Welcome Pink Team! This is your team's official strategy thread. This thread is all yours to use as you please.

If you need to reacquaint yourself with the rules for the Team Battleship Challenge, they're all posted over here.

Ultimately, your goal is to blast the five ships hidden on your board out of the water. There is one 5-Block ship, one 4-Block ship, two 3-Block ships, and one 2-Block ship hidden.

Sophie (sawphie) | 2826 comments Yay go Pink team! I'm away the whole weekend, but I'll check in when I'm back on Sunday. :)

message 3: by Michelle (new)

Michelle (mich2689) | 484 comments Yay!!! I can’t wait for the readathon to start!

message 4: by Joan (last edited Mar 23, 2018 06:28AM) (new)

Joan Barnett | 1972 comments I'm excited to start. I was planning on reading:

Six of Crows
The Immortalists
and maybe a short classic like The Strange Case of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde, or The War of the Worlds

I also have to finish Heir of Fire. I'm about halfway through (560 pages)

I also just finished an audio so I'm looking for my next one to listen to.

message 5: by Joan (new)

Joan Barnett | 1972 comments I just ordered three non-fiction audio books that were available at the library so I can probably pick them up tomorrow!!

message 6: by Jillian (last edited Mar 27, 2018 06:34AM) (new)

Jillian | 2834 comments I'm looking forward to this read-a-thon!

For the color of the rainbow task, I only have a book for the color green The Things You Can See Only When You Slow Down Guidance on the Path to Mindfulness from a Spiritual Leader by Haemin Sunim The Things You Can See Only When You Slow Down: Guidance on the Path to Mindfulness from a Spiritual Leader/Haemin Sunim. (I have been saving this book for the read-a-thon even though it feels a bit ironic to read it for this challenge).

All my other book covers are brown, white and black. My non-fiction covers are lacking in color.

I can help with both of these tasks also.
Read 4,000 pages (600 per Member)
Finish 3 Books Started Before the Read-a-Thon (1 per Member; <75% Complete)
Black Moon (Zodiac, #3) by Romina Russell Black Moon/Romina Russell 82 pages (started at 72% finished)

Listen to 20 Hours of Audiobooks (5 Hours per Member)

(note to myself still have 328 pages to read for group page count).

message 7: by Joan (new)

Joan Barnett | 1972 comments The Immortalists would probably qualify for a fall book cover. It can also fit in some other spots though and we'll have to figure out what we need. It was published in 2018 also.

I could read Annihilation instead of one of the small classics if that fits in better with what we need for a color title.

Otherwise my books are pretty much black, white and maybe blue for 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea - I could read that if it would help.

message 8: by Michelle (new)

Michelle (mich2689) | 484 comments I’m going to start by reading Magpie Murders so that’s a red book and also a mystery.

I can also contribute to the audiobook hours.

message 9: by Kelly (new)

Kelly Brown | 371 comments Hello everyone!! Happy to start another wonderful week reading with all of you!

I am currently reading Shattered Mirror, which I am only 36 % of the way through. Unfortunately it has a black cover. It can count for thriller/ mystery, female author, or book in a series.

I am hoping to help on all the overlapping prompts, (except audiobooks, sorry!😔), and get a book or two done.....plus sink some ships!!!!!

message 10: by Silvia (new)

Silvia Turcios | 1058 comments I have started with One of Us is Lying, which can count as as YA or for A Book from the 2017 GR Choice Awards ... or maybe for other categories. I wil let you know when I finish.

I will also be reading a graphic novel and a picture book. I will try other readings, but for sure, those I have mentioned.

message 11: by Silvia (new)

Silvia Turcios | 1058 comments Done with the Kick-off and also the topic Getting to Know You, which I am not sure if counts as a game, but I already did it :)

message 12: by Jillian (new)

Jillian | 2834 comments Did we want to try for the rainbow task? Green and red have books and there is a maybe for blue so far. I can probably take one of the other colors if needed.

I am going to finish The Three Musketeers by Alexandre Dumas The Three Musketeers do you think this would count for orange?

message 13: by Ira (new)

Ira | 354 comments I am reading Obsidio (The Illuminae Files, #3) by Amie Kaufman . I am already halfway through...

message 14: by Joan (new)

Joan Barnett | 1972 comments I had already started Heir of Fire before the read-a-thon started and I was halfway through. We can count that for one of the books started before. It has a green cover.

I can also read Annihilation (Southern Reach, #1) by Jeff VanderMeer - I think that counts as a yellow cover. Honestly my daughter and I can't decide if it is a really light yellow or beige......I could also read Illuminae (The Illuminae Files, #1) by Amie Kaufman - if needed. That would count for orange and I'm dying to read it! I can also read Requiem (Delirium, #3) by Lauren Oliver for red.

message 15: by Jillian (new)

Jillian | 2834 comments For my book recommendation, I read this book during the last read-a-thon and really enjoyed it, 44. A ghost story-
A Sudden Light by Garth Stein A Sudden Light/Garth Stein 2/4/18 ★★★★.

Joan, it can be really hard to figure out some book covers colors.

message 16: by Chinook (new)

Chinook | 639 comments Do we have a team captain this time?

message 17: by Chinook (new)

Chinook | 639 comments I’ve just finished Farmer Boy Farmer Boy (Little House, #3) by Laura Ingalls Wilder .

It was an audiobook and I started before the challenge. I listened to 5 hours during the challenge period. It has a female author and is part of a series. I reside in the same country. It has a child main character. It was published more than 10 years ago.

I’m not sure I quite understand how the lightning/non-lightning works.

For example, is the key that I mention every lightning it fills and one non-lightning? Or...?

message 18: by Katie (new)

Katie | 2360 comments I was just going to post the same thing as Chinook. Would someone like to volunteer to be team captain and do a spreadsheet to keep track of our tasks?

message 19: by Katie (new)

Katie | 2360 comments I'm currently reading Missoula by Jon Krakauer. I'm on the app so I can not link to it, but it's blue and can count for nonfiction.

message 20: by Katie (new)

Katie | 2360 comments I went back and looked at the cover of Missoula, and it actually has snow on the cover, so it's probably a better choice for the winter cover prompt than the nonfiction one.

message 21: by Jillian (new)

Jillian | 2834 comments I finished my first book that I had started before the challenge. I think it only counts towards these 2 tasks.

Read 4,000 pages (600 per Member) 600-82= 518

Samantha (sgiffin) | 146 comments Okay, based on the few people who've posted competed books so far, here are the guesses we can get:

** Much changed here**
Erin - Article in Title (A) [A Loving, Faithful Animal]
Myself/Samantha - Read a Horror [MEG Origins]
Chinook, Jillian, Samantha - Read 3 Books Started Prior to Readathon [Farmer Boy, Black Moon, MEG: A Novel of Deep Terror]

Folks, let us know what your board guesses are! I'm going to go with B 3

Also, just so we're clear - the tasks can only be completed once each, right? So we can cross the 2 Female Authors task off completely, right?

message 26: by Samantha (new)

Samantha (sgiffin) | 146 comments Also, yes, I completed my first book: Meg: A Novel of Deep Terror.

I'm counting it as reading a Horror novel, and for the tasks, it's a Finished Book, A finished book begun Pre-Readathon, and 3 hours of Audiobook,

message 27: by Samantha (new)

Samantha (sgiffin) | 146 comments And I may as well go ahead and recommend a book while I'm here and working:

If you're a fan of British Humor, Literary Allusions, and Wordplay, I recommend either Jasper Fforde (especially his Thursday Next series, starting with The Eyre Affair) or Douglas Adams (The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy series is fantastic).

message 28: by Samantha (new)

Samantha (sgiffin) | 146 comments Erin wrote: "Samantha, I'll guess E7"

Gotcha - I'll update our board.

message 29: by Samantha (new)

Samantha (sgiffin) | 146 comments Here's the Spreadsheet I've got going for our Group, so you can see our progress on the tasks:

I'll update as often as I can

message 30: by Ira (new)

Ira | 354 comments I finished Obsidio

message 31: by Michelle (new)

Michelle (mich2689) | 484 comments I’ll most likely finish Magpie Murders by the end of Sunday. This can count as a mystery with a red cover.

message 32: by Jillian (new)

Jillian | 2834 comments I don’t think my book can count for the fantasy spot since I read less than 75% during the read a thon. Though, I am some what unsure about this rule since two of my audio books are really long 10 hours on each but they are both at 50% and 40%. It seems unfair to long books but makes sense for shorter ones.

message 33: by Katie (new)

Katie | 2360 comments B3 - HIT!

E7 - MISS

message 34: by Samantha (new)

Samantha (sgiffin) | 146 comments Jillian wrote: "I don’t think my book can count for the fantasy spot since I read less than 75% during the read a thon. Though, I am some what unsure about this rule since two of my audio books are really long 10 ..."

I see where that could be the case, but the rules don't specifically state anything about amount read, except that, as I understand it, the book has to be less than 75% completed to count for that task. And since that's an overlapping task, it would make sense, in my mind, for it to count towards a regular task as well.

I'm going to ask in the main challenge page to get an answer from the Mods, and we'll go from there.

message 35: by Samantha (new)

Samantha (sgiffin) | 146 comments Ira - you earned a guess for [Obsidio], I listed it as a "London UFO"/SciFi read.

Could you also tell me how many pages you read so I can add it to my running total?

message 36: by Jillian (new)

Jillian | 2834 comments I was read Laura was posting that in her group.

message 37: by Jillian (new)

Jillian | 2834 comments Getting clarification sounds good.

message 38: by Samantha (last edited Mar 24, 2018 07:22PM) (new)

Samantha (sgiffin) | 146 comments Jillian, you were right.

I made the changes in the Spreadsheet and the post above. Thanks for pointing that out.

We have still completed the Books Started Prior to Readathon task though, so you or Chinook can make the guess for that one.

message 39: by Chinook (new)

Chinook | 639 comments May I suggest B4?

message 40: by Chinook (new)

Chinook | 639 comments For book recommendations, I’ll recommend The Library at Mount Char. I went into it with zero idea what it was about because it was a book club pick and I really enjoyed it.

message 41: by Joan (new)

Joan Barnett | 1972 comments A book suggestion from me would be The Hate U Give if you haven't read it already.

message 42: by Kelly (new)

Kelly Brown | 371 comments Ok since the rules were clarified, and we have finished the category, if I continue to read the book I started before the read a thon, it won't count for too many categories then? If this is the case, since I am a slow reader, I may start something new to make it count for more.

message 43: by Kelly (new)

Kelly Brown | 371 comments I recommend Pandemic by A. G. Riddle.

message 44: by Jillian (last edited Mar 24, 2018 09:43PM) (new)

Jillian | 2834 comments I listened to the short story Click-Clack the Rattlebag by Neil Gaiman which can count towards the for 3 short stories. (I am unsure if this one is three members read 3 short stories or if one member needs to read all three. I can read two more if I need too).

message 45: by Sophie (new)

Sophie (sawphie) | 2826 comments Hi guys, I'm back from my weekend! I'm excited to read now! 😃

I recommend Everyone's a Aliebn When Ur a Aliebn Too. Such a cute graphic novel, I highly recommend it, especially of you don't read them often.

message 46: by Sophie (new)

Sophie (sawphie) | 2826 comments I just read Tokyo Ghoul, Vol. 11 that can count for:
- 2 Graphic Novels or Manga (1 per Member)
- Read a Book in a Series
- Read a Book Published Outside the Major 5 Publishers
- Read a Fantasy Book

I know where the ships are, so feel free to make a guess for me ;)

message 47: by Katie (new)

Katie | 2360 comments B4 - HIT!

message 48: by Michelle (new)

Michelle (mich2689) | 484 comments I was just on a flight and I read Magpie Murders for over two hours straight.

message 49: by Silvia (new)

Silvia Turcios | 1058 comments I finished with Fragments of Horror. This can count for graphic novel or for Genre Horror.

Who decides in which category is better to include the book?
Who should update the spreadsheet? Ourselves or the captain?
Who says when we have the right for a guess? ... I think I have one now :)

message 50: by Jillian (new)

Jillian | 2834 comments Silvia, I think your graphic novel can be combined with Sophie's graphic novel for the task 2 Graphic Novels or Manga (1 per Member) which would be an extra guess. I don't think it matters what category a book is placed in since most can be repeated multiple times more just for organization.

I think if you complete a task you should get to guess and then we share guessing for the mod's and lightning ones.
