I just finished the Marvelous Mrs. Maisel's first season. Aside from spending too much time on her schmuck husband, I really enjoyed it.

Michele | 1215 comments Black Mirror!!! So amazing.

Also (finally) spouse and I are binge-watching Game of Thrones. I was positive that it could never ever be as good as people said it was, but it is. And maybe better. A certain person just got eaten by dogs, which made me cheer, and a certain person's name just got explained, which made me cry. Also DRAGONS.

I tried Black Mirror, and the first two episodes were just way too rapey for me to get into. I'm led to believe it gets into things outside of unwanted sex, but I gotta find a way to scour my brain first!

CB, I used to love Project Runway!! I haven't watched it in ages though. My new reality loves are Great British Bake Off and Fixer Upper.

I am also a fan of 'Game of Thrones' but now have to cool my heels until 2019! I saw the season finale of 'Vikings' and loved it, but what a bloodbath! (view spoiler) I am starting to hate him about as much as King Geoffrey in GoT. One series still running right now that I love is 'Lucifer'. Tom Ellis is perfect in the role of Lucifer and is one hell of an actor, on top of being an excellent singer and pianist. I also like very much the other main actors/actresses in the series and believe that 'Lucifer' is one of the best series running presently.

On the negative side, I dropped off 'Knightfall' and 'Star Trek: Discovery'. 'Knightfall' pissed me off with the massacre it makes of the true history of the Templars, with its often downright stupid plots and twists and with the so-so acting. As for 'Star Trek: Discovery', I did my best to try liking it, but the nearly caricatural depiction of the Klingons in it turned me off very quickly. The scenarios and acting are also less than overwhelming to me.

Michel, do you think you can put the thing about Vikings behind tags? I imagine some folks might not have gotten their yet :)

message 7: by CBRetriever (last edited Jan 28, 2018 04:21PM) (new)

CBRetriever | 5970 comments I don't watch Fixer Upper much any more after I found out the two of them belong to a church with a pastor that condemns same sex marriage and views homosexuality as a sin. They've had every other kind of couple or single person on their show, but not a lgbt couple or person.

And it really bothers me that she wears pants, but the girls are always in dresses. Property Brothers for me.

Yeah, that does suck. I think they responded to it, though. I remember reading it and going "well, I guess I can still watch this when I am sick." Property Bros, also good :)

Sarah | 3136 comments Seconding/thirding Vikings!! Though it isn’t the same since... well. You know.

That is sadly, the only show I watch regularly as it airs.

I also love Impractical Jokers. This is my go to default program when I can’t actually pay attention but need background noise.

It actually looked pretty good- so if anyone here decides to check it out come back and let me know! It’s on NBC.

message 19: by Trike (new)

Trike Marvelous Mrs. Maisel lives up to its first word.

I’m currently watching curling as a warm-up for the Winter Olympics. I love me some curling.

I like The Flash and Legends of Tomorrow on CW. Fun silver age superhero stuff. The 4-part crossover between Flash, Legends, Arrow and Supergirl was excellent. It set an amazingly high bar for crossover events, starting with Barry and Iris wedding and ending with everyone teaming up to fight the Nazi-Earth version of Supergirl, Ultrawoman.

Shameless just finished its 8th season on Showtime tonight, hilariously crazy as ever.

The Crown on Netflix is superb, as is Queen Victoria on PBS. They really spent a lot of money on these shows.

Black Mirror is brilliant, easily some of the best science fiction on TV right now. It does start off intense, but later seasons are less in-your-face while still being serious. The episode about the woman who wakes up without her memory is jaw-droppingly brilliant. I absolutely hate, loathe, despise the tired trope of “character wakes up with no memory, so for me to praise that means it is something special.

Another show on Netflix I am loving is Travelers. It’s tremendously well-written and acted, pure Science Fiction. I can’t recommend it highly enough. It stars Eric McCormack (Will of Will & Grace) as one of numerous time travelers from an apocalyptic future who have been sent back to try and prevent the catastrophe that leads to an extinction level event.

As a filmmaker, I love the genius of their time travel method: they send a person’s mind back in time to a few seconds before someone dies, taking over the body. For instance, Eric McCormack’s character is an FBI agent who is killed in a shootout, so they insert the traveler’s mind into his body moments before he was meant to die. Right before the death scene, the actor grabs his or her head and screams as a countdown clock appears onscreen, and then the new personality overwrites the existing one.

No special effects, no sets or gizmos they have to build, just good old fashioned acting. Usually the person who dies is completely different from the person who replaces them, so the actors get to exhibit their range. In one case an elderly scientist is put into the body of a high school jock, in another a man is put into the body of a woman, and so on.

They’ve really explored the various permutations of the technology, too, with interesting twists, including overwriting a person more than once. You can’t cheat the system if it’s in the future and has access to everything you do and can reach back in time to keep you on the straight and narrow.

They only have two seasons so far, and they better make a third because I need to know what happens next!

Leonie (leonierogers) | 1213 comments I've also loved Travellers - great show with great characters and terrific twists!

I'm currently dabbling in Rivervale, which I think I like, but sometimes find a bit trite.

I was also totally put off by the first episode of Black Mirror - felt like my brain needed a good scrub out afterwards. Maybe I'll try some of the later episodes, as I believe they're all stand alone episodes.

We're also enjoying Longmire, which was sort of a surprise.

Trike Beste wrote: "If you like Marvelous Mrs. Maisel you might wanna try Glow. I LOVED IT! ."

I also liked Glow, but that was months ago.

Another really good show I just finished is Runaways on Hulu, based on the Marvel comic. The casting is spot on, as all the actors really look like their comic book counterparts (although they aged up the youngest because of child labor laws, but it still works). I was wondering how well they’d pull off Old Lace, and the answer is “perfectly. For those who haven’t read the comic, Old Lace is a genetically engineered velociraptor. They mostly use a puppet with some CGI now and again, but it’s amazing. It really looks like it’s breathing. It blinks, has lip-curls, drools, the whole deal. This scene is slightly spoilery but they’re so confident in their puppet it’s shot in full daylight:

Waiting on Star Wars: Rebels to resume its final season, which I suspect is going to end up in a very Rogue One way, since none of the characters show up in the movies. However... both the Ghost and Chopper can be seen in Rogue One, so maybe some of the non-droid characters survive.

Don't think I will ever again see a more adorable and perfect couple as Amy and Ty!

Plus ,so sad to be finished with "Stranger Things" on Netflix. Regular TV.......SUX!

I am now loving "Merlin"on Netflix. :D

Anna (vegfic) | 10422 comments I don't have Netflix, so I can't watch Star Trek Discovery or The Expanse. I want to hold out as long as possible, because I'm afraid I'll be glued to the TV and never read again.

I do have HBO (Nordic), but I'm not currently actively watching anything. I tend to binge watch. I'm mostly waiting for the second season of The Handmaid's Tale, the trailer looks promising. I was originally not too happy to hear about a second season, but I've changed my mind.

colleen the convivial curmudgeon (blackrose13) | 2709 comments Sarah wrote: "How is the new X Files Colleen? Is it worth checking out? I always loved the original but was worried a revival was going to ruin it."

I've been enjoying it, but it's not without its flaws.

Since the seasons are shortened, the first episodes of each season have been very expositiony, and the conspiracy stuff - the mythology of it - seems a bit haphazard. They sort of (view spoiler) the finale from last season, which was so weird.

But they've had some really good episodes. I've enjoyed the wacky/funny episodes especially, even though some other fans have hated those the most.

I can understand your concern...but being from the bible belt, I'm sad to say this is more the norm than not. At least, it was when I was growing up. If you are from that area, you get used to accepting the things that work and ignoring the things that don't. But church is a huge part of life there so you can't avoid it.

They consider damn near everything a sin. I was once told by a preacher that I was the anti-christ. Simply because I didn't agree with some obscure point he was making.

colleen the convivial curmudgeon (blackrose13) | 2709 comments MrsJoseph wrote: "They consider damn near everything a sin. I was once told by a preacher that I was the anti-christ. Simply because I didn't agree with some obscure point he was making."

Ha!

I don't live in the Bible Belt, but I was told in Catholic high school that I was being "lead astray by the devil" simply because I was questioning aspects of doctrine and, well, faith in general.

message 36: by Bobby (new)

Bobby | 869 comments I've been reading and playing video games a lot lately, so I haven't been watching much TV. Although I did just binge on the first 5 episodes of The Punisher last night. I've got tons of shows lined up to watch on Netflix that I haven't gotten around to. Pretty much anything super hero related is in there.

I usually get caught up in 2 different forms of entertainment out of Books, TV, and Video Games. Right now I'm into books and video games, but I'll get in a TV mood again eventually. I might have even started it with The Punisher last night, because I was really enjoying it, and I know I'll have to finish the season soon.

It's possible, I haven't checked. I'll get Netflix if I decide I really want to watch them. I'm happy having less to watch, because I have plenty to read!

colleen the convivial curmudgeon (blackrose13) | 2709 comments I'd actually like to add a few more comedies into my TV viewing, but I don't really do well with them.

I've started and bailed on Kimmy Schmidy, Grace and Frankie, and I can't stand BBT.

I liked Black Books, and IT Crowd and Parks & Rec, though.

YES! It was basically the same thing I was doing. Questioning: not to be done.

I almost got kicked out of the house at 12...because I was required to wear stockings w/a dress and didn't have any [colored white or black] stockings. My great grandmother came in my room and started shoving my stuff into random bags while I stood around crying. My grandma had to talk her off the ledge. Fun times.

Paul Perry (pezski) | 292 comments Not watching a great deal at the moment. Half way through season 3 of Fargo, just finished Jessica Jones and, of course, Stranger Things.

I'm in-and-out of The Punisher, not convinced - a lot of the dialogue seems to be daytime soap standard, which is bizarre given the pedigree of the writer.

I've just start the Netflix Dirk Gently, which looks pretty good, although not nearly so good as the short-live BBC version with Stephen Mangan a couple of years back.

On UK TV the Xmas special for League of Gentleman was brilliant, and the new series of Inside Number 9 is simply superlative.

Happy Valley and No Offence are excellent, and I can't wait for new series (fingers crossed!)

I have Peaky Blinders queued up as I've heard very good things.

Nice- I'll have to check it out at least. I am glad the original cast came back. It would be the same without Scully and Mulder.

colleen the convivial curmudgeon (blackrose13) | 2709 comments Yeah. I've heard Gillian Anderson is leaving after this year, so I'm not sure if they're planning on trying to continue or not.

I sort of hope not, considering it took a serious nose-dive last time when Duchovny left and they tried to keep it going.

It’s a fun show, nothing taxing, just light entertainment as a nice antidote to life.

colleen the convivial curmudgeon (blackrose13) | 2709 comments This week's episode was good, but I'm getting tired of the "there can only be one Librarian" plotline, especially since it feels like needless drama in an otherwise fun show, and it also feels like just an obvious way to get Noah Wiley off the show for awhile again.

Kim Kaso | 33 comments Good list, like most of those shows. I was away from tv for a year while in trauma rehab except for some shows I watched at 3 am on my tablet while the hospital wrestled my roommate back into bed...she was 98 with a broken hip, but dementia made her think she was home and I was a visitor on her front porch, she did not remember breaking her hip and kept trying to climb out of bed. So, an episode of something to keep me company while the overhead lights were on.

I am excited to see Altered Carbon is making it to Netflix February 2. I loved that series of books.
