Starting out I love Dara’s passion and determination! It’s great to have a female lead who’s goal has nothing to do with boys, school or a social life.
I can’t decide how exactly I feel about Dara's reaction to her Mum coming out as transgender
On the one hand Dara does sound a little selfish. I have no experience, but transition doesn’t sound easy for anyone, let alone some without a support system. The grandparents thing I get - none of them agreed with dara’s Mum’s life and so I kind of understand why she would cut them out. But I guess my conflict comes from the fact that she didn't need to keep this from Dara. Yes she was scared she would lose her but in all honesty, if she really thought about it and didn’t make a big deal about being trans, then Dara probably never really would have cared.
She could have kept her distance from relatives if she’d told Dara they didn’t agree with the fact she was trans?
I think that the lies are what is upsetting and annoying Dara, they are making her mad. And the whole tennis situation. If I’m honest, I feel like I would react in a similar way. The trans story wouldn’t bother me, but the lies would. If my own mother didn’t support my passion and instead shut it down, criticized me for it and showed no interest in it because it made her envy me, then yes that would annoy the hell out of me.
I’m feeling a possible romance brewing between Dara and Sam? And I’m a sucker for love so YAY! But if that doesn’t happen, I don’t think it will affect my enjoyment of the book. I think It’ll only be a minor addition.
Chapter 5 I feel does an EXCELLENT job in explaining basically what I’ve just said and why Dara is mad and upset. Maybe she’s being a LITTLE harsh on her Mum but I’m hoping Dara will chill out soon. Otherwise she might become the selfish one
Overall I thought it was a good opening and I’m excited to read on.
