering our reading habits/preferences, I think we can successfully mix options 1 and 2.
Those of us who like to put their names to tasks in advance are welcome to do it.
Those of us that prefer the "random" method -no pressure!- just make sure you post all the info about your books once you completed them.

Thanks Camilla, I will put your name down for Card 8.

I have a "coloured" series of Agatha Christie books, so I think I will be able to manage a few. I will list them and try to see what could work.

According to the colour tool (please see message 6) it is 75.8% golden yellow, so it's perfect. Let's reserve it for it for the colour card in Hand 2 as it is also 1st in a series. I am sure we will be able to cover card 6 in Hand 1 more easily.

Melindam | 4410 comments In the Team Spreadsheet, there is an extra sheet for book tracking and I already put down the books the we have volunteered so far. You can check it out.

Also, I just saw, that Hand 2 has Draw 2 and Card 1. If no one else is going to cover them somehow else than Pretty Little Liars should be fine for that too :D

Melindam | 4410 comments I'll check later on if the colour card can be used for Draw 2.

It can. Draw two will work for any two cards of your choice in that hand. :)
