If you like military SF with female captain, try the Jessica Keller Chronicles. First one is Auberon (Jessica Keller Chronicles #1) by Blaze Ward Auberon, author Blaze Ward.

If you are open to other types, I always recommend the Liaden Universe which has several good entry points. Try starting with Agent of Change which is free as ebook, or The Agent Gambit which is an omnibus that includes Agent of Change. Authors are Sharon Lee and Steve Miller.

Mike Mullen | 17 comments Well if you haven't read it already I have to recommend Jack Campbell's 'Lost Fleet' series. Starting with Dauntless it gets progressively better and more involving as it goes along.

Trike | 755 comments The Mageworlds series by Debra Doyle and James D. Macdonald are basically Star Wars with the serial numbers filed off. The protagonist is a mash-up of Han Solo and Princess Leia, a hotshot smuggler running from a life of privilege who gets involved in bigger things. The first one is The Price of the Stars.

Interestingly, the cover is an accurate portrayal of the main character when she adopts a disguise. Not too many artists go to the trouble of doing that.

The Price of the Stars (Mageworlds, #1) by Debra Doyle

Mageworlds series is Space Opera, not hard SF. There is psi/magic involved too, similar to the way Jedis use the Force.

And many of the Liaden Universe books have a female protagonist or co-protagonist. In Agent of Change there are two main point of view characters and one is female.

How about the Kris Longknife series, beginning with Mutineer? I haven't read them, but they're on my list.

I also recommend the Silver Ships series, beginning with The Silver Ships. The primary protagonist is a man, but there are several strong female characters, and some great AIs. It's a fairly new, independently published, series, but there already 10 books out.

Ronnie (ronnieb) | 322 comments I recommend the USS Merrimack series by R.M. Meluch.

Old fashioned space opera that reads like a little bit of Star Trek, a little bit of Battlestar Galactica, a dash of Starship Troopers, and a big chunk of I, Claudius all rolled up into one.
